Writing Task 5: Describing information in a table (Unit 5.5)

The following table contains rankings of the world’s busiest airports by international passenger
traffic. Write a short description summarising the information in the table. Try to use some
expressions of comparison and contrast. Can you give any explanations for the figures and the
trends in the number of passengers?

Write 120-150 words.

The above table contains a ranking of the world’s most transited International Airports
between the years 2018 and the first quarter of 2020. From 2018 to 2019 it can be
seen that the top 10 doesn’t vary as all of the airports stood in the same position in
those years. Other data that can be extracted from the table is the change of
passengers between the years 2018 and 2019, most of the airports see a moderate
growth in the traffic of passengers, particularly Doha airport, while Dubai and Hong
Kong see only a slightly decrease.
In the columns to the right of the table it is depicted the passenger traffic in the first
quarter of 2020 and the change between the first quarter of 2019 and 2020. As it is
well known by everyone, a pandemic situation affected our planet since the first
quarter of 2020 when there was an outbreak of a newly discovered virus called COVID-
19, which affected air traffic worldwide within weeks and paralysed the world. This can
be seen in the data of the last column where all the top 20 airports are affected by
COVID-19 as the change of passenger traffic decreases dramatically in comparison with
2019 air traffic.
