Topics: Develop an action plan to limit soil erosion

Location: Watershed of Ru de Berneuil (France)
Due date: April 26th, 23.59pm (French time, UTC+2).

Instructions

As an expert in runoff management, you have been contacted by the mayor of the village of
Frocourt (in the North of France, near Beauvais) which is frequently affected by muddy
floods. In this area, muddy floods are triggered by the generation of runoff on croplands,
especially because of the soil surface degradation which leads to soil surface sealing.
You are asked to propose suitable control measures in order to prevent the runoff
generation and concentration, and to limit soil erosion. The proposed control measures
should be based on the ecological engineering concepts and should be relevant regarding
the processes occurring in the area.

The area of interest is displayed in the map attached. Mind that the GIS layers corresponding
to this study area can be downloaded in the GIS exam dataset.

You are also invited to use knowledge from previous modules attended during the semester.

Please provide the mayor:

- A list of 4 control measures that can be used in the area of interest (2 pts / control
measure).
- A plan of action (12 pts):
 This plan of action should be realistic in terms of impacted surfaces, and
economical/technical feasibility (e.g.: converting all croplands into grasslands
is not realistic).
 Explain how the four control measures are complementary from each other in
terms of runoff management (2 pts).
 Explain how the location is selected depending on the control measure (2
pts).
 Discuss the timespan that could be needed to implement the control
measures and to reach the targeted efficiency (2 pts).
 Mention the stakeholders that could be involved or impacted by the control
measures (2 pts).

 Locate the control measures on the provided map1. You are encouraged to
design this map on QGIS2 to provide a map that looks professional (export the
map as an image and import it in the current Word document). You are also
encouraged to use QGIS to calculate practical facts such as area or length
calculation of your suggested control measures (4 pts).

1
You can edit the PDF provided or add forms on the image at the end of this document, do not forget to group
all the forms and the map together for the latter; and create a legend.
2
Check out this video if you plan to create features in QGIS. Mind to use the RGF93 Lambert93 (2154) in case of
creating a new shapefile.
