1. Read the following passage carefully :-

A great German named Bismarck, once said that if he had to live a second life in this world and was
told that he could not return as a man, then he would choose to be sent back to the Earth as an ant.
This seems a queer choice. There are so many finer and beautiful creatures in the world than ants.
Dogs, horses, elephants, lions, tigers. You would think it would be better to be one of these animals
than to be an ant; yet Bismarck knew what he was talking about. He was a man who loved order. His
idea of a perfect state was one in which every person worked for the good of the whole community.
This ordered form of life is found amongst ants more than any other kind of living creatures not
excepting man.

A city of ants is a teeming hive where work is unending, as any one will know who has studied even
the common yellow ant of the English fields. The homes of these tiny creatures are underneath small
mounds raised a little above the surrounding fields, and inside the mounds there are chambers and
galleries filled with thousands of hurrying little creatures. The centre of an ant community is the
queen. She alone lays the eggs which will become the whole of the next generation in the ant city,
and as the queen lays her eggs the busy worker ants carry them away to the nursery. There they are
carefully watched over by the nurse ants who as soon as the grubs are hatched out of the eggs, do
everything they can to make them grow. So the grubs flourish, and as soon as they are full grown the
nurse ants carry them to the cocoon chamber where the grubs change into cocoon. Whilst the nurse
ants are looking after the young, sentinel ants are mounting guard to give warning of the approach
of an enemy.

SECTON - A READING (10 marks)

1. Read the following passage carefully :

Man is a social animal. But living in society is not an easy job. How one behaves with an
other, how he approaches another person and how far he is successful in playing his role in the
society indicates his manners. So, broadly speaking, we can define manners to be well established
standard of conduct on the social life.

Man has to live carefully in the society. He should behave in a manner which pleases others.
Manners and etiquettes are key to success. Although they do not cost anything, they bring us
valuable gains. They enhance the pleasure of life. One can win over even the enemy if he presents
good manners.

Nobody is born with good manners. Everyone either learns or acquires them. The best plan to
harness manners and etiquettes is the home which is a miniature society and where the child spends
most of its time. A child tries to stimulate its parents and elders in their behaviour and slowly learns
and acquires certain traits of character that it has learnt at home. It also learns a lot in the company
of his friends at school. In the school, the teacher plays an important role in cultivation of good
manners and etiquettes. Teachers with their ideal behaviour imbibe good manners in the school
student.

Wherever we are, we are judged by the way we speak. Therefore words play an important role in
our day-to-day conversation. How we speak to the younger children and to our olders, reflect our
personality. It is alsway good to use a soft, gentle and pleasant tone. We should always show respect
to others, not only in our words, but our action and gestures should also be submissive to sweeten
our life and add charm to it.

It is not only important to mind our language in our homes with the young and the old, but also in
any social gathering. We should give everybody an equal opportunity to speak and never try to
speak while another person is speaking. It is always good to speak in a low tone and not shout. We
should respect the person who is speaking and not get agitated if one does not agree with us. In the
words of Smith, “ Manners are the shadows of virtues, the momentary display of these qualities
which our fellow creatures love and respect, if we strive to become, what we strive to appear,
manners may often be rendered useful guide to the performance of our duties”.

In a group of people, we should always wait for our turn to speak. And never monopolize the whole
conversation. It is bad to criticize someone in a manner that hurts the person. One must always be
humble in words and gestures. We must always be cautious in our behaviour as we are observed
everywhere. It is good to be courteous to visitors at home or while waiting for a bus in a queue. To
win the hearts of others we should always try to observe small courtesies. As in the words of
Thompson, “ Truth, justice and reasons lose their force and all their lustre, when they are not
accompanied with agreeable manners”.

1 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :

Australia’s platypus is one of the world’s most baffling creatures. It swim like a beaver. Lays eggs
like a lizard but suckles its young, and uses electricity to find its food. It even produces venom.
The fur of female platypus is luxuriously thick with dense, dark-brown guard hairs protecting a fine
silvery-soft undercoat. Her bill looks like a duck’s, but there the resemblance stops. It is soft as
chamois leather and covered with rows of tiny pores that extend to her forehead – more like an
overgrown muzzle than a beak. Stout claws arm all four webbed feet, and on her front feet the
webbing extends beyond the claw tips. A platypus swims with these paddle-like front legs and steers
with its hind legs and tail. When it digs a burrow, its webbing folds underneath towards the wrist,
exposing the foreclaws.

Even today, there are mysteries surrounding the platypus. Naturally secretive, the animals sleep
during the day in narrow, inaccessible tunnels up to 30 metres long in the river bank. Because their
nesting habits are so difficult to study, no one knows how long the grape sized eggs take to hatch,
how often the young suckle, how fast they grow or their age at weaning. Studying the ones in
captivity is no solution, as their survival record is woeful.

Scientists have discovered that the platypus’s bill is covered with rows of electroreceptors –
specialized nerve endings extremely sensitive to miniscule amounts of electricity. “A typical
freshwater stream contains many electrical fields,” explains Physiologist Uwe Proske of Monash
University in Melbourne. The nerve ending in the bill can detect these fields. Providing the platypus
with information about the presence of obstacles in their underwater world. The receptors are
particularly sensitive to rapidly changing fields.
