Revision activity 1 Teacher’s notes and key

Confusing words
Activity Teams
Aim Students revise confusing words introduced in
First Certificate Masterclass.
Time 20 minutes
Number of students Any
Before class Photocopy enough worksheets for each student in the class.

Procedure
1 Organise the class into small teams and give every student a worksheet.
2 Check they understand the words bet and gamble. Explain clearly how to play the
game as follows:
Teams look at the first example and decide if the word in italic is correct or
incorrect. If they think it is correct, they put a tick in the ‘OK’ column. If they
think it is incorrect, they decide with their team members what the correct word
should be, and write it in the ‘Correction’ column.
Teams then bet between 1–100 points on their answer, depending on how sure
they are, e.g. if they are not really sure what should replace ‘hardly’, they could
gamble a few points, but if they are absolutely sure that ‘hardly’ is wrong and they
can correct it, they could gamble more.
If they are correct, they add the number of points they bet to their total. If they are
wrong, they must deduct the bet from their total. For example, if a team bets 10
points on ‘hard’ as a correction, their new total would be 210 (200 + 10). If they
bet 10 points that ‘hardly’ is correct, their new total would be 190 (200 – 10).

3 Teams read the sentences, making corrections and deciding how much to bet.
4 When they have finished, tell the teams to swap papers with each other. Supply the
teams with a correct list of words and tell them to mark each others, adding or
deducting points accordingly. The team which finished with the most points is the
winner.
