Parameters Observations
Legibility The gully does have a unique identity due
to food stalls & stationery stores but lacks
additional features & amenities as opposed
to its adjacent gullies.
Microclimate The gully often has a higher temperature as
compared to its adjacent roads due to the
lack of shade from trees.
Vegetation The gully has very spares vegetation. It
lacks both under canopy & canopy
vegetation.
Noise The major noise sources include
pedestrians & two-wheelers. The noise of
vehicles causes’ disturbance to the
pedestrians & residents of the gully. The
street lacks any kind of noise buffers.
Water management The gully lacks rain water drains and open
ground/soil to take in excess surface water
run-off.
Safety The gully lacks well maintained footpaths
causing the pedestrians to use the vehicular
road for movement. In addition to this,
many riders cross speed limits.
Visual aesthetics The gully does capture the essence of a
food street used mostly by college
students. However, it is monotonous and
lacks colour. Absence of vegetation further
decreases its visual aesthetics. Haphazardly
parked
two-wheelers and abruptly places light
poles with hanging wires can be seen.
Street furniture The gully lacks street furniture. Plinth steps
of each building are often used for seating.
Signage A signage indicating the address of the gully
is present at the entrance. Apart from this,
only shop name boards/signages are to be
seen.
Pedestrian comfort Higher temperatures, lack of shade, shared
pathway for vehicles and pedestrians, lack
of seating spaces & parked vehicle
congestion degrade pedestrian comfort by
a large %. In addition to this, the air quality
is degraded due to smoking.
Proposals
The result of all proposals combined
improves the legibility of the gully.
Green spaces around seating areas,
throughout the gully to provide shade &
reduce temperature. Extending sloped
roofs over shop waiting areas for shade.
Green spaces with both under canopy &
canopy vegetation.
Proposing an exclusive pedestrian gully.
Green spaces along the gully pathway to
help rainwater reach the ground water
reserve. Introducing underground Rain
water harvesting systems below footpaths.
Eliminating all vehicular movements from
the gully. Providing ample parking spaces
for
Two-wheelers in the perpendicular road.
Green spaces, seating, vibrant & colourful
buildings & organic pathways to improve
visual aesthetics.
Seating areas at every 3rd shop surrounded
by green spaces.
Introducing parking sign boards at the
entrance & Do-not litter signages near all
seating areas. Retaining all shop name
boards/signages to uphold the identity of
the street.
Vegetation, seating areas/ benches, lack of
vehicles and indoor smoking areas to
improve pedestrian comfort.
