Learning Activity 1 Thermodynamics Directions: Explain/ Discuss what is being asked. Cite your sources properly. Use the rubric as your guide in answering. 1. How do solids and liquids expand? Expansion, commonly known as thermal expansion, is the process through which the dimensions of an object increase or decrease as a result of a temperature change. Expansion occurs when materials are heated. However, the volume that the atoms take up expands, not the atoms themselves. When solids are heated, their particles move more quickly and press against each other, causing them to expand slightly. The similar thing happens in liquids, but they expand more than solids when heated. This is because, unlike solids, atoms or particles in liquids are usually less tightly packed, allowing for more free movement and thus more expansion. 2. Explain the heat and temperature processes being observed when going to beaches/ river. When we visit beaches or rivers, we notice that the water and sand temperatures differ. We can feel the sand being warm as we walk because of its low heat capacity. Because of its high heat capacity, water feels cool despite the energy produced by the sun. Water requires more energy to heat up. 3. How do the principle of expansion to railroads, road and bridge construction and in thermostats is applied? Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature. This principle of expansion to railroad, roads and bridges construction can be seen at how engineers created material known as “expansion joint” that is intended in keeping the structure as temperature changes. Expansion joints are used to fill the gaps when there are cracks created in the sidewalk and allows railroads and bridges for example, to freely expand and contract with temperature changes.. For the thermostats, which are used to maintain a desired temperature in a system like refrigerator and air-conditioner, works on the principle of thermal expansion of solid materials. Thermostats prevent overheating and produce a good working environment.
