Title of the Reading Summary (seven [7] sentence Max)
Anderson portrays a nation as a socially
constructed community imagined by those who consider themselves to be members of that group. Anderson identifies three paradoxes: first, the objective modernity of nations in the eyes of historians vs. their subject antiquity in nationalists' eyes, second, formal universality as a socio-cultural concept, and third, the political power of nationalism as such vs. their philosophical poverty and even incoherence. Anderson uses the graves of the Unknown Soldier as an illustration of nationalism.
Although the tombs of unknown warriors are either empty or contain recognized remains, each country that has such memorials claims these soldiers as their own. Regardless of the Unknown Soldiers' true origins, these nations have incorporated them into their imagined society.
Imagined Communities: Reflections on the
Origins and Spread of Nationalism How does this develop and/or promote nationalism to you? They build and promote nationalism, in my opinion, through the effort to removing concepts of divine right and hereditary royalty from control, and merging printing press capitalism with national calendars, clocks, and language expressed in books and the publication of daily newspapers.
Did Rizal demonstrate popular nationalism
through his works? Justify your answer. Yes, he displays nationalism on his works. Dr. Jose Rizal is a Nationalist in my opinion. Because he was a strong supporter of important reforms during the Spanish rule, demonstrating his love for our country, the Philippines. He is the author of a book that has demonstrated his beliefs and from which people are still learning today. It demonstrates love for our country since he wishes for unity in his country without resorting to violence or revolution against those who seek to elevate themselves above Filipinos, instead using his knowledge and values to write novels. He stressed the value of the Tagalog language, emphasizing that language will not be used to determine their socioeconomic standing. But, at the end of the day, Dr. Rizal simply wants our country to be united and for us to be proud of our Filipino heritage because we will be proud as Filipinos.
How will the study of our national history affect
your actions in the present?
The study of our nation’s history has an impact
on our current activities because it connects us to the past by revealing that certain human experiences are universal across time. National history also influences our understanding of certain persons and societies, including their beliefs and traditions, as well as the cultural distinctions that distinguish each other as a person's identity. Past events serve as a guide in shaping and molding the knowledge of future generations so that they can understand what our heroes have done for us. Of course, we should be grateful to them because many of their discoveries have been applied and adapted to serve us with great convenience and comfort in our daily lives. It might be in terms of education, economics, or politics; in this way, we have a broad understanding of the subject, and it is a part of our community.
