Double pie charts samples

The charts show the top levels of education reached by adults in two countries. The
levels of education reached were different for each country.

In Country A, most adults had at least some schooling✓. Only five percent of the
adult population had not gone to school at all A, and just fifteen percent stopped
studying after primary school B, while thirty percent completed vocational/
technical school C. A very small part of the population, five percent, got university
degrees D.

In Country B, more of the adult population reached higher levels of education than
Country A✓. Five percent had no schooling A. Another five percent did not go
beyond primary school B. Thirty-five percent of the adult population, on the other
hand, stopped studying after secondary school C. Thirty percent studied at
vocational/technical school, and twenty-five percent got university degrees D.

In both countries, most of the adults had at least some education, and many
continued studying after secondary school.

You task:

and underline it.

2. In the second sentence of the first paragraph, underline the comparisons that will

become the main ideas of the body paragraphs.

3. Put a check (✓) next to the main idea in the second paragraph. Mark each
supporting detail with the letter: A, B, C, etc.

4. Put a check (✓) next to the main idea in the third paragraph. Mark each
supporting detail with the letter: A, B, C, etc.

5. Underline the transition words/phrases in the third paragraph.

6 Check grammar and spelling. Correct any errors.

No errors.

7. Find and mark one sentence with a simple sentence (ss), one compound sentence

(cp/s), and one complex sentence (cx/s).

- Simple sentence: Another five percent did not go beyond primary school.

- Compound sentence: In both countries, most of the adults had at least some
education, and many continued studying after secondary school.

comparing-two-charts

Overall, the two pie charts show that smartphones and tablets are used for the
same purposes but to very different extents.

The first pie chart shows how people spend their time on smartphones while the
second pie chart illustrates how time is spent on tablets. For both types of device,
the top use is for games, but the figures differ greatly✓. 57% of the time spent on a
tablet is given to playing games A, while only 35% of the time spent on a
smartphone is used for this B. In contrast, smartphone users spend 29% of their
time on their gadget accessing social networking sites C compared with just 15%
of tablet time spent on the same activity D.

The third most popular use of the tablet is for consuming entertainment ✓,
with users spending 13% of their tablet time watching videos and listening to
music A. Smartphone users, however, dedicate only 8% of their smartphone time
to such entertainment B, preferring instead to spend 20% of their time on their
phone accessing utilities C. These can include maps, weather information and
calculators.

There is a clear difference in the way people are using their smartphones and
tablets. In general, while tablets are being used more for gaming and other forms of
entertainment, smartphones seem to be the preferred option for tasks as well
as communication with the world around us.

Part 3

The two pie charts show us where in the world a British company made its sales
and profits. Overall, the largest market for the British company was the UK, but
the main source of profits was the rest of Europe.

Sales within the UK were the largest segment of sales✓. They accounted for two
fifths (40%) of the total A . However, the proportion of profits from UK sales was
less than this a quarter (25%) of the total B . Sales to the rest of Europe were the
second largest segment of sales, accounting for just over on third (35%) of all
sales.C. However, the profits from sales to the rest of Europe made up half (50%)
of the total profits made by the company ✓. Sales to the USA comprised one fifth
(20%) of the total sales A. This is fifth (20%) of the total profits B. This pattern
was repeated with sales to the rest of world, which accounted for 5% of sales and
an equal proportion of the profits C.

To summaries, the largest market for the British company was the UK, but the
main source of profits was the rest of Europe.

Your task:

1. Find the thesis statement, which is the topic sentence that summarizes the graph,
and underline it.

2. How may body paragraphs does it have?

-> 3

3. Put a check (✓) next to the main idea in the body paragraph. Mark each
supporting detail with the letter: A, B, C, etc.

Find a description of double pie charts and analyze it (in a similar way to
those in part 1, 2 or 3)

The charts detail the proportion of Australian secondary school graduates who
were unemployed, employed or further education in 1980, 1990, and 2000.

The given pie charts detail the proportion of Australian secondary school graduates
who were unemployed, employed or pursuing further education, in 1980, 1990,
and 2000.

Overall, from 1980 to 2000, the proportion of Australian students who were
employed grew, while there was a decline in both the proportion of those pursuing
higher levels of education and those who were unemployed.

In 1980, half of the Australian secondary school leavers chose to continue their
education A. After a 10-year period, this number dropped to only 38% and
remained almost unchanged in 2000 B. Meanwhile, the figures for those who were
unemployment were the smallest, at only 10% in 1980, 12% in 1990, and finally
dropping back down to 8% in 2000 C.

On the other hand, over the years Australia saw an increase in the percentage of
students who received a job after graduation from secondary school, from 40% in
1980 to 55% in 2000, which was the largest figure among all examined categories
A.
