● Restorative Justice School Programs

● School Community Based (SCB)

● Speech Resource K-12

Academic Data

Students at Sligo Middle School are required to take the MAP (Measure of Academic

Progress) for Math and Reading three times per school year. Students are also required to take

quarterly progress checks as well as statewide standardized testing in the spring. As a school, we

primarily use the data from MAP testing, as each test is catered to the students ability. The data

for both MAP-M and MAP-R testing for this school year can be seen below.

Existing Technology & How It Is Used

Currently, we have some technology that is beneficial to our students. We have an

interactive whiteboard that can show documents and go over mathematical examples on. We are

also able to show videos and other multimedia tools using the internet. There is also a class set

(32 total) of touch screen Chromebooks. Each student in every period is assigned a number. They

are in charge of that Chromebook for the class period. If there are any problems with the

Chromebook, it is up to the students assigned that number to let their teacher know. Sligo Middle

School also has a variety of programs such as BrainPop, Classkick, Nearpod, and various other

technology resources that enhance learning and make math education more meaningful.

Currently, Sligo uses technology to complete classroom activities, play games to practice

concepts, and display student’s knowledge of what they have learned through various types of

assessments.

Statement of Need

Sligo’s collective school goal is to close the achievement gap as much as possible.

According to the school improvement plan, the main math objective is to “differentiate content,
process, and/or product to effectively work with diverse learners so that at least 80% of students

are being successful in mathematics” (Sligo Middle School, 2009 ). Based on the data provided,

it is clear that students in on grade level courses need more remediation, while students in

advanced courses need more enrichment opportunities]. Each student needs to be given the

opportunity to feel that they have achieved some sort of success in math class while learning in

an environment that is technologically safe and up-to-date.

Vision Statement

We believe that technology can be used to increase student engagement and opportunities

for student discourse. Technology can also be used to create real-life connections to content they

have learned in class. This will make learning more meaningful and relevant to the lives of my

diverse students. In our dream classroom, each student will have equal access to a high-quality

lesson that includes technology and rigor. All students will have access to the necessary

technology required to dive deeper into the curriculum and will have access to applications to

enhance rigor in their classes. Technology is the answer to help meet the needs of all students, no

matter their learning needs or previous experiences. Technology will allow students to gain

authentic knowledge and develop the essential maths, reading, and 21st-century skills they need

in education and the real-world.

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Students will use technology in math at least 3 times per week.

- Objective 1: After engaging with math apps/websites, students will be able to identify

the properties of quadratic functions 80% of the time.

- Objective 2: Given access to technology, students will be able to apply trigonometry

relationships to determine a missing side and angle with 80% accuracy.

Goal 2: Technology will be used to differentiate the needs of students while making math

learning more engaging.

- Objective 1: Students will be able to create a collaborative math project with 80%

accuracy using Google Slides, Nearpod, or other interactive presentation tools to present

their findings.

Goal 3: Students will increase their reading comprehension skills through access to

grade-appropriate text on Web 2.0 tools.

- Objective 1: Given access to Evernote, students will be able to annotate text with 80%

accuracy.

- Objective 2: Given access to Prezi, students will be able to summarize text and identify

main ideas with 80% accuracy.

Goal 4: Students will improve reading fluency by exploring grade-level content on the Internet.

- Objective 1: Given access to grade-appropriate content, students will be able to locate

resources in online databases with 80% accuracy.

- Objective 2: Using a note-taking platform, students will be able to gather research for

grade-level appropriate sites with 80% accuracy.

Implementation Plan

Students will use iPads within their general education classrooms and at home. Each

grade level will have 1:1 access to iPads to allow all students to meet the learning goals and
objectives in the school technology plan. Before using all school-provided technology, students

and their parents or guardians will be required to read, sign, and adhere to the Sligo Middle

School - Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for Students. The AUP governs the use of technology,

adds a layer of security for Sligo Middle School and its students, and provides the essential skills

students need to become responsible digital citizens in education and the real-world. Teachers

will introduce students to the new technology and provide tutorials, guidance, and support to

help students use the technology effectively. Students will begin using the technology three times

per week to meet the learning goals and objectives. By implementing the new technology,

students will use critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration

skills, in real-time. Allowing students to learn and work together in real-time will increase

student engagement, motivation, participation, and achievement in all subject areas. With iPads,

students will learn in new and innovative ways using the Prodigy Math game and educational

websites, communicate their research findings and Math solutions using Google Docs and

OneNote, and create engaging and meaningful projects to demonstrate their knowledge using

Google Slides, Nearpod, and Web 2.0 tools. For instance, students will use the Prodigy Math

game to play fun games that allow them to work collaboratively, develop essential math skills,

and earn prizes as they advance to different levels of the game. In addition, students will use

iPads to access engaging content, educational websites, and interactive learning activities that

allow them to develop and practice reading comprehension and literacy skills. Students will also

use iPads to access emerging applications and tools to create engaging videos, presentations,

infographics, and websites. This will allow students to communicate their learning and

demonstrate their skills in creative and meaningful ways. Students will use iPads to develop and

practice the essential 21st-century skills they need for the workforce.

Evaluation of Professional Development

Teachers will be required to complete a professional development (PD) survey after each

course. In addition, the school’s Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) will conduct quarterly

observations, track teachers’ progress using quarterly reports, and monitor and analyze student

assessment data on a systematic basis. This will be used to measure the effectiveness of PD,

determine if teachers are applying the knowledge and skills gained in PD courses, determine if

PD enhanced student learning and achievement, and identify future PD needs. The following

questions will be used for PD surveys:

- Was this PD informative? Why or why not?

- Did this PD meet your expectations? Why or why not?
- Did this PD build up your confidence with the technologies you will be using in the
classroom? Please explain your answer.
- How will you be integrating technology into your classroom?
- Will you be able to utilize these technologies in your class? Why or why not?
- Do you feel this PD was relevant to your class? Why or why not?
- After this PD do you feel more confident using math apps? Why or why not?
- Do you feel that iPads and Web 2.0 tools helped you with your classwork? Explain your
answer.
- Is there any task that is made more difficult because of the technology being used?
- What do you think can be improved and how would you achieve that?
- How have you used the knowledge and skills you gained in the PD course to create
engaging assessments that meet students’ unique needs? Provide an example.
- How much work was it to infuse technology into lesson plans and activities? Please
explain your answer.
- Is there a PD you would like to see in the future?
- Do you have any suggestions to improve this PD course?

Evaluation of Plan Objectives

Teachers will assess students’ knowledge and skills to determine if the school technology

plan goals were met. Teachers will use a combination of anecdotal notes and data obtained from

the Maryland State Assessment (MSA), learning activities, projects, quizzes, and exams to

measure the intended outcomes. Teachers will also track students’ performance and progress on a

systematic basis. This would allow teachers to identify areas that require improvement and make

instructional decisions to enhance learning and promote goal attainment.

Implementation of Timeline

When new technologies become available to not only teachers but students as well, the

achievement gap can be closed. At the same time, it is possible to increase student engagement

and opportunities for all. Teachers not only need professional development to assist with this

need but also adequate time to become familiar with new technology to better assist students
with tasks. Sligo Middle School will provide adequate time and PD to facilitate this while

aligning with the standards set in this plan.
