Arnis is the official national sport and the martial art of the

Philippines. It is also known as "Kali" or "Eskrima" and is a form of

martial arts that focuses on weapon-based fighting with knives, sticks,

bladed weapons, and some improvised weapons. Arnis word is

commonly used in Luzon meaning “weapon” or “sandata”, Eskrima

commonly used by the Visayan region meaning “Fencing”, while Kali is

commonly used by Mindanao region meanin KA – means “ Kamot”, LI

means “Lihok”. Either of the three terms can be use to a category of

Filipino martial arts.

The sport also includes hand to hand combat, grappling, joint locks

and weapon disarming techniques. Practitioners of the sport are called

arnisador (male athletes) and arnisadora (female athletes). Arnis is

a combat sport to defend oneself from attacks using hand to hand

combat, grappling, weapon disarming in weapon-based fights.

Initially, the sport was practiced by the peasant or commoner class,

but those practitioners lacked the scholarly knowledge to create any kind

of written record. Arnis was declared as a Philippines’ National

sport and martial art on 11 December 2009 by President Gloria

Macapagal-Arroyo. The first national organization for Arnis is the

National Arnis Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) which was

founded in 1975 by Gen. Fabian C. Ver.

3
However, its existence faded post the Philippine Revolution in 1986.

The two major types of Arnis practiced as sports are the system followed

by WEKAF (World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation) which was established

in 1989 and is recognized internationally; and the system followed by

Arnis Philippines (ARPI), established in 1986 which was used

prominently during the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. internationally,

Unit Intended Outcome:

At the end of the module, the student will be able to:

1. Learn the importance of warm-up, and cool down exercise.

2. Demonstrate warm-up exercises and stretching prior to any
vigorous physical activity;
Introduction:

There three main process of exercising, first, the warm-up, second,

the core training and the last is cooling down. Most of this module is all
about performing physically, it is critical that you don’t skip any of this
process. Most people skip the first and the last process because they
hate warm up and cool down and to save time, after all the main part of
the work out that counts, right?

Unfortunately, it’s not just the main part that matters, and the people
who skip the process before and after work out may be doing harm than
good in their body.

Why Warming Up and Cooling Down Is So Important

A warm-up and a cool-down both involve doing exercises at a

lower intensity and slower pace, which improves your athletic
performance, prevents injuries, and helps with recovery from
exercise.

Warm up activities include light jogging, jumping jack. Warming up

before exercise prepares your cardiovascular system for physical
activity, by increasing the blood flow to your muscles, and raising the
temperature of your body. It also helps to lower the risk of getting
injured — when your muscles are adequately warmed up, the
movements, stretches, and strain you put on them during your workout is
less severe. This also minimizes muscle soreness.

Cooling down after your workout aims to gradually bring your heart
rate and blood pressure to its normal level — the level it was at prior to
5
exercising. During your workout, your heart rate has been pumping
much higher than it does normally, and it’s important to ease it back
down instead of abruptly stopping all motion. Cooling down also helps
to regulate your blood flow, which is especially important for people
who undertake endurance sports such as long distance running. To
safely cool down, gradually reduce the pace of your exercise during the
last 10 minutes of your session — for example, if you’re jogging, reduce
your pace to a brisk walk for the last 10 minutes.

a. Brisk walk, Simple/light jogging and jumping jack at least 5 minutes

Sinawali is the double-cane method of fighting of arnis, escrima

and kali (Fig. 1). The name sinawali came from the Tagalog word
“sawali,” (fig. 1)a woven split bamboo mats used as walls of nipa huts.
The crisscrossing movements of sinawali weapons fighting mimic the
pattern of these mats hence the name.
