EXERCISE NO 3

NAME: DATE:
Instruction: Put your solution on the ANSWER SHEET provided. For the authenticity of your
work, a handwritten solution must be provided. Also, you need to upload a one (1) file document
to be submitted at the VLE.

1. The Pinewood Furniture Company produces chairs and tables from two resources—labor
and wood. The company has 80 hours of labor and 36 board-ft. of wood available each
day. Each chair requires 8 hours of labor and 2 board-ft. of wood, whereas a table requires
10 hours of labor and 6 board-ft. of wood. The profit derived from each chair is $400 and
from each table, $100. The company wants to determine the number of chairs and tables to
produce each day to maximize profit.
a) Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.
b) Illustrate the objective and constraints lines using the graphical analysis.
c) Based on the graph, solve for the number of chairs and tables per day to maximize
profit (hint: show the feasible solutions and the optimal solution).

2. Solve for the following linear programming model:

Minimize 𝑍 = 8𝑥1 + 6𝑥2
subject to
4𝑥1 + 2𝑥2 ≥ 20
−6𝑥1 + 4𝑥2 ≤ 12
𝑥1 + 𝑥2 ≥ 6
𝑥1 , 𝑥2 ≥ 0

a) Graph the constraint equations

b) Determine the feasible solution area and points
c) Determine the optimal solution. Do you think we have an optimal solution
problem in this case? Why yes or why no?
