Virtual Laboratory 1: Newton’s Second Law

of Motion
Questions:

1. According to Newton’s second law of motion, a net force on an object will cause it to accelerate.
How does the Newton’s law relate to the force of gravity?
2. How does the force of gravity affect the rate of acceleration?
3. Describe what happens when identical objects are dropped under different gravitational
conditions?
4. Describe what happens when objects of different mass are dropped under same gravitational
conditions.
5. What is weight? What is mass? How are mass and weight different?
6. Based on your experience with the experiments, how does mass affect weight?
7. What other conclusions can you draw from the data you collected in your table?

Answers:

1. If we will remove the air drag from the equation, objects will go faster if the planet has greater
force of gravity.
2. The rate of acceleration of an object will change depending on the force of gravity. The higher
the force of gravity of an object, the faster the rate of acceleration it will have.
3. The object that is dropped on a planet with higher gravitational conditions will fall faster than
the object dropped on a planet with lower gravitational condition.
4. If we will remove the air drag, both objects would fall at the same time.
5. Weight is the mass of the object multiplied by the force of gravitation while mass is about how
much matter is present in an object. Mass measures the object’s inertial property. On the other
hand, weight measures the force exerted on the mass of the object by gravity.
6. If the gravitational conditions are the same for both objects, the mass would be directly
proportional to the weight.
7. Jupiter have the greatest gravitational conditions among all planets while on the other hand,
Pluto, the farthest planet, have the Lowest gravitational conditions.
