Abstract

Electric motors are everywhere. In your house, almost every mechanical

movement that you see around you is caused by an AC (alternating current) or DC (direct

current) electric motor. It is an electro-mechanical machine which converts the electrical

energy into mechanical energy. In this study, the researchers aimed to find the current

rating of the DC motor, the energy consumption of the DC motor and to calculate the

mechanical output power of a DC motor. The researchers used a pre-constructed 12V DC

Motor for the study. The data was obtained by tying a 1m thread to the rod and a

differing weight was added on the other end of the thread. A stopwatch was used to

measure the amount it takes for a certain weight to go up to the rod. Results shows that

the weight applied on the motor is directly proportional with power, torque and the

current rating of the motor but indirectly proportional with speed, energy consumption of

the motor and output mechanical power. To conclude, the 12V DC motor can only be

used for small appliances such as toys for it can only generate a small amount of power

and carry a little amount of load.
