Practical - 1
Sacks sentence completion test

Aim- To access the study of Personality using Sacks sentence completion test.

Introduction
Personality
Personality is distinctive and a reliable way in which the individuals think, feel and behave.
Personality should not be confused with character or temperament as they fall under the
umbrella of personality of an individual.
A major reason that there is not one single explanation that can be given for personality is
because it is still very dif cult to measure 100% accurately and scienti cally. Therefore
there are several perspectives or viewpoints of personality :-

• Trait approaches - Trait approaches attempt to or aim as describing the

characteristics of the personality of an individual in an effort to predict the future
of an individual. A trait can be described as a consistent, enduring way of
behaving.
One of the earliest attempts were made by Gordon Allport . Allport scanned for
several words that could possibly be traits, he found about 18,000, then paired
then pairing them down to 200 traits after eliminating the synonyms. He believed
that these traits guide the individuals behaviour in different situation and that
each individuals constellation of traits were unique.
Raymond cattle described personality in a more compact way . He says there are
two types of traits , Source traits the basic traits that underlie the surface traits for
example - Shyness or being quiet
and Surface traits are the aspects of personality or the traits that can be easily
seen by other people. For example - Introversion or extroversion.
Cattell discovered 16 source traits and late also discovered his assessment
questionnaire known as The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire ( 16 PF).

• Type approaches- The basic assumption of type theorists is that a person can be
assigned to one type or a group. For example- people can be divided into either
passive or active type. Carl G. Jung proposed the type theory and suggested that
people could be grouped into two basic types such as introverts and extraverts, on
the basis of their attitudes. He used the terms attitudes to depict the individuals
experiences.

• Psychoanalytic perspective- It is signi cant because of the work of Sigmund

Freud . Freud believed in the concept of unconscious mind and its role. He says
fi
fi
fi
that there are layers of consciousness in the mind and believed in the in uence of
unconscious mind on conscious behaviour . According to him, the mind is divided
into three parts - Preconscious , Conscious and Unconscious mind.

• Projective Techniques- These personality assessment test provides the ambiguous

visual stimuli to the participant and ask them to respond with whatever comes to mind.
The participant will and can project his or her unconscious concerns or fear onto the
visual stimulus to the analyst.
One of the well known projective test is the Rorschach Inkblot Test , developed by
Hermann Rorschach . This test uses 10 inkblots as the ambiguous stimuli.
The other one is the Thematic Apperception Test ( TAT) by psychologist Henry Murray .
This test uses 20 pictures of people in ambiguous situations as the visual stimuli and the
participate is asked to tell a story about the people in those pictures.

• Adjustment- According to American Psychological Association ( APA)

“Adjustment is a change in attitude, behaviour, or both by an individual on the
basis of some recognised need or desire to change, particularly to account for
the current environment or changing, atypical, or unexpected conditions. It may
be assessed via a type of survey called an adjustment inventory, which
compares a person’s emotional and social adjustment with a representative
sample of other individuals. A well-adjusted person is one who satis es needs in
a healthy, bene cial manner and demonstrates appropriate social and
psychological responses to situations and demands.”

Review of Literature

• 1) I. Sarancha et al. ( 2021) “PERSONAL VALUES IN THE STRUCTURE OF

THE SOCIAlL ENVIRONMENT AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY”- This article
presents the after e ects of an examination on the e ect of the qualities
arrangement of individual perspectives and upsides of the person to pick a
calling, just as resulting e ect of this decision on the social climate overall. For
the work, the authors utilised the accompanying strategies: educational
analysis, test and di erent techniques for deciding qualities in the construction
of the character (Methodology M. Rorschach, Sack's Sentence Completion
Test, projective test strategies Tree of qualities ,-genuine/I-ideal). During the
test, the authors likewise went to the technique for talking understudies (last
courses of master’s and graduate degrees) and working experts in the
instructive climate to decide the e ect of individual qualities on pro cient ability.
They had the option to decide the components of expert movement
comprehension of the social advancement needs in the instructive climate, its
qualities and shortcomings for the development of the social request of the

state and the person, just as ways of working on the social climate based on
the proposed types of work with the upsides of a future expert.

2) Gureiva et al,(2019) “Social Representations about Reputation as the Company's Social

Capital” -This research article addresses issues related to social representations of reputation
and the most important principles of the founding of reputation. 479 people participated in
the study. The aim of our research is to examine the socio-psychological representations of
reputation in the context of the organisational culture of the International Company in order
to develop the tools to manage the reputation of the company in Russia. The study used the
following tools: questionnaire, Sacks' sentence completion test by Sacks and Levy. A
signi cant and statistical evaluation of the results based on the method of "incomplete
sentences" allows us to formulate several statements. It was that found practical
con rmation and the representation of reputation is perceived as honesty, credibility,
openness, reliability, quality of products and services, which represent the core of the
companies' social capital. All this is a con rmation of the existence of a solid management
of the internal reputation of the company, which studies the peculiarities of the construction
of reputation and the creation of a positive social representation of the company. The results
made it easier to create a classi cation of people based on different perceptions of the
reputation phenomenon, different situations, objects and basic functions of reputation.

• 3) Oyunsuren & Yermolaev,( 2019) “Happy Family Representation: a Cross-

Cultural Analysis of Russian and Mongolian Youth” article presents an empirical
study of stories by young Russians and Mongols about a happy family. 120
Russian and Mongolian youths (ages 18-30) participated in the study. Results
were determined using the Charles Os good semantic di erential method, the
Sacks and Levy sentence completion test, and various questionnaires.
Factorial, cluster, and qualitative analyses were used to process the results. The
study showed some ethnic and gender di erences in the concept of "happy
family." Young Russians and Mongols seem to follow di erent ideal models. For
Mongolian youth, a happy family was an "extended family" and a "paternal
family." For Russian women, a happy family was a family with few children,
while Russian men had opposite views. Unlike in Mongolia, the family
institution in Russia develops modern ideas of a happy family life. Young
Mongolians take their parents' families as role models, while young Russians
follow the role models of the media. The romantic notions of marriage, however,
were quite similar in both groups.

• 4) N. Kostromina et al. (2016) “ Trust in and Perception of Parents in Children

with Di erent Coping Strategies ”-The article reviews the problem of children’s
trust in relation to children’s perception of parents. Children of di erent age (N=
119). The following methods: the projective techniques ,Kinetic family
drawing,The Sacks sentence completion test ,Children’s coping questionnaire.
Data processing: content analysis, correlation analysis (Spearman’s rho), IBM
SPSS Statistics 20.0. The study has revealed that as children grow older their
perception and understanding of trust shifts from family relationships to
friendships. Relationships with peers start to “oust” close family relationships

spurred by the emerging need to share information and to nd an object of
trust which would demonstrate speci c qualities.

5) Sundermann ( 2015) , “The principle objective of this review was to investigate

whether a Sentence Completion Test is reasonable and helpful in measuring
fatigue ”.

A certain estimation strategy, the Sentence Completion Test, was utilised to

assess fatigue veri ably. To evaluate fatigue expressly three unequivocal
estimation techniques, a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), the Vitality/Fatigue sub-
scale of the Research and Development 36-Item Health Survey (RAND-36), and the
Checklist For Individual Strength (CIS-20-R) were moreover applied. Altogether, 50
members nished the Questionnaire . Subsequent to nishing the surveys the
member was approached to code his/her replies on the particular things of the
certain test as having respect to fatigue or vitality or none of them. What's more,
the researcher coded the things autonomously. To assess the rater

understanding between the three distinctive raters a dependability investigation

was directed. Finally, the Sentence Completion Test was connected with each
express test to assess potential relations.

Results- The information investigation showed feeble to unobtrusive Inter rater-

arrangement between the three diverse raters. Further, the connections between's
the certain estimation strategies and the unequivocal estimation techniques
showed no critical connection. The consequences of the information examination
uncovered just little sign that these certain estimation techniques are reasonable
and helpful to access fatigue . Nonetheless, more methodologically precise and
very much researched certain

estimation strategies could be promising to gauge exhaustion all the more

precisely and may ll in as a helpful other option or expansion close to existing
normalised unequivocal estimations.

Description of the tool

• Theoretical Background- Sacks Sentence Completion Test is a projective test

developed by Dr Sacks and Dr Levy. Sacks sentence completion test consists of words or
phrases which is referred to as Stems that people are asked to complete these stems or
sentences. The main crux of the test is how an individual answer these sentences which
in turn re ect what kind of person they are. Sacks sentence completion test is a 60 item
test that asks the participants to complete these 60 items with the rst thing that comes to
their mind. These 60 items are divided in 4 concerned areas -
• Family
• Sex
• Interpersonal relationship
• Self concept

• Reliability and Validity - The test can be interpreted both in Subjective form
and Objective form. The subjective analysis can be understood by the motivations
that underlie in the responses of the participant. And the objective analysis is on
fl
fi
fi
fi
fi
fi
fi
fi
the basis of the score that the analyst gives for the responses. The test provides
with multiple opportunities for the analyst to understand the underlying
motivations in the responses of the participant.
The validity of the sentences in the completion test must be determined
independently and the scoring the interpretations must be followed on the basis of
the manual of the particular test. Therefore, the sacks sentence completion test has
a high face validity. For example - there are different attitude items which has 4
questions in each attitude which is scored together, interpreted together , the
interpretations summary is formed with the clinicians psychological skills towards
the participants attitude in a particular area . Thus ,each attitude has different
summary criteria on the basis of which scores are given.

• Scoring of the test- “The rating sheet has been devised for the SSCT which brings
together, under each attitude, the four stimulus items and the subjects responses to
them.”
“A rating is then made of the subjects degree of disturbance in this area according to the
The following scale-”
“ (2) Severely disturbed- appears to require therapeutic aid in handling emotional
