History
The game of badminton originated in Siam,
China over 2,000 years ago. It was brought to England in
1870 and was played somewhat like tennis. After being
played in Canada, badminton arrived in America and has
been popular since 1929. Since 1992, badminton has been
an Olympic sport, with bird speeds reaching 100 m.p.h. The
roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China,
and India, and it is closely related to the old children’s
game battledore and shuttlecock. Badminton is derived
directly from poona, which was played by British army
officers stationed in India in the 1860s.
Badminton was a sport played in ancient Greece and
Egypt, and it was traced in the beginning of mid-18th
century of British India. Shuttlecock stuck before was
referred as balls of wool. Badminton World Federation
was established in 1934, before it was known as
International Badminton Federation.
Surprisingly, badminton has a long history with its recent introduction onto the
Olympic Scene. Its origin date back at least 2,000 years to the game of battledore and
shuttlecock played in ancient China, India and Greece. Badminton House in
Gloucestershire is a place where badminton took his name. It was the home of the Duke
Beaufort where in badminton was played as a sport. And up to now, Gloucestershire is
now the base for IBF (International Badminton Federation).
