Reporting verbs

In English, there are 5 different ways to report what someone is saying:

1. Verb + infinitive (with or without an object):


She asked him to pick up the children.
2. Verb + -ing (with or without an object):
He admitted being lost.
3. Verb + preposition + -ing:
I confessed to feeling out of my depth.
4. Verb + object + preposition + -ing:
He congratulated me on winning the medal.
5. Verb + that:
She said that they were running late.
