BRAC Bank Limited – An Overview of the Organization

BRAC Bank Limited is a full service scheduled commercial bank. It has both local and
International Institutional shareholder. The bank is primarily driven with a view of creating
opportunities and pursuing market niches not traditionally meet by conventional banks. BRAC
Bank has been motivated to provide “best-in-the-class” services to its diverse assortment of
customers spread across the country under an on-line banking dais. At present, BRAC Bank is
one of the fastest growing banks in the country. In order to support the planned growth of its
distribution, network and its various business segments, BRAC Bank is currently looking for
impressive goal oriented, enthusiastic, individuals for various business operations. The bank
wants to build a profitable and socially responsible financial institution. It carefully listens to the
market and business potentials, It is also assisting BRAC and stakeholders to build a progressive,
healthy, democratic and poverty free Bangladesh. It helps make communities and economy of
the country stronger and to help people achieve their financial goals. The bank maintains a high
level of standards in everything for our customers, our shareholders, our acquaintances and our
communities upon, which the future affluence of our company rests. According to the Half-
Yearly Financial Statement of 2010- the number of Employees including contractual engaged for
the whole year or part there of (who received a total yearly remuneration of Tk. 36,000 or above)
were 6,306 whereas the total number of employees were 7,075 as the same period of pervious
year.

HR activities of BRAC Bank: BRAC Bank views the employees are the most valuable capital
of the organization. HR Division of BRAC Bank Limited recruits staff members through a
competitive selection process based on criteria determined by the needs of the Bank and the
requirements of the position. It focuses on hiring “right” people that foster learning, developing,
growing and striving organization. HR division has recruited 4847 regular staffs, outsourced
1139 employees and 2136 contractual employees in various grades. HR Division interviewed
some fourteen thousand job applicants throughout the years.

The bank has a strong focus on training towards enhancement of the skills and competencies of
their employees. They provide average 30 hours of training in a year to each employee.
Orientation Training In-House Training, Job Specific Training, Need based Local/Foreign
Training, Peer or supervisors’ coaching, E-Learning: Online Training & Evaluation, Branch
Development and CRO Assessment Program. The modules of e-learning include products &
services, divisional/departmental overview, rules and regulations and some soft skills. Every year
all regular employees of the Bank are required to take part in the e-learning Exam.

Benefits: The remuneration of employees consists of salary, house rent, medical allowance. The
Board reviews the basic salary range at least once every two/three years. The annual salary
revision and recommendation are done based on: Revised Pay Scale, Inflation adjustment rate &
Performance.

Along with house rent, medical allowance all regular employees get two bonuses each year. One
in Eid-Ul-Fitr and another during Eid-Ul-Azha only for Muslims. Employees from different
religion gets this bonus during their respective religious festivals. There is also a performance
bonus system. Amount of Performance Bonus will be 3% based on net profit after tax. Other than
the above benefit there is a Provident Fund System, a Gratuity System, Group Hospitalization
Insurance Policy, Employee Security and Welfare Fund maintained by the Bank. Regular
employees can apply for House Building Loan and Car Loan. All allowances are available to
only regular and confirmed employees but Car Allowances are only for the grades above Senior
Principal Officer (SPO).

HR Contract & Outsource Staff would get 1 bonus, which is 50% of this gross salary. Brac Bank
will reimburse hospitalization allowance to officer up to a maximum of Tk.35,000/- per annum,
for executives Tk.100,000/- & 200,000/- per annum. Regular employees who have completed at
least 5 Years continuous service are entitled to receive Gratuity Benefit. Last month’s basic
Salary multiplied by the year of service completed. The Bank will contribute in security fund
Taka 5.00/Thousand on last basic salary of each eligible employee yearly. BRAC Bank
contribute to the provident fund 10% of basic salary for all regular employees. Every member of
this fund on retirement is provided with a sum of money. BRAC bank provide employees from
JO to SPO with financial support (welfare fund) for incidents or events when the cost may not be
affordable for the employees. They are entitled to TK 50,000 for severe accident & extended
illness, TK 10,000 for SSC & HSC Degree, for BA/ BSS/ BSc/ BCOM/ BBA TK 20,000 & for
Master Degree/ MBA TK 50,000, for Marriage Ceremony TK 1,00,000. As part of employee
engagement initiative & entertainment BRAC arranges celebration of “Bengali New Year” and
“Women’s Day”.

Leave System: All officers will become eligible for annual leave of 24 working days after
completion of one calendar year. BRAC bank provides Casual leave up to 14days & 2 days
casual leave can be taken during a month. Casual Leave more than 3 days will be considered as
sick leave. Female employees will enjoy 4 months maternity leave. One employee will be
entitled to avail this leave for 2 times in her entire service period. An employee of BRAC bank
can avail study leave of maximum 2 years.

Promotion Pattern: BRAC Bank follows two types of promotions. Regular Promotion: Regular
promotion is given according to the employee’s regular performance. Promotion Performance
Matter (PM) is the annual performance report of individual employee of BRAC Bank which is a
ranking scale of individual employee. According to the policy any employee can’t get any
promotion within a year after the employee’s joining & he can’t get promotion after six months
of his previous promotion.

Reward and Recognition are provided to express appreciation for employee's hard work.
BRAC bank provides 4 levels of reward & recognition. LEVEL 1: Individual Contribution
Award & SME Monthly Award LEVEL 2: Departmental Committee Award LEVEL 3:
Organizational Competence Award LEVEL 4: Chairman’s Excellence Award.

BRAC bank believes an efficient human resources practices can provide an organization with
structure and the ability to meet business needs. That’s why they put full effort to meet all the
needs of the employees.

Analysis:

We have learnt about the HR process in our class, which worked as the benchmark while
analysing the HR data of BRAC Bank. The analysis of HR data of BRAC Bank is given below:
Recruitment & Selection: BBL’s (Brac Bank Ltd) recruitment & selection process is to make
sure the right candidates gets selected.

Training & Development: Besides job specific & specialized training, BBL also gives
importance on soft skills, which are very important factors for a person to be the best at
workplace.

Talent & Performance Management: BBL's various attempts to appreciate the talented
employees motivates their employees to perform more and make the best use their talent.

Career Development: BBL's two type of promotion system ensure the growth of their
employee's career, both in long term and short term. Both performance and loyalty for the
company are valued.

Compensation: The compensation system of BBL is also satisfactory. Besides regular payment
adjusted to inflation, they also provide funds and loans for employee's different basic needs,
which makes the compensation good enough.

Personal well-being: Above all, the HR policy of BBL ensures the well-being of personal life of
the employee by granting leaves, maternity leaves and educational leaves. If a employee gets
support for their personal growth & well-being, they can perform better in their professional life.

In conclusion of analysis, we can say that BBL's HR is doing good job to ensure the best
outcome from their employees. They are a good example of HR activities.

Recommendations:

The HR department at BRAC Bank Limited (BBL) is plentiful. But some Factors need to be
considered.

➢ Efficiently distribute the number of employees who fill the required position.

➢ Make the salary structure attractive for the employee.

➢ Reduce the additional workload for the employee.

➢ The personnel for personnel development should be increased, especially in the recruiting
area.
➢ The control of the HR department must be structured.

➢ Training must be motivating.

➢ They can turn to professional trainers for better training.

➢ Provide more training materials during training.

➢ After training, it is very important to pass a training assessment Program. BRAC have to
evaluate the trainees correctly.

➢ The online recruitment system is out of date, it needs to be improved.

So, these are the recommendations that BRAC bank could follow to meet the organizational
goals as well as to have a satisfied bunch of employees.
