Procedure text is a text that contains how to make something through

a certain series of steps.
Without realizing it, we actually encounter many Procedure texts in our
daily lives. For example, maybe we have seen the cooking instructions
found on the back of the instant noodle packaging which explain how
to cook instant noodles correctly, that is one of the simplest examples
of Procedure text.

More complete, we can usually find procedure text in several food

recipe books, we can find out how to make a dish starting from the
ingredients needed, the tools used, the steps that must be taken until
the food is successfully made and served.

In addition, examples of text that can be categorized as Procedure text

are Manuals or Users' Guides.

The manual itself is a text that contains how to use or operate a tool.

We find many manuals on various types of electronic devices or other

tools that we just bought, because usually manuals are included with
the tools we buy as a guide for using or operating these tools.

b. Generic Structure

Procedure text generally has several structural parts such as:

1. Goal

This section usually contains a title about how to make or do something.

Usually the title of Procedure text begins with the word "How to".
example:
How to Make Garlic French Fries
How to Adjust Date and Time on Windows 10

2. Material

In the material section we can write down some of the materials needed to make
something, or we can also write down the tools used.

But not all types of text procedure include material.

In the manual text, there is no material needed or used because the manual text
only describes how to run or operate something.

3. Steps / Methods

This section contains the methods or steps taken to create or complete something.
c. Social Function of Manual as A type of Procedure Text

The purpose of procedure texts is to provide a series of precise, sequenced

steps or directions that explain to the readers how to do something while
also allowing the readers to reach the outcome successfully. Procedure
texts can take several forms, including, but not limited to, recipes,
instructions for how to do, use, or make something, science experiments,
directions for a map, manuals, etc. It is also important to note that the
procedure texts can take different forms such as brochures or guide books.
Procedure text should be supported by authentic presentation features
such as numbered steps though they can also be written in structured
paragraphs.

The followings are the social function of procedure text:

 It is used to describe how something is done in sequenced steps.
 It provides a series of steps in sequence that explain the readers
how to do something while allowing them to reach the outcome
successfully.
 The communicative purpose of the text is to tell the steps of
making or doing something.

d. Language Feature

As stated by Nurdiono (2016), there are several language features that are commonly
used in constructing a procedure text. The description of each feature is depicted
below.

1. Generally using simple present tense.

In the simple present, most regular verbs use the root form, except in the
third-person singular (which ends in -s). The simple present is a verb tense
with two main uses. We use the simple present tense when an action is
happening right now, or when it happens regularly (or unceasingly, which is
why it’s sometimes called present indefinite). Depending on the person, the
simple present tense is formed by using the root form or by adding -s or -es to
the end.

I feel great! Pauline loves pie. I’m sorry to hear that you’re sick.

2. Using adverbial of sequence or using temporal adjective.

We use the sequence adverbs to describe the order in which two or more
actions happen. For example first, second, the last, etc.)

3. Using imperative sentences or command.

Imperative sentences are used to issue a command or instruction, make a
request, or offer advice. Basically, they tell people what to do. Below, you'll
find some imperative sentence examples and learn about their function.
Imperative sentences usually end with a period but can occasionally end with
an exclamation point. These sentences are sometimes referred to as directives
because they provide direction to whoever is being addressed. In the
examples of imperative sentences here, you'll note that each line is issuing a
command of some sort:
 Pass the salt.
 Move out of my way!
 Shut the front door.
 Find my leather jacket.
 Be there at five.
4. Using action verbs.
An action verb is a verb that expresses physical or mental action. The action
verb tells us what the subject of our clause or sentence is doing-physically or
mentally.
For example turn, put, cut, etc.

5. Using conjunctions to link a process to another process.

Some of the conjunctions that show a sequence of process here are such as
then, after that, etc.

6. Using adverb of time to express details of time.

The adverb of time in this part means the duration or the length. It can be
stated in second, minute, or hour. For example for five minutes, in two hours,
etc
