3. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.

According to customer requirements, this study is based on “NSF/ANSI 61-2013: Drinking

Water System Components – Health Effects” Regulation
When the migration water was obtained, the water sample was analyzed, indicated in the Annex
I, in order to calculate the migration rate.
According with this Regulation and with CEN/CENELEC regulations, all the European
countries are required to reach the specifications indicated.

Table 1. General information about the migration test:

Parameter Data
Total number of sheets 14 pieces
Final water volume 2L
Disinfection process Not appropriate for this test
Chlorinated water containing chlorine (Cl2)
Water assay characteristics
1ppm
Water assay and temperature Chlorinated water at 23±1ºC for 72±1h
Test deviations No deviations.
Incidences No incidences
Star data: 26/09/2014
Final data: 13/10/2014

Reagents used:
- Tap water from the laboratory.
- Assay water, chlorated water with a total chlorine content of 1ppm (Cl2).
- Chronometer ID Plan 1873, ID Calibration 25126. (Laboratory code G-154)
- Bath of water ID Calibración 42667. Laboratory code (B-131)

Migration steps:
- Sampling, shipment and preservation. The sample was provided by the company
PINTURAS VILLADA SKC. No special preservation condition was required.
- Sample preparation. The client covered the glass sheets. According with NSF/ANSI 61-
2013: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects Regulation only the surface
in contact with the water must be into consideration for the migration. Two sheet faces
were covered with the product.
- Static contact period. Following this Regulation the sheets were complete immersed in
one (1) liter of Chlorinated water during 14 days. Each day the test water was replaced.
- Migration assay. The sheets were immersed in 2L of Chlorinated water at 1ppm at
23±1ºC for 72±1h. At the same time, a blank without samples pieces, have been also
carried out in the same conditions than the samples.
- Analysis. The final concentration of the organic compounds was determined by means
of the analytical methods indicated in the Annex I.

The migration rate (M) was calculated with the next equation:

M = cn / (S / V · t) [mg dm-2d-1]
where:
M = Migration rate
cn = The concentration obtained (expressed as mg/L and calculated with (cn = an – bn ) where an
is the concentration obtained in the migration and bn the concentration obtained in the blank).
t = Migration period (10 days)
S/V = rate surface / volume in dm-1 (1.2dm-1)

5. CONCLUSIONS.

- The final liquid obtained in the migration process in the test water has been analyzed in
order to determine some compounds included in NSF/ANSI 61-2013 Regulation and
indicated in table 2.1 and calculated the migration rate.
- Different organic compounds such as Ethylbenzene, m+p–Xylene and o–Xylene were
detected in the sample coded as 2340963. These compounds are included in D1 and D4
tables in NSF/ANSI 61-2013 Regulation. In the case of Ethylbenzene, it does not
exceed the value set by that Regulation, which sets a maximum value of 0.7mg/L. in
the case of Xylenes, does not exceed the value set by that Regulation, which sets a
maximum value of 10mg/L
- In the Analysis of Organic Compounds (ANEX II), Diethyl Phthalate, Ethylbenzene and
Xylenes, were detected. These compounds are included in D1, D3 and D4 tables in
NSF/ANSI 61-2013. In the case of Diethyl Phthalate does not exceed the value set by
that Regulation, which sets a maximum value of 6mg/L. the value obtained was
0.009mg/L. Other compounds were detected in that analysis, but are not included in
NSF/ANSI 61-2013 tables and no toxicity was found for these substances.
- The product coded as 2340963 (PROTECFULL SFP 108) meets all the criteria set out
in NSF/ANSI 61-2013 Regulation.
