CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY
A. Background
Learning is a process of interaction between educators and students. The educator, in this
case the teacher, has a position as a director and source of knowledge that will be listened to by
students. In a class, it consists of several individual students. Each individual has the character
and nature of each which is certainly different from one another. This difference will have an
impact on the learning process, where a teacher cannot teach with only one type of model.
Because, with this difference, it will result in inequality in the ability of students to understand
the lessons that have been given. The learning process is characterized by an educational
interaction that occurs, namely an interaction that is aware of the goal. This interaction is rooted
in the educators (teachers) and pedagogical learning activities for students, proceed
systematically through the stages of design, implementation, and evaluation. Learning does not
occur instantly, but proceeds through certain stages. In learning, educators facilitate students so
that they can learn well.
In the era of modernization as it is today, the world of education requires a qualified
educator who not only has the ability to teach, but they are also able to provide motivation if
students experience a downturn, for example, their grades drop. As a wise educator candidate.
We must know the characteristics of our students. The characteristics of students are very diverse
and have different potentials, so as prospective educators, we should be able to direct and
motivate our students to find their skills. Do not let us as prospective educators, we are
indifferent to their abilities and potential. This thinking is certainly very wrong because this will
cause our students to become lazy and unmotivated, especially if their grades in school are bad.
Therefore, a learning strategy is carried out.
The term strategy is often used in many contexts with different meanings.
Etymologically, strategy comes from the Greek word strategos which means commander or
general, general science, commanding science. Strategy in the world of education can be
interpreted as an art and science to bring teaching in front of the class in such a way that the
goals that have been set can be achieved effectively and ethically. The term learning appears
gradually and its development is due to the attention to students in education and teaching
efforts. Learning strategy can be interpreted as a plan that contains a series of activities designed
to achieve certain goals. Kemp (1995) mentions learning strategy as a learning activity that must
be carried out by teachers and students so that learning objectives can be achieved effectively
and efficiently. Meanwhile, Dick and Carey (1985) state that a learning strategy is a set of
learning materials and procedures that are used together to create learning outcomes for students.
