Biblical Exegesis
The Order of Augustinian Recollects (O.A.R.), whose
members are known as Augustinian Recollects, is a
mendicant Catholic religious order of friars and nuns.
It is a reformist offshoot from the Augustinian hermit
friars and follows the same Rule of St. Augustine.
A religious order is a group of men (women) who
dedicate themselves in the service to God, to the
church and to the people. The Order is made up of
religious priests and religious brothers; all of them
live their vocation by living a fraternal life in
community and sharing a mission to fulfill.
CHARISM
A religious order has its own “charisms” or
trademarks which makes their group distinct to other
congregations.

through search for truth in prayers and introspection
towards “life under the shelter of God, life with God,
life received from God, the very life himself”
Live a life animated by prayer and immerse actively
and holistically in different spiritual and liturgical

by building friendship and solidarity “as children of
God and brethren of Christ”
Apply the Augustinian meaning and implications of
friendship and communion in community life

Share the joy of the Gospel “for all people to have God
with us” especially “to the weakest members” and
show care for the environment.
Imbibe the joy of the Gospel and express it in
apostolic activities through community service, care
of environment, interfaith and intercultural dialogue
and other sustainable initiatives
4. Marian
Emulate Mary as model of faith, humility and
obedience and “as a sign of sure hope and of comfort
for the people of God on their journey.”

Virgin Mary through Marian devotional and liturgical
activities

Lesson 1: Biblical Exegesis
The Scriptures are part and parcel of the Catholic life
and worldview. A committed catholic faithful mark
his week through the celebration of the Eucharist and
Masses always embrace the reading and
proclamation of the Scriptures. Growing up Catholic
therefore includes with devotion the vocabulary and
intimations of the word of God.
To properly understand the context of message in the
Bible, exegesis serves vital. It is a normal activity that
we practice in everyday living. Whenever we try to
understand something we have heard or read.
The term “exegesis” is from a combination of the
Greek word ‘ex’ – which means “Out of”, of ‘ago’
which means “to lead” and of ‘sis’ which denotes a
process. Exegesis means the process of leading out
the meaning from the text. In a broader sense the
term exegesis can refer to any act of interpretation or
explanation.
Exegesis is in contrast with eisegesis. EISEGESIS ‘eis’
in Greek means ‘into’. Eisegesis means the process of
leading one’s own meaning into the text.
Comparison:
1. Exegesis is critical explanation or interpretation of
a text, especially of Scripture. Eisegesis is an
interpretation, especially of Scripture, that expresses
the interpreter’s own ideas, bias, or the like rather
than the meaning of the text.
2. An exegete is a person skilled in exegesis, an
expounder or textual interpreter, especially of
Scripture. An exegete is like a good friend who listens
to you, makes sure to understand you, and really
considers everything you say. An Eisegete is a person
who places meaning on a text which is not originally
or inherently present in the text. An Eisegete is like
an obnoxious coworker who has selective hearing,
exaggerates everything, talks over you, puts words
into your mouth, and makes himself the hero of every
story.
3. Exegesis means reading and understanding the
Bible the way that the text itself expresses effectively.
Eisegesis is reading and understanding the text the
way the reader understands it.

Bible. Eisegesis is the subjective way of
understanding the text.
Three Kinds of Exegesis
1. Biblical Exegesis (Head, Knowing, Scripture,
Theology, Convictions)
2. Personal Exegesis (Heart, Being, Discipleship,
Counseling)
3. Cultural Exegesis (Hands, Doing, Evangelism,
Mercy and Justice)
The standard here for distinguishing the way that a
person interprets the Bible is NOT whether it is right
or wrong interpretation (as everyone would
naturally think that his interpretation is always right)
but rather whether it is an interpretation that comes
from the text (this is exegesis) or an interpretation
that is placed into the text which the text itself did not
mean (this is eisegesis).
When we do exegesis or understanding the text
meaning, then we are able to respect the Word of God
as it is - HIS WORD. When someone interprets the
Bible in his own way-Eisegesis, however, then we
simply have to respect his interpretation of his own
word which he imposes on the Bible, or as his own
ideas which he defends with his accumulation of
different biblical passages taken out of context to
prove his point.
Three things to be careful interpreters of the Word of
God
1. First, we must admit we need help. Left to
ourselves, and our own unaided human reason, we
cannot understand it fully. We need revelation from
above. Ask the Holy Spirit for Wisdom and
Understanding!
2. Secondly, we need faith in the sovereign goodness
of the Author. This faith not only frees us to go where
the Bible leads us, but it impels us to go where the
Bible leads us.
3. Thirdly, we need to learn how to read with the kind
of care that corresponds to the preciousness of the
Book. It is the Divine Word!
Doing Biblical Exegesis
1. Mark 3:34-35 34

whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and
sister and mother.”
For the Eisegete (“Behold My mother and My
brothers!”) The interpretation of physical meaning

was not meant by the text.
For the Exegete (In this passage, we see clearly the
meaning of ‘brother’, ‘sister’, and ‘mother’ as
referring to ‘whoever does the will of God’.) If we

of relationship here that Jesus himself is indicating is
a spiritual relationship in terms of ‘doing the will of
God’.
