BSMA-1202 The Contemporary World

Discuss the major ideological claims of advocates of globalism, and express your
point of agreement/disagreement. (5 points each)

1. Globalization is about the liberalization and global integration of markets.

The process of liberalization is the opposite of protectionism. Trade

liberalization occurs when governments decide to return to free trade after earlier
restrictive decisions. Globalization is the result of these liberalizing and
integrating processes. While global integration of markets is the process by which
the market becomes more accessible to the rest of the world. As a result, it
equates to allowing foreign elements to have an impact on India's local business
climate. And for me, I agree on this because global integration has the potential
to lower trade costs, enhance the availability of goods and services, and boost
consumer spending power in member countries. Because trade liberalization
leads to market development, technology sharing, and cross-border investment,
job possibilities tend to improve.

2. Globalization is inevitable and irreversible.

Globalization is inevitable and irreversible because it’s an irreversible and

inevitable process due to growing demands from both developed and developing
countries in every aspect of globalized markets, and various countries' economic
policies have suppressed the motivation for their own economies to move
forward, debunking the theory of globalization as a primarily irreversible
phenomenon. And as for me, I agree on this claim because globalization truly is
inevitable and irreversible. As we all know the world is changing because of the
growing demands from both developed and developing countries. And one of the
examples is the increasing global competition, which drives prices down and
creates a larger variety of choices for consumers. Lowered costs help people in
both developing and already-developed countries live better on less money.
These changes give us benefits for us live more easily.
3. Nobody is in charge of globalization.

“We’re all connected, and nobody is in charge” – Thomas Friedman. This

is a fact since not all leaders can supervise each person in a company or a team.
Which means that a leader could be dependent on what is currently happening to
each member of the team. Furthermore, this means that as continues globalization
is happening to our economy this would make a difference in the economy
whether it is on the positive of negative side. In addition, the fact that globalization
is a constant process which means that we cannot predict or dictate whether this
“globalization will have a positive or negative effect on the economy of a country”.
Moreover, as we can perceive in today’s market and society’s problem like in the
war happening between Russia and Ukraine, we can perceive it as a form of
globalization in the form of power because the war leads to diminishing of raw
materials that are in demand like oil and gas are affected by this so called
“globalization”. And this globalization will always change because of the growing
demands of the people.

4. Globalization benefits everyone.

Globalists talk about the benefits of market liberalization such as rising

global living standards, economic efficiency, individual freedom, and
technological progress. According to a new study examining the benefits of
globalization, everyone benefits, especially those in developed countries.
However, both between and within countries, the gains are unequally distributed.
Globalization really benefit everyone, but we know that developing one are more
likely to be late on the new trend that will help them grow just like the developed
ones. Like our country the Philippines we are a developing country where we
grow but not that easily. The development takes time to adapt unlike the one’s
who adapt it and developed right away. The benefit is there they both benefiting
but in a different way. So, yes, I agree.

5. Globalization furthers the spread of democracy in the world.

Globalization is a difficult and contentious process. It has influenced the

world in numerous ways and brought several nations together. However,
although it has brought countries closer together in some areas, it has also
pushed them apart in others. The political culture of many countries around the
world is one of the most contentious changes it has brought about. Democracy is
often recognized as the finest form of government, according to many scholars
such as David Held. I agree that globalization spread this so-called democracy or
governance in the world. Like us, we are associated or have “good terms” in
other country specifically in China. Where we have a “Joint Statement Between
China and the Philippines on the Framework of Bilateral Cooperation in the
Twenty-First Century", which confirmed that we will establish a long-term and
stable relationship based on good neighborliness, cooperation, mutual trust.
Also, the trading of goods like the raw materials proves that globalization spread
democracy because of the interaction and integration of countries. Even though
we have good relationship in them, problems and issues will always be arisen.
Eventually, the parties will have a stain and can cause a withdraw of alliances or
relationship problem. But despite these challenges or difficulties from each other,
everyone still needs the help of each other’s to survive and thrive. Because as
they say, "No Man Is an Island."
