You can find out yourself!
This booklet can be used by parents, teachers and anyone who is interested in knowing and improving
basic learning levels of their children.
Once the report card is made, you can use the results to discuss what to do and planned how to help children learn.
This booklet contains formats for children in Std I-V. If you want to test children in higher classes then you can use similar
recordings sheets and formats.
These are the tools used in the ASER survey across the country. Such tools are available in all major Indian languages.ASER READING TEST SAMPLE

Note: Use this format to make a report card for each class or see the grand total of all classes. You can make one or more
such sheets for each school.Look at the Std II children. Only 4 can read words and 5 can recognize numbers. We must ensure that by the time children finish Std II
they can at least read simple sentences (para) and be confident about numbers till 100. This will ensure that they can make good
progressin subsequent grades.
Look at the Std V numbers for reading and aS
math. Take the example of reading Total Total 2] 8

Now if you look at children in Std III, lV and V together, you will see that overall we have 5 children who are either able to read
letters or not at all, another 5 who can read words but not more, and 8 children who can read "paras". These children can be
grouped into 3 separate groups and taught accordingly.
With these children we need to start from where they are. Use appropriate methods and materials to help them progress to the
next stage and then to the next one. Trying to teach them grade level content or from the textbook of their class is not useful
because they can not read as yet. Until children do not have basic skills of reading and arithmetic, they cannot progress. One way
to teach these children is to group them by levels instead of by grades.Identify @ group of children in a school or in the
community. (They can be children from Std3,4and5.)
