Subject:- Applying for an internship in their Marketing Department.

Respected sir,

I hope that you are doing well. I am Arif Ali and I have completed BBA recently from
BRAC University Dhaka Bangladesh. I was searching for an opportunity to work as an intern and I came to
know that you are hiring fresh graduates in your marketing department. I came across BATs statistical
data of your company which is available on a website and then the share value of BAT is growing at an
exponential rate. As a talented and hardworking intern, I want to work in the marketing department and
I will help your team to achieve the best results.

As I have mentioned earlier I have done BBA and I have sound knowledge of marketing which I have
derived from books, lectures, and daily life. My final project was on Consumer behavior, Promotion, and
Branding and I have learned a lot of things from this project. I was also in the marketing department of
the university for 2 months during summer break last year.

Furthermore, amongst other interns, you expect to handle different challenges with great efficiency. You
need them to be analytical and able to work in a diversified environment and I have both of the qualities.

Lastly, the hiring process will be difficult, so I'm sure the candidates gave me strong competition!
However, I am aware of your company's desire to redesign your Marketing Team. As you have seen in
my resume and cover letter, not only do my background and knowledge match what you want, but my
additional skills as a BAT Marketing officer may be well-suited to help you progress further.

I hope that your internship program will be incomplete without me.

Yours sincerely,

Arif Ali

Question 2 :10 Marks.

You own a tech Startup that provides safety advice and emergency aid for women and you are in talks
with the venture capitalists from China for huge funding.

In this situation what are the three most important cultural dimensions to consider when
communicating with professionals from Chinese culture?

Explain how these dimensions can be addressed and practiced to aid smoother communications
between the two cultures in question?

Answer:-

In the above situation, I will consider these cultural dimensions when communicating with venture
capitalists.

a. INDIVIDUALISM VERSUS COLLECTIVISM (IDV)

As we can see that the individualism score for china is 20 and this shows that they are a highly
collectivist culture where people act in the interests of the group and not themselves so, we have to
present our idea of tech startup which provides safety advice and emergency aid to women in ways
which will show common interest for all of us not for just and individual. We have to make them realize
that our intentions for the welfare of the community and from that investor like them will get a good
amount of profit also.

b. MASCULINITY

A masculine score of China is 66 and that represents that the society of China is success-oriented and
wants to achieve goals at any level. I will ensure to include some statistical data and facts in my
presentation to make them realize that they are not wasting their time while listening to me. This will
increase their trust in me and they will invest in my business because with good persuasive skills you also
need to have some statistical data in your presentation.

c. LONG TERM ORIENTATION

As we know very well that Chinese people are long-term oriented and they score 87 in this cultural
dimension. They prefer to invest in long-term projects with maximum profit and minimum loss. I will
address them with our long-term goals and give them a brief presentation on the road map of my
company. I will assure them to inform them with each and every step we will take in the betterment of
the company and I will assure them to pay back money if due to my personal wrong decision they lose
money.

Question 3
Question a: How do you think leaders from Telenor-Norway and Grameenphone-Bangladesh address
the difference in Power Distance between two countries while communicating in physical meetings?
(in your discussion, define power distance and then go on to explain what the question is asking for)

Answer:-

Power Distance is a term that describes how people of a particular culture view power relations -
high/low relationships - between people, including the extent to which weak people accept that power is
shared equally.

Cultures that reflect high power distance are very different from official statistics and generally accept
unequal power distribution, while individuals in countries with lower power distance may question
authority and expect to participate in decisions that affect them.

Power distance in Bangladesh is very high at 80 while in Norway it is 31. This indicates that in Norway
people work freely and in favor of equal power distribution. Power is different and managers rely on the
experience of their team members. Control is unpleasant and attitudes toward managers are
unorganized and word-based. Communication is straightforward, participatory, and consistent.

The leaders from Grameenphone are familiar with the high power distance in Bangladesh but the
leaders of Telenor Norway are not familiar with the situation. They will discuss the issue in the physical
meeting to reduce power distance in the working environment because this will increase goodwill
between employees and high officials of both companies in Bangladesh. Both leaders can follow these
steps to minimize power distance in physical meeting

1. Leaders from companies can create an open forum to receive feedback, and give equal chance to
everyone to participate.

2. Develop collaborative systems through networks of working groups that drive a higher level of
collaboration.

3. They can encourage their employees and create open channels.
