A. Preliminary Activities

1. Drill
Good Morning kids, (Good Morning Ma’am) (pupils are expected to join in the lesson
before we start our lesson this morning we will drill)

have first a drill and a review.

For the drill, we will play a game. I know that

some of you are familiar with this game. The
game that we are playing today is “Bring Me”.
(Divide the class into 2 groups) I will group you
into two groups, 10 participants in each group.
Then I’ll give you cards with 0-9 digit numbers.

This is the mechanics or criteria of the game. For

each round, each groups should give me the
correct answer to the number problem. The
fastest group that could give me the answer
correctly earn the points and the first group who
could score five points wins the game. Yes, Teacher

Do you understand? None, teacher

Any clarification? Yes, we are

Now let’s start, are you ready?

(Let the pupils engage and have fun in

1. Bring me 12 + 10 playing)
2. Bring me 9 + 8
3. Bring me 14 + 32
4. Bring me 41 + 11
5. Bring me 23 + 40

2. Review
Before we formally start, let’s have a short review
from our previous lesson. Kindly get a one fourth
sheet of paper and write the letter of the correct
answer to the addition problem written on the
chalkboard.

3. Motivation
I will show you a picture and I want you to
observe and analyze it. I’ll give you a glimpse of
the picture. After that, I will ask you about what
you observe in the picture.

The picture is all about cleanliness.

To maintain the cleanliness in our
community and in school. We pupils,
students, people or the citizen living in the

the teachers instruct)
Let’s see whose desks will remain clean up to the
last minute of the class.
(let the pupils check their desk if its clean)

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presenting the Lesson

I will present a problem. We will read it together

and afterwards I will ask some questions
regarding about the problem. Everyone read.

In response to the municipality’s “Clean and

Green” campaign, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
of Barangay Malinis held a tree planting activity.
They planted 1 432 narra seedlings, 3 124
mahogany seedlings and 1 300 ipil-ipil seedlings.
How many seedlings did they plant in all?
(after reading, ask the pupils) The campaign was “Clean and Green”
The Boy Scouts and Girls Scout.
Ask: What was the campaign of the municipality? They plant Narra seedlings, Mahogany,
Who participated in the municipal campaign? and Ipil-Ipil
What did they plant? Narra seedlings 1 432
How many of these seedlings were planted? Mahogany seedlings 3 124
Narra seedlings ___________ Ipil-ipil seedlings 1 300
Mahogany seedlings __________
Ipil-ipil seedlings _____________

(Lead the pupils in analyzing the problem)

(let pupils think and analyze the problem)

In order for us to understand the problem. I will
Illustrate the problem using flats, longs, and ones.
Express the grouping into symbols by writing the
equivalent numbers into expanded form.
Add the numbers in expanded form. Then write
the sum in standard form. For example;

Page |4
Expanded form:

1432 = 1000 + 400 + 30 + 2

3124 = 3000 + 100 + 20 + 4
+ 1300 = 1000 + 300 + 00 + 0
5856 5000 + 800 + 50 + 6 = 5 856

(the pupils listen and response to the

demonstration or discussion)

If you are still confused and puzzling thus,

thinking that the first procedure was hard. I will
present another way of adding numbers. Enable
for you to understand clearly how to add 2- to 3-
digit numbers up to two addends with sums up to
1 000 without regrouping.
I will put the given numbers in the place value
chart before adding them.
Note; you have to emphasize that the numbers
must be written in the appropriate column,
otherwise you will arrive at the wrong answers.
(show the chart to the pupils and the steps in
adding)

Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

1 4 3 2
3 1 2 4
1 3 0 0

Do the steps one at a time.

First: 1 4 3 2
Add the ones. 3 1 2 4
+ 1 3 0 0

Next: 1 4 3 2
Add the tens 3 1 2 4
+ 1 3 0 0
5 6 (the pupils’ response through asking
questions)

Then: 1 4 3 2
Add the hundreds. 3 1 2 4
+ 1 3 0 0
8 5 6

Finally: 1 4 3 2
Add the thousands. 3 1 2 4
+ 1 3 0 0
5 8 5 6
(Assist pupils queries and suggestions)

I will present more examples. To fully understand

the topic by following the steps one at a time.
Remember that the number must be written first
in their appropriate column. (let pupils solve the
example as a practice) (the pupils will solve the problem
individually)

2. Performing the activity (Answer)

1. 5 195
I hope you understand the topic and everything
2. 3 294
that I say. Now, I want you to answer these
3. 4 465
questions.
4. 5 668
(give pupils an individual task)
Write the addends in column form with the digits
properly aligned. Then find the sum. Write your
answers in your notebook.
1 150 + 2 034 + 2 011 =
1 131 + 1 140 + 1 023 =
2 032 + 1 221 + 1 212 = (Pupils answer)
1 213 + 1 331 + 3 124 =

3. Processing the Activity

As a recap to our discussion, I have few

questions if you really mastered our topic.

Page |6
Ask: What steps do we follow in adding numbers? (Answer)
Explain the steps in adding numbers. 1.) 14 687
(the teacher remind pupils to always align the 2.) 8 343
numbers in their proper columns.) 3.) 9 333

4. Reinforcing the Concept

(have an activity to test pupils’ skills and learning)

For our activity today, get a one half sheet of

paper and answer the exercises under Activity 1.
Answer quietly.

- Before adding, write first the numbers

8 447 1 103 3 010
in their proper columns.
1 130 3 210 1 102

digit, add ones first, next add the
5. Summarizing the Lesson tens, then the hundreds, and lastly,
(let the pupils summarize the lesson) the thousands.

I will ask you if you are really listening to our

lesson.
Ask: What should be done first before adding 3-
to 4 digit numbers?
How do we add 3- to 4- digit numbers up to three
addends with sums up to 10 000?
(pupils are expected to answer the given
activity)

6. Applying to New and Other Situations

We already understand and know how to add.

Now as our second activity (Ask the pupils to
read and answer the sheet under Activity 2) read
and answer the LM on the number chart of
enrollment in Gen. Gregorio del Pilar Elementary
