Origin of esp
A. The demands of a brave new wordl.

After the end of world war 2 at that time 1945 marked an era of enormous and unprecedented
expansion in scientific, technical and economic activities on an international scale . This expansion
created a unified world dominated by two forces technoligy and commerce which in their relentless
development immediately resulted in the demand for international languages. For the economic power
of telhe postwar world this role fell to britain

B. Revolution of linguistic

while at the same time as the demand for specialized English courses is growing, influential new ideas
are beginning to emerge in language studies. So traditionally the purpose of linguistics itself is to
describe the rules of using English, namely grammar. however, recent studies have shifted attention
from defining the formal features of language use to discovering the ways in which language is actually
used in real communication (Widdowson, 1978).

C. Focus on the learner

Learners were seen to have different needs and interest which would have an important influent on
their motivation to learn and therefore on the effectiveness of their learn. The clean relevance of the
English course to their needs would improve the learners’ motivation and thereby make learning better
and faster .Session

The developments of Esp

From its early beginning in the 1960 Esp has undergound three main phases of development.

Esp is not a monolothic universal phenomenon. Esp has developed at different speed in differemt
countries.

1.The concept of special Language :register analys

This stage took place mainly in the 1960s and early 1970s and was associated in particular with the work
of Petter Strevens(Halliday,MacIntosh,Strevens,1964),Jack Ewer(Ewer and Lattore,1969) and John
Swales (1971).

2.The leading lights in this movement were Henry Widdowson in Britain and so-called Washington
school of Larry Selinker, Louis Trimble, John Lackstrom and Marry Todd Trimble in United States.
3. Concept need analysis

To analyze the need, or accuracy, and suitability in a field.so why is need analysis important, because it
is to answer the questions of needs that they have needed, for the students themselves.
Needs analysis can be carried out through questionnaires, interviews, observations, tests, authentic data
collection, and case studies.
