MAKING REQUESTS

Thanks for attending class today on Making requests. I really liked it when
Amy Lee
worked well on the different tasks together with the classmates.
Amy Lee
also did a great job using the target language that we learned in making requests.
Politeness is very important and today we learned to politely make requests by
using the following phrases:
Could you possibly...

Would you mind if...

I was wondering if...

Could you please...

Would it be okay...

I wonder if you could help me...

Could you tell me.. please.

And when we need to turn down a request we simply say,

I'm afraid I can't...
Keep practicing what you've learned and I wish you all the best.

making a hotel reservation

Thanks for attending class today on Making a hotel reservation. I really liked it
when
Alejandro Prado
actively participated in class today.
Alejandro Prado
also did a great job working on the different tasks and using the target language
in making a hotel reservation.
We learned to use the right preposition when talking about dates and months.
When we are specific on the day or date, we use the preposition, "ON". When there
is no definite date or time, we say, "IN".
ex. On November 3, 2019
On November 3.
In November 2019
In November

We also learned some vocabulary that we use in making a hotel reservation:

single room
double room
credit card
non-smoking room
cash
for three nights

And a few expressions to use in a conversation:

I’d like to make a reservation, please.

For how many people?

When would you like to check in?

Smoking or non-smoking?

The rate is _________.

I need a credit card number please.

Thank you very much.

Keep using these phrases and practice on what you have learned today.

Maricelle V.
eosworld.mitchel@gmail.com

Final task

Students make a hotel reservation.

Vocabulary
Revision of how to say months/dates; room types

Grammar / Function

How can I help you?

I’d like to make a reservation, please.

How many people?

When would you like to check in?

Smoking or non-smoking?

The rate is _________.

I need a credit card number.

Thank you very much.

Feedback focus

Grammar / Function

Students may be encountering

would like + infinitive
to make a polite request for the first time. It may help to show how
would
is contracted to
'd
after subject pronouns such as
I, he
and
they
, e.g.
I’d like to make a reservation, please.
The lesson makes use of both verbs and nouns as follow ons:
Would you like a double room? Would you like to reserve the room now?
which may lead to interesting, yet incorrect grammatical combinations.

Word choice

Point out to students there is more than one way to make a reservation, e.g.
I'd like to make a reservation / I'd like to reserve a room / I’d like to book a
room / I’d like to make a booking,
etc.

Make students aware that a hotel clerk can answer the phone or start the
conversation in a variety of ways, e.g.
… Hotel. Can I help you? / May I help you? / How can I help you?
etc.

Students may need to know that there is more than one way to end the conversation,
too, e.g.
Can I help you with anything else? / Is there anything else I can help you with?

Pronunciation
Saying the dates can pose a problem, e.g. /ˈfərst/, /ˈse-kənd/, /ˈthərd/, /fȯrth/.

For Spanish speakers, the /w/ in

would
can often be mixed together with a /g/ sound.

Lesson timings

All suggested lesson timings are approximate and depend on how many students you
have and the speed at which they get through things. Slower groups may have trouble
reaching the task, while faster ones may reach the end ahead of time.

The range of times on the tasks is wider, as the amount of feedback needed will
vary greatly from group to group.

Title page / Greeting students: 2-3 min

Warmer: 2-4 min

Vocab 1: 3-5 min

Vocab 2: 4-6 min

Intro task: 6-8 min

Dialog: 4-6 min

Practice: 6-8 min

Final task: 6-10 min

Summary / Follow on question / activity: 2-4 min

giving a report

Thanks for attending class today on Giving a report. I really liked it when
Keiko Ishikawa
participated very well during class.
Keiko Ishikawa also did a great job using the target language in giving a report.

In this lesson, we learned to compare 2 different ways to write a report. One of

which is to write using formal words and by using passive voice. This way we turn
away from using the personal pronoun "I".
It will help to also use the thesaurus to find more formal words to use when
writing a formal document.

Keep practicing and I hope you learn a lot from this lesson.

Maricelle V.
eosworld.mitchel@gmail.com

Lesson aim

giving a report.
