INTRODUCTION

The New Telegraph is one of the Nigerian newspaper with a motto ‘Sanctity for truth’, that
is widely read by Nigerians and others globally.

It is written in a painstaking and concise diction to the tone and easy assimilation by all,
irrespective of academic attainment.

The Editor of the newspaper is Emeka Madunagu.

The paper has on its front page, the headlines boldly captured and pages identified for
easy location, and pictures (though mostly black and white background), depicting the
written headlines in a pictorial form.

Asset Declaration: You’ve case to answer, Supreme Court Tells Saraki

In the statement, the attempt by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to stop his trial
before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over alleged false declaration of asset hit the
wall as the full panel of Supreme Court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice
Mahmud Mohammed dismissed his appeal in its entirety. When Saraki was arraigned, he
had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Though he had approached the Court of Appeal to stop the trial but the Apeal Court
refused to halt it, a decision, which prompted the Senate President to approach the apex
court.

According to the paper, delivering the judgment in the appeal, Justice Walter Onnoghen,
who read the lead judgment, held that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) can legally
issue a bench warrant.

It was on that ground that the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Saraki and upheld
the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on October 30, 2015.

The Court dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit. The court also held that the CCT was
properly constituted to exercise jurisdiction over Saraki’s trial.

Buhari hands over to Osinbajo

President Muhammadu Buhari has officially handed over the leadership of the country to
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The decision was to allow the President begin a five-day vacation which took place on
Friday. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi
Adesina, President Buhari has already written to the leadership of the Senate on the
development. The statement said: ‘While President Buhari is on vacation, the Vice
President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo will perform the functions of the President’.

‘In compliance with Section 145(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, President Buhari has
dispatched a formal notice of his vacation to the Senate President and the Speaker of the
House of Representatives’.

An online news media earlier revealed that during his visit to the United Kingdom,
President Buhari will undertake a visit to medical doctors in a London hospital. The report
by the online media said that the President agreed to participate in a Syrian solidarity
meeting because it provides a perfect cover for the medical visit.

According to the report, there has been a debate within the presidency about the medical
visit, some of his handlers arguing that the Syrian meeting proveded a perfect alibi as the
President should not be seen to be sick less than one year after taking power.

Police arrest Perm Sec over sale of newborn baby for N200,000

A serving permanent secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service was said to be arrested
by a special team of Anti-Vice Squad of the state police command over alleged attempt to
buy a newborn baby for N200,000.

The permanent secretary who is also a practicing medical doctor and owner of a private
hospital located at Ighogene community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state,
was arrested, following a complaint from the mother of the baby.
4

Saturday Telegraph gathered that the 24-year old mother of the baby, Nnenna Lawrence,
had gone to the hospital at eight months into her pregnancy and attempted to secure the
service of the doctor for abortion.

It was gathered that though the permanent secretary declined due to the risk, she was,
however, allegedly to have offered to buy the baby if delivered with an offer of N200,000
for a female baby and the sum of N250,000 if it would be a boy.

Saturday Telegraph gathered that the sign of proof of seriousness, the doctor gave the
expectant mother the sum of N27,000 to seal the deal and for good feeding.

Trouble had however started when Lawrence delivered a baby boy and had a change of
mind to sell as agreed.

She reportedly filed a complaint at the Igbogene Division of the Police Station after the
hospital refused to release the baby to her. She stated that prior to the delivery, she had
arranged with the doctor and nurse of the hospital to sell the baby to a woman now at
large, at the sum of N200,000 only, but upon delivery of the baby, she changed her mind
and refused to sell the baby as agreed.

We need to amend Procurement Act-Saraki

The paper report that the President of the Senate, Bokua Saraki, said the Senate would
immediately commence the amendment of the Procurement Acts as a means of ensuring
the actualization of the objective of the 2016 budget.

Saraki, while addressing the organizers of the Made in Aba Trade Fair who visited him in is
office, said certain sections of the needed to be reviewed ensure judicious utilization of the
resources available in the budget. He said the Act would be amended to ensure that the
‘Made in Nigeria’ goods were patronized and that government agencies only resorted to
imported goods when there were no local alternatives. He also said that areas of the law
dealing with advance payment for government procurement should be scrutinized.

Saraki said, this is the only way we can create jobs, solve the problem of unemployment
and stop the growing army of aggrieved youths who pose danger to society.

Asset Acquisition: 220 firms owing N1.14tr, says AMCON

The Asset Management of Nigeria (AMCON), SAID Seawolf Nigeria Limited altogether
with 219 other companies was indebted to it to the tune of N1.14trillion.

The disclosure which was contained in a list of debtors released recently by the

representing 42 per cent of the total indebtedness, according to an online news portal, Per
Second News.

A statement issued to this regard had it that ‘in furtherance of the statutory responsibility of
the acquiring eligible bank assets and putting them to economic use in a profitable
manner, the Asset Management Company of Nigeria has dissolved the Board of Aero
Contractors and appointed a manager over the affairs of the airline. AMCON is both the
majority shareholder and creditor of Aero.

According to AMCON, an industry-based management team will be put in place to provide

the highest level of professional competence, which will ensure a quick repositioning of
Aero Contractors.

APC: We’ll not back out of anti-graft war

In a statement here, the national leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has
said ‘no amount of pressure will make the party and its led government to back out of the
anti-graft war. According to the party, its campaign was premised on fight against
corruption, therefore it cannot back out that promise.
The Vice-president expressed his views and I think that he is stating the obvious. We were
all aware from the beginning that corruption would fight back and they would fight back
massively. It is left for the party to be steadfast, and no doubt that all that if all we, as a
government can achieve is to reduce drastically the destructive indecencies of corruption
in the polity, then we would have achieved a significant success.

N150bn suit: Tinubu, AIT settle out-of-court

In a statement under the subheading, the N150billion libel suit instituted by a former
governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, against Daar Communications Plc., owned by Chief
Raymond Dokpesi, AIT and seven others have been settled out-of-court.
6

The former governor and chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), had instituted
the N150 billion suit before Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe of an Ikeja High Court against the
defendants for allegedly peddling false accusation about his person in a documentary
entitled ‘Lion of Bourdilion’. Apart from the N150 billion damages, Tinubu is asking the
court for a reaction of the said offensive publication.

He also sought for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendant or its privies
from publishing or further publishing or broadcasting any defamatory material, including
the documentary, ‘Lion of Bourdilion’.

In the course of the proceeding, AIT had in turn counter claim against the claimant
(Tinubu) for a retraction of an apology for, and the sum of N200billion, representing
aggravated punitive and exemplary damages against the claimant for the damage done to
the corporate image of the organization.

Olubadan created unusual records, says Obasanjo

In a statement here, the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, said the late Olubadan,
Oba Samuel Odugade (1), created unusual and successful records during his life time.
Obasanjo disclosed this when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Olubadan
at his Monatan home in Ibadan, saying the records he left behind will be very difficult for
anyone to achieve.

Obasanjo who apologized to the family for coming late due to his tight schedules, said the
late Olubadan was a great man in Ibadan and Nigeria in general.

Suspended Worker: Ignore NLC, Okorocha tells Buhari

In a statement, the Imo State Government called on President Muhammadu Buhari to

ignore the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) petition to him to call on Imo State Governor,
Okorocha to order. While making a reference to the petition, the state government said
labour had failed to objectively look at the issues concerning the suspended workers.

A statement signed by Okorocha’s spokesman, Sam Onwuemeodo, said, ‘Wabba and his
people are doing what they should be expected to do in the circumstance. But our only
7

worry is that in showing solidarity or concern over the fate of the suspended workers, they
have failed to objectively look at the issue or circumstance warranting their suspension.

Page 10 of the paper had a cross section of suspected armed robbers who allegedly shot
a pregnant woman in her private part.

Detectives attached to the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, Special Intelligent
Response Team (SIRT), gasped in shock and revulsion as they listened with rapt attention
to confession to confessions of eight men arrested for robbery in the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja.

The shooting of the woman was said to have been done by Ava. He shot into the woman’s
private part, right in the presence of her husband, to ensure she died. He then shot her
husband’s leg, the paper reported.

According to the robbers, they couldn’t join the big league of robbers for a long time
because they didn’t have the right weapons. But the rhythm of their operations changed
after they met a prison official and policeman who started supplying them with ammunition.
After their arrest, police recovered three AK47 rifles and four revolvers from them.

PAPER CRITICS

The writer made use of a blend of British and American formats in its quotations. It did not
stick to a particular format of writing. For instance, the use of quotation mark and question
mark (“ ‘). The writer made use of the American usage by using a double quotation,
instead of the British format of single quotation.

Again, the writer placed full stop before quotation mark, and other pages placed quotation
marks before the full stop. This is a blend of American and British formats. These are
found on page 8 under the subhead: ‘Doctor’s protest, an act of blackmail-Gov’., page 10
under the subhead: ‘Our leader shot pregnant woman in private part’, page 37 under the
heading: ‘Dike’s solo: Visual conversation on State of the Nation’.

There is a typographical error of the name Oluhola Ricketts instead of Olushola Ricketts
on page 19 under the heading Taiwo Ajai-Lycett: At 75, my best yet to come. A proves of
8

the correct name was repeated on page 34 under the heading Fefe: I read law but prefer
to do music.

The paper which was published on Saturday 6 February, 2016 was typographically written
on its 3rd page as was written on 6 February, 2015. Evidence on page three, while page
four of the newspaper carried the correct date as 6 February, 2016 to the end.

The paper had some opening quotations without closing it. For instance, page 37 had a
quotation “we will encounter in our everyday life precipitate mixed viewpoint concerning
our collective experiences but ended u with a full stop (.), and went ahead to open another
one with “It is that provided the catalyst or premise for exploration, research and visual
conversation in the form of this exhibition

NEWS COVERED

Fela and March to Democracy

A popular Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti was given credit for his activism which brought him
face to face with the military and which also rattle the maximum rulers during the dark days
of dictatorship. He was an accomplished musician no doubt who used his song to promote
black consciousness and African culture.

It is to hi eternal credit that he looked the military straight in the eye and told them what
they do not want to hear.

When eventually Obasanjo set up the justice Kalu Anya tribunal to look into the destruction
of Kalakuta, the verdict was that the mayhem was the handiwork of unknown soldiers. Fela
brazenly gave it black to the military by releasing another damming track, Unknown
Soldier.

Page three (3) of the newspaper carried a full-page of an advertisement of the Daily
Telegraph Publishing company Ltd. presenting New Telegraph Economic Summit 2015
with a theme “Beyond Monthly Allowance: State of the Nigerian States, dated to schedule
on October 27, 2015 by 10am prompt at Lantana Hall, Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos with
designated speakers.

Page four (4) carried a story with a headline “Used and dumped: Sad story of oil empress,
Diezani.

The paper had it that it is often said that when the going id good, many people will be your
friends but when the going becomes tough, they will run away. This aptly captured the
current situation of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-
Madueke, who was arrested in London by the National Crime Agency on Allegations of
Bribery and Money Laundering.
11

It was widely believed that she sat on top of a gold mine and had so much favour to
dispense to anyone that came across her on a good day. She spearheaded policies that
encouraged the growth of indigenous firm with increase capacity to compete with the
multinationals in the oil and gas industry.

It was her painstaking pursuit of the Nigerian Content in the Industry that gave birth to the
Likes of Capital Oil, Sahara Energy, Transfigura, Atlantic Energy and several others.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, where she made history as the first
female head, has reportedly deleted her name from their website. Chevening Scholarship
in the United Kingdom, an institution that once held Diezani as a role model, has deleted
her name from its honours list. Many more of these sad developments are likely to follow in
the coming days. It is curious that neither the People’s Democratic Party nor even her
colleagues in the Federal Executive Council during the regime of President Goodluck
Jonathan have said a word since Diezani’s travails begun.

The Presidency had since confirmed her arrest in London, over allegations of corruption
and money laubdering and said it was working closely with the law enforcement agencies
in the United Kingdom.

Crackdown on drug barons nets N2.2bn cocaine, hemp

Operatives of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have turned the heat
on Indian hemp growers and drug peddlers in a major crack down. This resulted in the
arrest of 100 suspected drug barons in Osun State and 210 in Ondo State.

One of the suspects is a 45-year-old woman, Ikeade (other name witheld), arrested with 49
bags of Indian hemp in Osun State. The state Commander of NDLEA, Mrs. Sylvia Ekaete-
Egwunwoke, told Daily Sun that Ikeade was arrested at Ikeji Arakeji, on Thursday,
December 17, 2015, through intelligence gathering. She also disclosed that about 100
unrepentant drug barons were prosecuted by NDLEA in the state in 2015. All of them were
convicted.

While speaking with Daily Sun, Ikeade said it was one Moses that kept the 59 bags of the
Indian hemp with her. She claimed that initially, she did not want to accept the stuff, but
12

later changed her mind because Moses promised to give her part of the proceeds after
selling the drug:

“I have known Moses for two years now. He had earlier kept 20 bags of Indian hemp with
me, but unknown persons came and stole them from where I kept them when I went out.
When I told Moses that thieves had stolen the 20 bags of hemps he kept with me, he said I
should not worry about it.

“Moses later brought another 59 bags and I told him that I could not keep the hemp for him
again, but he pleaded with me. Then I told him that I didn’t want to get into trouble with the
NDLEA because I knew that being in possession of Indian hemp is a crime. But Moses
assured me that there would be no problem and promised me that he would give me some
money after selling them.

Page five (5) of the same newspaper had a story captioned “N101.8bn fraud: Again, EFCC
grills Akpabio.

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio was interrogated over allegations
of fraud said to run into billions of naira.

Akpabio had explained why he was interrogated on a telephone chat on a late night
programme on African Independent Television.

According to his statement, he said: ‘I actually did go to the EFCC. What happened was
that before my accident, the EFCC actually did invite me because of the petitions that
some people wrote and as a law-abiding citizen, I had the mind to answer to the invitation.
Unfortunately, I had an accident”. So when I returned and felt stronger, I decided to go
there to find out what it was all about. There is no way you can be governor of a state for
eight years and some people will not write petitions against you or say things against some
of your policies and programme.

In s separate interview with Premium Times, Akpabio said. ‘I am a law-abiding citizen, and
whenever I am summoned to answer questions about how I served my people, I will
always respond.
13

The story had it that the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren
could not be reached for official comment as at the time of filing the report.

Bloody weekend in Ogun, Ebonyi, Adamawa

This was tragic news content in the paper. The story had it that one person was killed,
while another sustained serious injury when a diesel-laden tanker crashed at Owode/Ijako
area, along the Lagos-Abeokuta express way.

Eyewitness told Sunday Telegraph that the contents spread to the residential areas where
it eventually led to a fire that burnt three houses and two cars.

It was learnt that the driver, who was already soaked with diesel, unconsciously moved
near a generating set while trying to seek help.

his clothes caught fire, which spread to the tanker and nearby houses, source said a
commercial motorcyclist, who has come to pick a passenger at one of the affected houses,
sustained serious injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

In a similar vein, reports from Kirchinga Local Government Area of Adamawa State
indicated that a fierce gun duel took place between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram
insurgent who launch an attack on the village.

The casualty figures on both sides could not be ascertained as at the time of filing the
report.

My Girlfriend Abandoned Me Because I Went Blind

The page carried a snapshot of a grown-up male, named Chijioke Anthony Onyenwe.

Chijioke had a sweetheart, who had agreed to marry him. The lady, Chioma said she loved
him to distraction and he was happy because he couldn’t imagine life without Chioma. He
counted on his family, friends and fiancée to be his anchors as the storms raged in his life,
leaving him confused and panicking.

In a developing story, Chioma said that he should stop looking for her, that she cannot
marry a blind man who would never see her. since then they lost contact.

NMA urges Okorocha to pay doctors’ eight months’ salaries.

Few weeks after medical students of Imo State University protested deteriorating
academic conditions, medical doctors in the state have raised alarm that healthcare
service delivery in the state under governor Rochas Okorocha may soon collapse.

In a reaction to Labour stand on the concessioning process, Governor Okorocha’s

spokesman, Sam Onwuemeodo said, Labour Unions all over the world are always
progressive and not retrogressive.

Onwuemeodo added that government has not concessioned any public institution but has
concessioned only the management of the affected public institutions in the state.

Protests: APGA Desperate to win - PDP

Here is a political framework of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accusing the All
Progressive Grand Alliance of orchestrating a cosmetic protest in Abia State against the
verdicts of election petition tribunals, describing it as an indication of desperation to win.

The party added that the strength, weight and financial muscle of APGA, which it said, was
concentrated in Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, was weakened in the 2015 general
elections with the defeat of APGA former National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh by PDP
candidate in the senatorial election.

It was further noted that the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party assured
that it is solidly behind the governor, government and people of Abia State in the electoral
feats.

CRITICS ON THE PAPER

Although page 22 sets an entry into the contents of the section of Body & Soul, but with
blur and shadowed prints, both on texts and graphics. It doesn’t depict professionalism.

The section under BODY & SOUL, the paper had on its contents:

Cover: I2 married my soul mate; my father researched him well before he allowed him to
marry me – Page 24-25.

Beauty: The next time your nails breaks or polish gets chipped, don’t panic – Page 27

2. Page 37 had a bold print of the heading “How I Was Detained In the Cemetery”, but
there is a typographical error on the spelling of ‘cenetery, instead of Cemetery’.

3. The beginning page of the stories under FAITH began with its contents as follows:

News: UNILORIN Christian fellowship holds reunion – Page 43.

Interview: I wasn’t ashamed to marry my hubby-Chidinma Nwobi – Page 40

Sermon: I know whom I have believed – Page 42.

Sermon: 21 strategies to overcome marital delay – Page 45.

This page of the newspaper had the following headlines above, but surprisingly the first
story (Nigerian Children Shine as Ambassadors of Peace) did not appear in the contents,
but went ahead with the second story (I wasn’t ashamed to marry my hubby), by Chidinma
Nwobi.

4.Page 45 of the newspaper had a story, examining seven out of the 21 strategies to
overcome marital delay, which is assumed to have begun from a particular series, but did
not refer to which date neither does it indicate any page number where the remaining story
could be found.
16

5. The two stories captured in page 51, which is allegedly classified under the Business
News should have been taken to Body & Soul or Faith section, as we also had in page 45
(coping when teenagers fall in love and 21 strategies to overcome marital delay).

So, there should be an outright classification of these stories based on their priorities.

Above all, the paper is nicely arranged, used a concise diction in its story elaboration.
Good paragraph development for the inside stories, and maintained a four-column page
making
