Vedic Age.
The Varna system was prevalent in the later Vedic age and
is still found in villages where people are not as educated.
In the Varna system:
1. The caste of an individual was
determined by the birth. It depended on
which family the person was born in.
2. Inter Varna marriages were forbidded.
3. The richer and higher classes were
served by the lower classes.
Brahmana
Brahmans were the
educated priests,
and preserved the
sacred texts. They
were learned and
handled ritualistic
ceremonies. They
were also the
teachers or gurus
who imparted
education.
Kshatriya
The Kshatriyas were the
protectors and
administrators of the
land, villages etc. They
were the warriors or
soldiers.
Vaishya
They were the craft
persons, shopkeepers and
merchants and served or
worked for the upper two
classes. They were from the
middle class.
Shudras
They were labourers and the
hard-workers and belonged to
the lowest class. They worked
for and served all the three
upper classes.
