Unit Advice “Airstream Mechanisms”

This unit discusses the ways of producing an airstream.

We need this background knowledge about the total
range of the phonetic capabilities of humans in order to
describe the languages of the world phonetically.

In the content sections, which contain a central e-lecture

and several micro-teaching videos, you will be introduced
to some general aspects of respiration as well as to the
principles underlying human airstream mechanisms used
in speech.

As usual, as a starting point, we recommend to use the

question set with its hyperlinks in the “How to proceed”
section as default guidance. And, don’t forget: once an
activity is ready, tick it off to document your progress.

The mastery test presents ten simple choice questions, after content mastery you
should be able to answer these questions with ease.

Finally, the suggestions for the in-class activities are all about speech sound articula-
tion using different airstreams. Not easy for beginners, but if you follow the instructions,
you should manage.

So all in all, a real practical unit – but if you invest a reasonable amount of time – you
will manage.

Suggested workload: 90 to 120 minutes.
