• Constructed in: 1975 - 1978


• Program: Social housing with 160 units of two and three
bedroom flats (MIG)
• Client: Tara co-operative society
• Tara apartment is a group of housing project commissioned by
Tara co-operative society, the first housing project in Delhi.
• The concept was introduced to rehabilitate the people who were
affected by the 1947 partition and had now where to settle
down after their retirement from their professional lives. Site location: Guru Ravidas Marg, New Delhi, India.
• The famous architect Charles Correa was roped in to design a
unique architectural concept.
• Tara housing group has more than 125 units and 375 people per
hectare.
• The Tara pays deep attention to the activities which happen in
the central garden and leave the interaction of traffic behind a
wall.

About Charles Correa
• Charles Mark Correa was an Indian architect and urban planner.
credited for the creation of modern architecture in post-Independent
India, he was celebrated for his sensitivity to the needs of the urban
poor and for his use of traditional methods and materials.
• He also designed the Bellapur housing in Navi, Mumbai and
Kanchanjunga Apartments.
• Charles Correa was Chief Architect for New Bombay (Navi Mumbai),
where he was strongly involved in extensive urban planning of the
new city. In 1984, Charles Correa founded the Urban Design Research
Institute in Bombay

Location & surroundings study
• Based on a comparative study of present housing designs that are set in the issues of urbanization, Tara
Apartment appears to be proper model answer for housing.
• Social aspects in terms of public interaction, security, physical comfort, community space, and view which
have been considered in Tara Apartments has relevance in today’s housing, which needs to be continued.
• Tara apartments are located along Guru Ravidas Marg street which leads to two big residential areas in the
north and the south.
• It is in the suburb of middle class families.
• It links the surrounding residential areas to a park adjacent to it.
• It houses both middle income group and lower income group people creating a harmonious balance
between them.
• The building turns its back on the street to prevent noise & dust thus allowing its residents to live in
comfort of greenery.
• Due to this the habitants of this housing are being able to escape the chaos and commotion of the city
while residing in it at the same time.
• Only pedestrian entries are allowed on the premises. Parking lots are at the back of the housing.
• The cantilevers of the building creates barriers form the sun so, thereby creating shaded areas.
