Good day everyone, I am Joheina Cyndril L.

Zacarias and in this video I will be

demonstrating on how to prepare the oresol or
the oral rehydrating solution, but prior to that
let us know first what is oresol and its uses.

Oresol is a solution of glucose-based salt

solution used in oral rehydration therapy. This
product is used to replace fluids and minerals
(such as sodium, potassium) that are lost due to
diarrhea and vomiting.

There are six purposes of this procedure

1. To replace the loss fluids during
diarrhea or other illnesses that caused rapid
fluid loss
2. To introduce salt back into our body to
prevent further damage from dehydration
3. To introduce sugar into the body to
improve the intestinal absorption of the salt
4. To reduce the need of unscheduled IV
therapy
5. To reduce stool volume
6. To reduce vomiting

The oresol is indicated for the treatment of

dehydration in patients both children and
adults and is contraindicated for patients with
glucose tolerance disorder, acute renal
impairment, ileus, paralysis, and perforation of
intestines.

In preparing the oresol we need a Liter of clean

water to return the water that we’ve loss in our
body. You must always remember to boil the
water first before using it. If the water is
already purified or distilled then you don’t have
to boil it. We also need ½ teaspoon of rock salt
to help our body regain the sodium that we’ve
loss and it also helps maintain the right balance
of electrolyte in our body, 6 teaspoon of sugar
to help the absorption of electrolyte in our
body, and a pitcher where we can mix our
solution.

STEPS
1. Put the 1L of water in the pitcher
2. Add the sugar and the salt
3. Mix it properly, till the sugar and salt
will dissolve
The best way to give oresol is to give every 5 to
10 minutes in a small but frequent manner.

For vomiting, it should be given after resting for

30 minutes to 1 hr. During that span of time, no
food and water should be given.
