17. Rulers like Nadir Shah invaded Delhi and plundered the wealth of the city. The new city
Shahjanabad became a rubble. Delhi which was before a very prosperous and rich city became poor.
18. Founder of Hyderabad state was Nizam ul Mulk Asaf Jah. He was first the governor of Awadh
but later took the charge of Deccan. He then took the advantage of the turmoil in Deccan and
founded Hyderabad.
19. Burhan-ul-Mulk tried to reduce Mughal influence in the Awadh region by taking the following
steps:
 He first of all reduced the number of office holders (jagirdars) appointed by the Mughals.
 He also reduced the size of jagirs, and appointed his own loyal servants to vacant positions.
 The accounts of jagirdars were checked to prevent cheating and the revenues of all districts
were re-assessed by officials appointed by the Nawab's court.

20. Asaf Jah brought skilled soldiers and administrators from northern India who welcomed the new
opportunities in the south. He appointed mansabdars and granted jagirs. He ruled independently.

21. The state of Awadh depended on local bankers and mahajans for loans. It sold the right to
collect tax to the highest bidders. These revenue farmers known as Ijaradars agreed to pay the
state a fixed sum of money. These developments made the positions of moneylenders and bankers
influential. They began to influence the management of the state's revenue system.

22. Aurangzeb’s campaigns in the Deccan region decreased his military and financial power. After
his death there was a war of succession among his sons. Mutual jealousy weakened the empire. Also
the later Mughals were not able to handle the empire
