Background
With the development of the society, people have more require-
ments on telecommunication services. Besides traditional voice,
TDM and Internet access services, users require more new broad-
band services such as IPTV, VoD, online game, remote education,
remote medicine, video conference and video phone, etc. These
new broadband services help carriers to attract more users and
get generous profits.
FTTH is the target of the access layer network development. The
network solution based on PON topology meets the network topol-
ogy characteristics of the access network. As an optimum trans-
mission medium, optical fiber can provide unlimited bandwidth to
support various services access. The passive ODN device is small
and does not need any active apparatus. It has powerful light-
eningfroof and anti-interference capability. The long distance be-
tween OLT and ONU meets the networking requirement of carriers.
There had been over 12.6 million FTTH subscribers based on PON
technology around the world by the end of 2007, and would be up
to 80 million in the year 2010.
ZXA10 xPON passive optical access network is a comprehensive
optical solution to adapt to various networking scenarios. To meet
the development tendency of telecommunication network from IP
network to NGN network, ZXA10 xPON passive optical access net-
work integrates EPON/GPON, Ethernet and xDSL technologies to
support the access of various services.
ZXA10 C300 passive optical network system is an OLT system
based on GPON/EPON technology. It provides high-bandwidth

Working Principle
This topic includes the following:
 Function Block Diagram
 Service Flow
Service Flow
This topic introduces ZXA10 C300 unicast data service flow, mul-
ticast service flow, TDM service flow and clock signal processing.
Unicast Data The unicast data service includes VoIP, VPN, VoD and HIS services.
Service These services are processed as follows at OLT.
 Upstream
i. ONT data packets are mapped to GEM PORT according to
UNI + VLAN + CoS, or, mapped to GEM port after MAC
address learning.
ii. GEM PORT is mapped to different T-CONT according to ser-
vice type.
iii. With the use of DBA algorithm, OLT sends data packets to
OLT PON card according to T-CONT parameters.
iv. OLT PON card makes VLAN translate on data packets and
configure VLAN work mode.
If VLAN works in 1:1 mode, PON card checks whether it is
required to restrict MAC address quantity. If MAC address
quantity is not limited, PON card transfers data packets
to the main control card. If the address quantity is lim-
ited, PON card performs address learning and then trans-
fers data packets to the main control card.
If VLAN works in N:1 mode, PON card performs address
learning and checks address quantity. If the address quan-
tity exceeds the limit, PON card discards data packets. If
the address quantity does not exceed the limit, PON card
transfers data packets to the main control card.
v. The main control card checks VLAN mode. If VLAN works in
1:1 mode, the main control card finds the destination port
from SVLAN + CVLAN list and transfers data packets to the
destination uplink port. If VLAN works in N:1 mode, the
main control card performs MAC address learning, then,
transfers data packets to the uplink port of the uplink card.
vi. The uplink card does not make any processing on service
data. It only makes optical and electrical conversion, then,
transmits data to the upper-layer network.
 Downstream
i. Data packets are transmitted to the main control card. The
main control card checks VLAN work mode.
If VLAN works in 1:1 mode, the main control card finds
the destination PON card from SVLAN + CVLAN list and
transfers data packets to the destination PON card.

Overview
PON technology is applicable to providing service access in new
residential areas, villas and commercial buildings. It is also ap-
plicable to rebuilding the current transmission systems and base
station transmission system.
ZXA10 GPON system is one of fixed network 3G (F3G) access so-
lutions. Figure 13 shows ZTE F3G access solution.
FTTH
FTTH provides fiber to the home access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment room
or the equipment room in the residential area. It uplinks to the
service network via N*GE and downlinks to ONU via splitters. The
splitter is placed in a fiber cross-connect cabinet in the residential
area’s equipment room or in the building. ONU is placed in the
building or at the subscriber’s home.
Different types of ONU provide different interfaces to support var-
ious access services. ONU is connected to a phone via POTS in-
terface or connected to IAD and family gateway via FE interfaces,
providing video, audio and data services such as Internet access,
IPTV, CATV and VoIP.
FTTH is suitable for new buildings, villas, old building with network
equipment rebuilt. Figure 14 shows FTTH networking.
FTTB
FTTB provides fiber to the building access service. In this sce-
nario, central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equip-
ment room. It uplinks to the service network via N*GE and down-
links to ONU via splitters. The splitter is placed in a fiber cross-con-
nect cabinet in the building or in the basement. Multi floors can
share a splitter which is connected to each floor by using one-level
or two-level splitting. ONU is placed in the fiber cross-connect cab-
inet in the building, the low-voltage shaft or mounted on the wall.
Different types of ONU provide different interfaces to support var-
ious access services. ONU is connected to a phone via POTS in-
terface or connected to IAD and family gateway via FE interfaces,
providing video, audio and data services such as Internet access,
IPTV and VoIP.
Figure 15 shows FTTB networking.
 FTTB+LAN
Figure 17 shows FTTB + LAN networking.
FTTCab
FTTCab provides fiber to the curb access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment room
or the equipment room in the residential area. It uplinks to the
service network via N*GE and downlinks to ONU via splitters.
MDU is placed in the fiber cross-connect cabinet at the curb. The
upstream data is connected to WAN via GPON. The downstream
data is connected to users via twisted pair cable. Each access de-
vice covers 800 to 1000 users. ADSL2+, VDSL2, SHDSL or LAN
access modes are supported. For commercial or information dis-
tricts which ask for more bandwidth, fiber connection is suggested.
Figure 18 shows FTTCab networking.
FTTO
FTTO provides fiber to the office access service. In this scenario,
central office equipment, OLT, is located in central equipment
room. It uplinks to the service network via N*GE and downlinks
to ONU via splitters. ONU is placed on the desk or mounted on
the wall or placed outdoor.
In FTTO scenario, ZXA10 C300 works together with ZXA10
MSAN in networking, supporting various access modes such as
ADSL/ADSL2+, PBX, DDN and E1 dedicated line. The unified
network management system NetNumen N31 is used for man-
agement.
Figure 19 shows FTTO networking.
Video Monitoring
Compare with general telecommunication services, video monitor-
ing service requires more upstream bandwidth. With the advan-
tages in bandwidth, QoS and security, GPON technology provides
better video monitoring service.
Figure 21 shows video monitoring networking based on PON tech-
nology.
Wireless Communication
Base Station Access
In rebuilding 2G base station access node or in establishing 3G
base station access networking, the traditional SDH network has
many disadvantages. By using the IP and TDM core, ZTE GPON
system is capable of providing better TDM and data services.
Figure 22 shows wireless communication base station access net-
working.
Network Optimization
In the current networks, there are still some old transport systems
in use, such as SDH and PDH, which only support narrowband ser-
