5 A boat man rows to a place 48 miles distant and back in 14 hours, but find that he can row 4 miles
with the stream in the same as 3 miles against the stream. Find the rate of the stream.

SOLUTION:
visibility
report_problem SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME

TIME = DISTANCE/SPEED

Let:

x = speed of boat

y = speed of stream

..he can row 4 miles with the stream in the same as 3 miles against the stream.

(with this statement, it is implied that the two distance was compared at the same duration of
travel)
Equating the time for downstream and upstream from the statement above:

 (eq. 1)

A boat man rows to a place 48 miles distant and back in 14 hours,..

(the man travels 48 miles and went back, meaning the distance going back is also 48 miles)

   (eq. 2)

Solving Simultaneously:

A 7 mph

B 2 mph

C 1 mph

D None of the Above
