ROTO-JET PUMP
DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY
1. GENERAL
1.1. Introduction
This manual has been prepared to assist you in understanding the construction and
the correct methods of disassembly and assembly for your new Roto-Jet pump.
The Roto-Jet pump is the simplest and most reliable high pressure pumping device
ever invented. The design, material and workmanship incorporated in the
construction of Roto-Jet pumps makes them capable of giving long, trouble free
service. The life and satisfactory service of any mechanical unit, however, is
dependent upon correct application, proper installation, periodic inspection and
careful maintenance.
We urge you to read and follow all of the directions in this manual. If additional
copies are required or other detailed instructions are needed, the information may
be obtained upon request.
The exclusive patented Roto-Jet pump has only two basic working parts...a rotating
case and a stationary pick-up tube collector arm within the rotating case. The
Roto-Jet design completely eliminates the need for packing glands, wear rings or
multiple stages as used in conventional centrifugal pumps, and also eliminates the
complex pistons, rods, valves and springs required in reciprocating pumps.
The Roto-Jet operates in the following manner: Liquid enters the intake manifold
and passes into the rotating case where centrifugal force increases the pressure of
the liquid and at the same time its velocity is increased. The velocity of the liquid in
the rotor is converted into additional pressure as it jets into the pick-up tube.
RO/ROH 3x2 1
1.3. Pump Identification
Roto-Jet pumps are designated by a series of letters and numbers, such as ROA-
S484. The first group, ROA, is an indication of the basic mechanical configuration
and the second group, S484, designates the pick-up tube size. The pump
nameplate gives both the pump model designation and the pump serial number.
Permanent records for this pump are kept by the serial number and it must
therefore be used with all correspondence and spare parts orders. This will ensure
replacement of components in the original materials of construction.
2. DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY
2.1. General
The following are recommended dismantling and assembly instructions for your
Roto-Jet pump. We urge that the instructions be read thoroughly before attempting
to dismantle the unit. The component parts must be handled with care during the
dismantling and assembly process. The work area should be clean and be
equipped with the required tools.
Depending on the accessibility of the pump and the extent of the repair or
inspection required, the pump can be dismantled in place on its foundation.
However, to facilitate the disassembly procedure, it is recommended that the pump
be removed from its foundation and placed securely into a position in which the
pump shaft is facing downward and the manifold is facing upward. Roto-Jet pumps
offers assembly stands for mounting the unit during disassembly and assembly.

2.7. Cautions
2.7.1. Do not re-use o-rings on components during reassembly as they lose their seal
integrity and may leak.
2.7.2. When replacing pick up tube, always replace pick up tube capscrews to avoid
attachment complications.
2.7.3. Never re-use bearing locknuts when replacing bearings as they lose their positive
locking capability when removed.
2.7.4. During rotor cover removal mark location of cover on rotor and location of each
capscrew so that they can be assembled in same location. Failure to do this may
create an out of balance condition making pump susceptible to vibration damage.
2.7.5. Replacement of major rotating component such as rotor or cover will require
rebalancing of rotating assembly.
2.7.6. Be sure all parts are free of dirt, stray metal chips or any foreign matter and have
been thoroughly cleaned.
2.7.7. All torque values given assume lubrication with an anti-seize agent to threads and
underside of bolt heads.
2.7.8. WARNING: When lifting the pump into the vertical position with or without the use of
the assembly stand a swivel hoist ring shall be used in place of the lifting eye.
Reference APPENDIX A Drawing.

NOTE: Check to see if oil slinger (20) will rotate freely after bearings are
installed. If oil slinger (20) rotates freely, place the shaft sleeve (28),
bearing cap slinger (27) and the used bearing locknut (46) back onto
the shaft. Tighten locknut using the bearing locknut torque wrench
adaptor until the oil slinger (20) is secured. Do not exceed 400 ft.
lbs. (542 NM).
2.10.4.13. Position the two oiler rings (22) in pedestal (17) so that the shaft will
pass through them when the rotor assemble is installed.
2.10.5.2.Lubricate bearing cap O-ring (52) and place in grove in the bearing cap
(14). Install the bearing cap with the drain port down on the pedestal
with three hex head capscrews (60) and torque to 104 ft. lbs. (141 NM).
2.10.5.3.Replace jackscrews with three 1/2" eyebolts (P/N 060055411) into the
holes in periphery of the rotor cover. Lift the rotor assembly by the
eyebolts, and carefully slide the assembly into the pedestal. BE SURE
THAT:
C. The eyebolts have a long enough shank so that they will clear
the rotor housing (31) after the rotor (3) and shaft (5) are in
place.
2.10.6.1.For proper bearing and seal location, dimension "B" (as shown in Figure
2.10.6) must be controlled. Use the shimming bar (P/N 060580635) and
a depth micrometer to measure the bearing & seal location. This
measurement is then subtracted from the number stamped on the
measuring bar. This will give you dimension "B". Refer to the shim
chart (figure 2.10.6) to find the box in which the measured value "B"
falls. (This shims chart is based on shims .015" thick, actual thickness
may vary.)

2.10.6.2.Tilt the pump from its vertical position to a horizontal position. Remove
the capscrews (60) and bearing cap (14), Install the required number of
shims (38) as shown in assembly drawings (Figure 2.4).
2.10.6.3.Replace the bearing cap (14) and the three capscrews (60) and torque
to 104 ft. lbs. Be sure the o-ring (52) is in place.
2.10.6.5.Place a dial indicator on the rotor cover seat (see Figure 2.10.6) and
rotate the assembly by hand. The runout of the seat must be within
.001" (.025 mm) T.I.R.
2.10.6.6.Return pump to horizontal position and install shaft sleeve (28). Put the
bearing cap slinger (27) in place and install a new self-locking nut (46).
Torque to 175 ft. lbs.
2.10.7. Completion.
2.11.1. Preparation. Drain rotor (3) by removing rotor cover drain plug (8). Remove
bearings per section 2.10.1 through 2.10.3.
2.11.2.1.Remove the six socket head capscrews (7) which secure the rotor (3) to
the driveshaft (5).
RO/ROH 3x2 27
2.11.2.2.Mark the driveshaft (5) and the rotor (3) so that they may be
reassembled with the same relative positions for balance
considerations. Thread two capscrews evenly into the two tapped
jackscrew holes in the driveshaft flange until the driveshaft is released
from the rotor.
2.11.3. Hydrostatic pressure test. Pressure test, if desired, can be performed per section
4.0.
Heat the driveshaft bore (1) in the rotor (3) to 140 - 160 degrees F. Check the
temperature with a heat stick. Insert the driveshaft (5) aligning the before-
disassembly alignment marks and driveshaft flange holes with the holes in
the rotor. Install the six socket head capscrews (7). Do not tighten the
screws until the driveshaft and the rotor have reached the same temperature,
then torque to 100 ft. lbs.
2.11.6. Balancing. If rotor has been removed or any rotating components, i.e. shaft, rotor,
or rotor cover replaced; rotor assembly must be balanced in accordance with section
5.0.
2.11.7. Completion. Complete assembly per sections 2.10.5 through 2.10.7. Install rotor
cover drain plug (8) and torque to 13 ft. lbs.
3.1.2.2. Apply a bearing puller under the drive end oil slinger (20). Remove the
radial bearing (13), the matched pair of bearing spacers (23), thrust
bearing (12) and the oil slinger (20).
3.1.2.3. Place the drive end oil slinger (20) on the shaft as shown in assembly
drawing (figure 2.5).
3.1.2.4. Heat a new thrust bearing (12) to 150-175 degrees F. Again, check the
temperature with a heat stick. Place the bearing on the shaft with the
wide shoulder of the inner race against the oil slinger.
RO/ROH 3x2 28
3.1.2.5. Install the inner spacer of the matched pair of bearing spacers (23).
3.1.2.6. Heat the inner race of a new roller bearing (13B) to 150-175 degrees F
and place it on the shaft against the inner bearing spacer.
3.1.2.7. Install the outer race of the roller bearing (13B) in the pedestal (17) bore
against the bearing cap (14). Place the outer spacer of the matched
pair of bearing spacers (23) on the outer race of the roller bearing (13B).
3.1.2.8. Position the two oiler rings (22) in the pedestal (17) so that the shaft will
pass through them when the rotor assembly is installed.
3.1.3.1. Repeat section 3.1.2 except replace section 3.1.2.6 with below.
3.1.3.2. Place both spacers of the matched pair of bearing spacers (23) on the
thrust bearing. Heat a new radial bearing (13A) to 150-175 degrees F
and place it on the shaft against the inner bearing spacer with the wide
face of the inner race facing away from the matched pair of bearing
spacers (23).
4.1. Hydrostatic pressure tests can not be performed on assembled pumps because of possible seal
damage. Hydrostatic pressure test, if desired, can be performed on the manifold, rotor and/or
rotor cover.
4.2. Manifold - Hydrostatic test suction to 1-1/2 times the maximum inlet pressure. Test outlet to 1-1/2
times the maximum discharge pressure shown on pump performance curves. Hold test for 10
minutes.
4.3. Rotor and rotor cover. Hydrostatic pressure test to 1-1/2 times the maximum inlet pressure. Hold
test for 10 minutes.
5.1. If rotor has been removed or any rotating components, i.e., shaft, rotor or rotor cover replaced, the
rotor assembly must be dynamically balanced in accordance with section 5.5.
RO/ROH 3x2 29
5.2. Rotor cover installation. Lubricate and install o-ring (6) on the lip of the rotor (3). Lubricate the o-
ring bore in the rotor cover which engages the o-ring. Place the rotor cover on the rotor. Be sure
all holes in the periphery of the rotor cover line up with the tapped holes in the rotor, as the hole
pattern is not symmetrical. Make sure rotor capscrews are installed in same location from which
they were removed. Tighten evenly the sixteen rotor cover capscrews (7) to draw the rotor cover
down. It is important that the rotor cover does not cock, as the o-ring might be damaged. Torque
the capscrews to 100 ft. lbs.
5.3. Completely fill rotor cavity with liquid of required specific gravity. Seal off.
5.5. Two plane dynamic balance using surface A and B shown on figure 2.5. Trim balance to 1/2 of
the out of balance by drilling as indicated on figure 2.5. Balance to within the following limits at
975 to 1000 RPM: Caution: Sufficient guarding should be used when balancing the rotating
assembly.
5.7. Remove rotor cover (3) to prepare for next assembly step. See section 2.9.4.
