In Chapter 1 of the text, we discuss goal setting.

Select a business-related or professional goal

you want to achieve. Address each part of the SMART technique — Specific, Measurable,

Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound–providing relevant details about the goal for each

component of the goal-setting process. Be sure that your Learning Journal entry is a minimum of

500 words.

We all have different goals and desires that we would want to achieve in life. Goals, whether

personal or professional, set the path for where we are and where we would want to be in life.

Having many goals without a plan is setting up yourself for failure as a goal without a plan is just

a dream. I would previously find myself with many goals both long term and short term but I

could not understand why I couldn’t actualize them even after putting in enough work to see

them to fruition.

After reading Principles Of management, I noticed I was setting myself up for failure as most of

the goals in my life were not “SMART”. The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable,

Aggressive, Realistic & Timely as quoted in Management Principles v.1.1 (Bauer, Carpenter,

&Erdogan, 2012, p57).

The smart technique encourages us to define our goals clearer and helps us to reach our

objectives in a realistic approach. It gives you clarity of where are you heading with your goals

and what needs to be done at any level of the plan to actualize it.

Below is an example of one of my current goals using the Smart Technique.

Specific:

I plan to graduate with a business administration degree in the next 4 years.

Where - I’m currently enrolled as a student at the University of the People pursuing an

associate degree in business administration which I want to pursue to degree level.

When- I plan to complete the course within the next four years.

Why - I want to increase my knowledge which will help me in running my business and

also make me competitive towards employers.

What - I want to accomplish my business degree by the end of 2025.

Measurable.
I will ensure I complete my course units successfully and bypassing my exams with a

minimum target of 3.0 GPA at the end of every term.

Aggressive.

I’m planning to achieve this by creating enough time to study, which is a minimum of 15

hours every week. This will ensure I can complete my assignments on time, hence

ensuring I have good grades.

Realistic.

I’m actualizing this by already being enrolled in this associate degree course as this will

set the foundation for my degree.

I have created time to focus on my degree to ensure I complete any course assignments

on time.

Timely.

I have a target to complete a minimum of two courses per term for my associate degree

but I will push it further to 3 so that I can complete my business administration degree

hopefully by the end of 2025.

We all have different goals and desires that we would like to achieve in life. Terms, or

personal or professional, set the stage for where we are and where we would like to be in life.

To have too many goals out of the plan is to set yourself up for failure as a goal without a plan is right

dream. I would find myself with a lot of long-term and short-term goals but me

I did not understand why I could not do it even after I had put in enough work to see myself

in order to achieve them.

After studying the Principles of Management, I realized that I was setting myself up for failure like most
of them
goals in my life were not "SMART". The word SMART stands for Specific, Measurable,

Aggressive, Realistic & Timely as quoted in Management Principles v.1.1 (Bauer, Carpenter,

& Erdogan, 2012, p57).

The wise approach encourages us to explain our goals clearly and helps us to achieve our own

objectives in a practical way. It gives you a clear idea of where you are headed and your goals

and what needs to be done at any stage of the program to achieve it.

Below is an example of one of my current goals using Smart Technique.

It is Specific:

• I plan to graduate with a degree in business administration for the next 4 years.

• Where - I am currently enrolled as a student at the University of the People pursuing a degree

associate degree in business management that I want to pursue at the graduate level.

• I plan to graduate in the next four years.

• Why - I want to expand my knowledge that will help me run my business again

and it makes me compete with employers.

• What - I want to achieve my business degree by the end of 2025.

It is measurable.

• I will ensure that I complete my study units successfully and pass my exams by

a minimum of 3.0 GPA at the end of each term.

It is aggressive.

• I plan to achieve this by creating enough reading time, at least 15

hours every week. This will ensure that I can complete my tasks on time, therefore

to make sure I have good marks.

It is realistic.

• I do this by simply enrolling in this associate degree course as this will

lay the foundation for my qualifications.

• I have set aside time to focus on my studies to ensure that I complete any academic activities
on time.

It is timely.

• I aim to complete at least two courses per term with my associate qualifications

but I will go on to 3 so that I can complete my degree in business administration

hopefully by the end of 2025.
