FIGURE 2 FUNCTION BLOCK DIAGRAM

ZXA10 C300 uses the backplane to connect all components. The

control and switch card processes service signals, clock signals and
control signals, then, sends them to the destination card. ZXA10
C300 has the following cards:
 Control and switch card
 EPON service interface card
 GPON service interface card
 Ethernet interface card
 TDM interface card (CES)
 PTP Ethernet interface card
 Power card
 Common interface card
The control and switch card contains the system control module,
data switch module, TDM switch module and clock module.
The system contains clock bus, control bus and data bus.
Clock bus: It provides clock to each card.
The system provides two external clock input/output ports for
clock synchronization.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 9

ZXA10 C300 Product Description Manual

Control bus: It provides communication channel for the con-

trol card and service cards, implementing system management
and control.
Data bus: It implements service data interaction.

Service Flow
This topic introduces ZXA10 C300 unicast data service flow, mul-
ticast service flow, TDM service flow and clock signal processing.
Unicast Data The unicast data service includes VoIP, VPN, VoD and HIS services.
Service These services are processed as follows at OLT.
 Upstream
i. ONT data packets are mapped to GEM PORT according to
UNI + VLAN + CoS, or, mapped to GEM port after MAC
address learning.
ii. GEM PORT is mapped to different T-CONT according to ser-
vice type.
iii. With the use of DBA algorithm, OLT sends data packets to
OLT PON card according to T-CONT parameters.
iv. OLT PON card makes VLAN translate on data packets and
configure VLAN work mode.
If VLAN works in 1:1 mode, PON card checks whether it is
required to restrict MAC address quantity. If MAC address
quantity is not limited, PON card transfers data packets
to the main control card. If the address quantity is lim-
ited, PON card performs address learning and then trans-
fers data packets to the main control card.
If VLAN works in N:1 mode, PON card performs address
learning and checks address quantity. If the address quan-
tity exceeds the limit, PON card discards data packets. If
the address quantity does not exceed the limit, PON card
transfers data packets to the main control card.
v. The main control card checks VLAN mode. If VLAN works in
1:1 mode, the main control card finds the destination port
from SVLAN + CVLAN list and transfers data packets to the
destination uplink port. If VLAN works in N:1 mode, the
main control card performs MAC address learning, then,
transfers data packets to the uplink port of the uplink card.
vi. The uplink card does not make any processing on service
data. It only makes optical and electrical conversion, then,
transmits data to the upper-layer network.
 Downstream
i. Data packets are transmitted to the main control card. The
main control card checks VLAN work mode.
If VLAN works in 1:1 mode, the main control card finds
the destination PON card from SVLAN + CVLAN list and
transfers data packets to the destination PON card.

10 Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 1 System Description

If VLAN works in N:1 mode, the main control card queries

MAC address and transfers data packets to the destination
PON card.
ii. PON card judges VLAN work mode.
If VLAN works in 1:1 mode, PON card queries SVLAN +
CVLAN list and makes VLAN translate, then, transmits data
packets to the destination bridge port. After getting a GEM
PORT at the destination bridge port, data packets are trans-
mitted to the destination PON port.
If VLAN works in N:1 mode, PON card gets the MAC address
and VLAN value of data packets. PON card queries the MAC
address. If it is successful, PON card sends data packets
to the destination bridge port and makes VLAN translate.
Then, it gets GEM PORT and transfers data packets to GPON
interface.
iii. Data packets are transmitted to ONT through ODN. ONT
filters unnecessary data packets according to GEM PORT
list. It queries MAC address or GEM PORT and UNI table
to find the destination UNI interface. Then, it makes VLAN
translate and sends data packets to UNI interface.
Multicast Service IGMP is used to control multicast service flow.
Multicast data packets processing flow:
Multicast data packets processing flow is as follows:
1. The uplink card transmits multicast data packets to the main
control card transparently.
2. The main control card uses IGMP Snooping or IGMP Proxy pro-
tocol to process multicast data packets. IGMP adds/deletes
multicast table items, or adds/deletes multicast port. Multi-
cast data packets query the multicast table, then, copy data
packets and transmit them to PON card.
3. The PON card also uses IGMP Snooping or IGMP Proxy protocol
to process multicast data packets. IGMP adds/deletes multi-
cast table items, or adds/deletes multicast port. Multicast data
packets query the multicast table, then, copy data packets and
transmit them to PON port.
4. Multicast data packets are transmitted to ONT in SCB mode.
In GPON system, each PON port has a GEM PORT which is only
in downstream direction. GEM PORT transmits multicast data
packets from OLT to ONT.
5. ONT also uses IGMP Snooping or IGMP Proxy protocol to
process multicast data packets. IGMP adds/deletes multicast
table items. Multicast data packets query the multicast table,
then, copy data packets and translate multicast VLAN to user
VLAN. Finally, multicast data packets are transmitted to users
from UNI interface.
PTP downstream multicast service processing is the same as that
on PON card.
Multicast protocol packets processing flow:
 Upstream protocol packets
If the multicast VLAN is an independent VLAN, protocol packets
are transmitted through a separate GEM PORT. If the multicast
VLAN shares a VLAN with other unicast data, protocol packets
and unicast data are transmitted through the same GEM PORT.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 11

ZXA10 C300 Product Description Manual

 Downstream protocol packets

Downstream IGMP protocol packets are transmitted to all ONTs
through GEM PORT.
TDM Service TDM service includes service traffic processing and clock process-
ing.
Service traffic processing:
 Upstream
i. TDM data stream is encapsulated into data packets accord-
ing to PWE3/MEF/ITU-T standard and added with a time
stamp. Then, Data packets are encapsulated into Ethernet
data packets and added with CVLAN. ONT maps data pack-
ets to relevant GEM PORT according to C-VLAN.
ii. Ethernet data packets are added with SVLAN at PON card
and transmitted to the main control card in 1:1 mode. The
main control card sends Ethernet data packets to TDM pro-
cessing card according to SVLAN + CVLAN in 1:1 mode.
TDM processing card resumes Ethernet data packets to
TDM data stream and maps to E1/T1 interface or E1/T1
time slot of STM–1/4. Finally, TDM data stream is trans-
mitted to TDM line interfa in E1/T1 or STM-1/4 format.
 Downstream
i. TDM data stream is sent to CES processing card from E1/T1
or STM-1/4 interface. CES card encapsulates TDM data
stream into data packets according to PWE3/MEF/ITU-T
standard and adds a time stamp. Then, CES card encap-
sulates data packets into Ethernet data packets and adds
CVLAN + SVLAN, then, sends the data packets to the main
card.
ii. The main control card sends Ethernet data packets to GPON
card in 1:1 mode according to SVLAN + CVLAN.
iii. GPON card bridges data packets to the relevant GEM PORT
in 1:1 mode and sends to PON port after peeling off SVLAN.
ONT finds CES resumption processing module according to
CVLAN. CES resumption processing module resumes Eth-
ernet data packets to TDM data stream and sends it to
E1/T1/E3/T3 interface
Clock processing:
GPON system supports two TDM data stream clock resumption
modes:
 Adaptive
If the public reference clock does not exist, adaptive clock re-
sumption can be used to synchronize clock. The disadvantage
is that the clock is not so accurate or stable because of loss of
packets or transmission delay.
 Differential
Differential clock resumption is to put the difference of the
transmitting clock and public reference clock into the time
stamp of data packets. Compared to adaptive clock resump-
tion, differential clock resumption provides more stable and
accurate clock. The disadvantage is that it needs a clock link
between CES gateway devices.

Chapter 1 System Description

Clock Signal Clock signal processing flow is as follows:

Processing
1. After converting the network clock to low-speed TTL clock sig-
nal, BITS/HZ clock interface sends the clock signal to the clock
processing module on the main control card.
2. After making phase lock and frequency multiplication process-
ing, the clock processing module sends the clock signal to the
line card which needs the clock.
3. The clock processing module on the line card makes phase lock
and frequency multiplication processing again. Then, it sends
the clock signal to the line interface, ensuring that the line
interface is synchronized with the clock distribution network.
The clock module on Type A control and switch card can run in the
free oscillation, holding and locking modes.
ZXA10 C300 can extract the lock from BITS interface as clock
source. Besides, it can extract clock from service interfaces, such
as E1, T1, STM1 and STM-4.

vices. ZTE GPON system uses passive optical transmission, which

can be used to rebuild the existing networks.
In old networks, DSLAM devices are connected in chain. If one
node is broken, the service of all devices cascaded with the node
will be interrupted. In GPON networking, each DSLAM is connected
to a splitter directly. The upstream bandwidth is increased. In
addition, the network reliability and security is enhanced.
