How to interpret "Creativity (heaven)"

Heaven signifies the ultimate creative force. This hexagram formed of six unbroken lines
signifies the purest form of power and positive energy. An expression of pure truth and
strength that exceeds all worldly, physical or immediate concerns. A time of profound thought
and conscious creation.

Changes in Line 1
"Hidden Dragon. Do Not Act"
Have patience. There is a time for action and a time for mature patience. Now is a time for a
cautious pause. Time holds answers for those who would wait for them.

Changes in Line 2
"A Dragon Appears in the Field"
Greatness and prominence are different things. One can be great long before one achieves
success. A seriousness and intensity of purpose mark one destined for great things. True
greatness is shown by example.

Changes in Line 3
"Vigilance all Day, Apprehension by Night"
A constant defence of ones principles is needed. Creation requires constant effort and a
wellspring of energy. Be cautious of forces that would lead astray or take advantage of a lapse
in focus.

Changes in Line 4
"The Dragon Soars up from the Depths"
Choices are at hand that will have profound effects on future direction. Remember that
neither choice is right or wrong. They are simply reflections of your true self. Reflect not on the
question, but on the path to which you belong.

Changes in Line 5
"The Dragon Flies through the Skies"

Destiny is a powerful force. All things are drawn to what is within their true nature. Each thing
follows its own kind. Some things are just meant to be, others are not. The great dragon has
achieved its rightful place.

Changes in Line 6

"Great Boundaries are Broken"

In this line we see the great dragon (a powerful and epic force for energy and creation) going
too far. There is a difference between what can be achieved and what should be achieved.
Excesses are referenced here. Some lines should not be crossed.

1
How to interpret "The Receptive"

The Receptive is the hexagram denoting "devotion" and the spirit of the Earth. Fertile ground is
required for creation. The hexagram of "the receptive" often has a strong female meaning, but
can denote a powerful relationship between either a man and a woman, a father and son or
between friends. A conscious act of devotion and a willingness to stand by that person,
principle or force which sustains us, guides us or fills us with energy.

Changes in Line 1
"The Ice is Coming"
Frost is underfoot, but soon there will be ice. Pay attention to problems now, as they are
warnings of even greater problems yet to come. Issues addressed at this early stage will be
much easier to deal with.

Changes in Line 2
"Straightness, Solidity and Greatness"
A strong construction and a stable foundation allow for a powerful structure to be built above.
Directness leads to greatness. Do not take the roundabout path to your goal when the
straightforward approach is necessary.

Changes in Line 3
"For the Greater Good"
There are times to attract attention to oneself, and there are times when the self is less
important than the good of others, or the good of the whole. Success and victory are not
always personal victories. The modest person achieves greatness by supporting his or her
peers.

Changes in Line 4
"The Bound Satchel"
Danger is associated with visibility here. Keep ones thoughts, writings and work under wraps
until the danger passes. A time to keep secrets. Ideas and opinions should often be saved for
the right moment.

Changes in Line 5
"The Yellow Garment"
Yellow symbolizes the earth and that which is authentic. Look beneath the surface to see what
is real. Outward appearances are less important than that which lies beneath. A simple yellow
garment is worn underneath. Modesty, integrity and simplicity will defeat flashy displays and
superficial efforts.

Changes in Line 6
"The Battle of Dragons"
A change in this line represents two dragons fighting. One is real, the other is a false dragon
which will be defeated, but both will suffer injury. This is a battle which has been fought before
-- and will be fought again.

2
How to interpret "Trouble At The Start"

This hexagram indicates progress after a difficult or delayed beginning. New projects or
ambitions should be carefully planned before beginning. Consider the help of close friends or a
trusted associate: their help will guarantee your success in the matter at hand. Storms may
also be indicated here.

Changes in Line 1
"Hesitation and Burdens"
Initial setbacks often throw the weak willed from their course. Stay true to initial goals, but do
not force your way forward if it is blocked. Instead, carefully consider the situation before
advancing. A clear path will eventually present itself.

Changes in Line 2
"Difficulties Pile Up"
Even those who offer good-hearted assistance can sometimes be detrimental to your goals. Be
careful of accepting assistance with strings attached. A clear path will eventually present itself
freely.

Changes in Line 3
"One who hunts without a guide, becomes lost"
A person who enters a strange forest to hunt, without the guide of the forester, will eventually
become lost. A wise person knows when to give up the hunt. Not all things are possible at all
times.

Changes in Line 4
"Strive Towards Union"
Making the effort to assist someone will be beneficial to all. Changes in this line denote a
"coming together" and a giving (or accepting) of generous help. Good things come through the
acceptance of such offers.

Changes in Line 5
"A little does a lot. A lot does little"
There are times when small gestures work better than large sweeping moves. Be conscious of
doing the right thing rather than the thing that is most impressive. A change in this line may
also indicate an inability to express oneself due to the interference of others.

Changes in Line 6
"Tears flow"
A retreat is forced. There is no way to move forward. Tears are represented here. A time has
come to pull back and reconsider the situation. Pain and sadness are indicated.

3
How to interpret "Youthful Inexperience"

Inexperience is a double edged sword. It leads one to make mistakes, but the mistakes are
necessary in order to learn. Do not feign knowledge. Seek out experience and ask what you do
not know. Over time, all gaps in knowlege will be filled.

Changes in Line 1
"Discipline"
Firmness and discipline is vital to development. But remember to remove the shackles of
discipline because too much leads to negative developments.

Changes in Line 2
"Show tolerance to the Fool"
The person who has a strong character exercises patience and resolve in dealing with those
who act rashly and stupidly. Act with inner strength, and extreme tolerance and the issues at
hand will be resolved. When others act emotionally it will fall to you to keep a cool head.

Changes in Line 3
"To Lose Posession of Self"
This line references strength of character and resolve within relationships. One should stay
true to one's commitments and not waiver in the face of materialistic opportunity. An
unfaithful man or woman may be referenced here.

Changes in Line 4
"The Foolish Chains of Ignorance"
Ignorance can bind one as tightly as physical chains. Only through knowledge and experience
can we achieve true freedom. This line suggests that regrets are on the horizon. A lack of
experience causes hardship and mistakes. Sometimes allowing one to make mistakes is the
only way to learn.

Changes in Line 5
"Youthful Inexperience Brings Luck"
Beginners luck reminds the wise that wisdom alone is not the path to achieving one's goals.
Beginners can often make up for their lack of wisdom with enthusiasm and new ideas. A young
person may be surprisingly helpful. Do not be afraid to try new things at this time. A new
approach.

Changes in Line 6
"Transgressions do not Further One"
There comes a time when foolishness must be punished -- or when those who are foolish must
be left to their own misery. Remember though, that one's response should be measured, and
not the result of emotion. To over-react with a loss of control is to be foolish as well.

4
How to interpret "Patience"

The lesson of this hexagram is that good things come to those who wait. Patience requires
both inner strength and a commitment to resist the temptation of acting prematurely. Often
hardships will arise in the course of one's time spent waiting. The message here is that those
who endure these hardships, and "cross great streams" will emerge victorious. Do not be put
off your path at this time.

Changes in Line 1
"Waiting at the Field"
Patience is best exercised from a proper vantage point. Consider placing oneself in a position
from where one can watch approaching events at a distance. Do not alter your daily routine,
because there is much in it that will help you when events move more quickly.

Changes in Line 2
"Waiting by the Sea"
During tests of patience, it is easy to assume the worst. Such assumptions cause undue panic
and grief and reduce one's ability to think clearly and rationally. Remember that with patience
comes perseverance. Do not be swayed by unwarranted fears of failure.

Changes in Line 3
"Waiting in the Marsh"
While waiting for events to happen, it is important to remain ready for action. Changes in this
line represent a warning that things are not "at the ready" and your response may be too slow
when the situation calls for action.

Changes in Line 4
"Waiting by Blood"
Changes in this line are a serious warning that you are not prepared for action that will soon be
required of you. It is foolish to remain trapped in a position of weakness. You must urgently
"climb out of the pit" you are in, and get yourself to a place where you are capable of action
and change.

Changes in Line 5
"Waiting at the Feast"
Your perseverance brings good fortune, but the ultimate achievement still lies ahead. It is
important to rest along the way. Enjoy the good things that life has to offer. You will need the
strength for the challenge that still lies ahead.

Changes in Line 6
"Falling Down. / Visitors Arrive."
There are two messages represented by this changing line: The first is a stern message that a
serious failure is imminent. You stand at the edge of a pit, and it is quite sure that you will fall.
The second message is more unusual: During your fall, "uninvited guests" will arrive. Treat
them all well. For they are part of a larger plan that will help you immeasurably.

5
How to interpret "Conflict"

The message of this hexagram is that even those who go through life with good-will and the
best intentions will at times meet with hostility and powerful opposition. At this time it is
advised that conflict be avoided, for conflict at this time (even if justified) will lead to more
serious setbacks. There are times when a "cautious halt" can be far more powerful than the
most aggressive response.

Changes in Line 1
"Little Gossip... Good Fortune Comes"
During times of opposition and conflict, gossip can often make matters worse. A change in this
line represents a warning to restrain your thoughts on the matter, and allow the seas to
become calmed.

Changes in Line 2
"Return Home"
There are times in which the only way to avoid conflict is to retreat. At this time, since conflict
is to be avoided, it is advised that even a retreat is better than to engage in hostilities. Such
actions will ultimately benefit your entire household and community. There is no shame in a
retreat at this time.

Changes in Line 3
"Danger"
A change in this line is a warning that things are imminently about to become dangerous or
risky. An avoidance of conflict will result in good news. It should be noted however that the
credit for some of your actions will go to another. Do not resist this at this time. Be content
with the good fortune that comes your way.

Changes in Line 4
"Turn Back. Submit to Fate"
Conflict at this time may be especially tempting because victory will be seemingly at hand. A
change in this line represents a special warning that just because something "can" be won,
does not mean that it "should" be. Find peace in perseverance and a change of attitude. Only
through avoidance of conflict can you truly succeed.

Changes in Line 5
"Contend Before Him"
There are times when conflicts must be brought before a third party who will judge the merits
of the case. At this time you should have faith that a third party will judge fairly and (if you are
in the right), this judgement carries "supreme good fortune".

Changes in Line 6
"The Belt is Bestowed"
A change in this line is a warning against the pursuit of a prize at this time. If one enters a
conflict and emerges victorious, he will be given awards and favors. The warning here,
however, is that these awards will be "snatched away", and you will spend all your energy
defending your new position. Misery comes after victory.

6
How to interpret "The Army"

Even with powerful allies and armies, no success is possible if leadership wavers. Good
leadership requires public strength, but more importantly: private discipline. Remember to
treat your allies well, and support the greater good. Success at this time will be the result of
strong interpersonal ties and dedicated personal discipline. To indulge one's ego or one's own
personal ambitions will fail. A unified force will succeed. The importance of clear
communication is also referenced here.

Changes in Line 1
"If the order is bad, luck is bad"
A change in this line is a warning that preparations for conflict may be lacking. Success will be
determined by careful forethought and organization. Remember that "armies must be cast in
the proper order" or they will fail. Is someone out of line?

Changes in Line 2
"In the Center of the Forces"
A change in this line is a reminder that leadership will fail if it is out of touch with day-to-day
events. A leader should be surrounded by his or her forces. There is also an indication here
that success will come in threes.

Changes in Line 3
"The Army in the Wagon"
Group-leadership can be indecisive. A time is at hand where clear vision and direct leadership
are required. The strong leader should be the one commanding the "wagon" and not the
troops.

Changes in Line 4
"The Army Retreats"
When confronted with superior forces, there is no shame in retreat. Only by retreating can one
regroup and try again at a later time.

Changes in Line 5
"Birds in the Field."
The birds in the field represent enemy forces which attack at random. You may find yourself
facing small attacks, here and there. A series of multiple small setbacks which are difficult to
avoid. Experienced leadership is necessary at this time. Age and experience beat youthful
energy.

Changes in Line 6
"The Great Ruler Commands"
Changes in this line depict a great ruler assigning titles and obligations to those who obey him.
Remember that with power comes responsibility. It is your task to make sure those who you
trust are capable of bearing that trust. Look carefully at the character of the people you rely
upon.
How to interpret "Union"

This hexagram represents the binding force, or commitments that exist between two people or
organizations. Through union we become more powerful and yet we must also remember that
to some extent we become less free. Strong commitment and authority is required, but so is a
7
letting go of personal desires for the sake of the greater good. Union is an agreement and a
blessing. It is a force for strength, but it must also be nurtured and protected. A union that is
not defended will eventually shatter.

Changes in Line 1
"Truth is Like a Full Earthen Bowl"
This changing line, at the base of the hexagram references the most basic elements of
relationships. Even when they are simple, they are evenly rounded and strong. A full earthen
bowl is obviously full. It does not hide its contents. Consider basic things before considering
things that are elaborate.

Changes in Line 2
"Perseverance Brings Good Fortune"
Since this changing line is part of the larger hexagram of "Union", it is interpreted as a
perseverance in personal relationships. Those who stand by others will succeed. Those who
move between friends, lovers and associates as if they are disposable will find ruin among
weak friendships and broken partnerships.

Changes in Line 3
"Bound Together with Bad People"
Frequently we find ourselves associating or even in relationships with those who do not have
our best interests at heart. This changing line reminds us that familiarity does not always equal
dependability. We are also reminded that fundamental differences between certain people do
not change.

Changes in Line 4
"Holding Overtly"
There is a point in a relationship in which the solidity of the relationship has become so reliable
and strong that it should be visible openly. Loyalties become stronger when they are visible
and it is visibility that is called for at this time.

Changes in Line 5
"Three Sides Only"
The symbolism here is that three of four possible sides are bound tightly, but a fourth side is
intentionally left open -- meaning that relationships and loyalties must be strong, but also
relaxed. They must remain open to the outside world and fresh possibilities.

Changes in Line 6
"A Union Without a Head"
This changing line at the top of the hexagram is a warning that relationships and loyalties were
entered without prior thoughtfulness. Misfortune awaits. The body has acted without the
mind. Fools rush in.

How to interpret "Wind And Clouds"

This hexagram indicates dark clouds on the horizon. There is still no rain, and the clouds do not
appear to be moving closer because the wind keeps them at bay. The underlying meaning here
is that a weak force is capable of restraining a stronger force. Subtlety is called for here.
8
Negotiation will beat direct force and charm will prove to be stronger than coercion. There is
still time.

Changes in Line 1
"Return to the Path"
As we explore life's possibilities we frequently come across obstacles which cannot be passed.
This changing line at the base of the hexagram reminds us that we are free to return to the
point where we left the path. From there it will be possible to journey smoothly. At this time
good fortune awaits on the more travelled road.

Changes in Line 2
"Join the Return"
An obstacle faced at this time may be avoided by watching the course taken by others. You will
not the first to have arrived at this place, nor will you be the last. Observe the paths taken by
others and along the way you will see options you had not previously considered. Do not force
your way down the current path if it is blocked.

Changes in Line 3
"The Wheels Come Off the Wagon"
This changing line offers a warning against pushing forward against powerful opposition. A
wagon has been pushed to the limits and now it faces destruction as the wheels are torn from
the spokes. The result is tension all around: relationships falter and loyalties are tested. The
outcome looks unfortunate.

Changes in Line 4
"If You are Sincere, There is No Blame"
There are times when one must intervene in the actions of a loved one, a good friend or a
superior. The changes in this line indicate that even though this intervention may cause strife,
in the end there will be no blame if your cause is just.

Changes in Line 5
"Sincere Attachment Brings Rewards"
The synergy between two parties or people is greater than the energy of each individual. This
changing line, near the top of this hexagram, references the additional power that can be
created by a combination of forces. Romance and favorable business partnerships are
referenced here.

Changes in Line 6
"The Rainfall Brings a Time of Rest"
This changing line at the top of the hexagram symbolizes a cloudburst and a release of
tensions. Success has come at last, but with it come new dangers. Be comfortable with modest
gains but do not overextend yourself for more. There is danger in greed and persistance. This
changing line also indicates a female victory.

How to interpret "Steps"

This simple looking hexagram relates to circumstances which might be inherently risky. In most
cases treading in dangerous places is inadvisable. At this time however, there is very little
danger. It is written in the ancient Book of Changes that "One steps on the tail of a tiger at his
or her own risk" -- but the appearance of this hexagram suggests that right now such an act

9
would be ignored (or even seen as playful). A more general reference here could be a mingling
of people belonging to different social backgrounds. This sign is typically positive.

Changes in Line 1
"Conduct as Usual"
A change in this line at the base of this hexagram is an indication that the best course of action
at this time is the course which is most typically followed. While there are unknowns in the
present situation, a familiarity with the "tried and true" looks especially helpful at this time.

Changes in Line 2
"Perseverance of the Solitary Soul"
The path is long and difficult. A change in this line indicates that one who is removed from
daily interaction, and quietly focuses on the task at hand will be successful. Being true to
oneself is indicated here, along with a warning not to be distracted by social pressure.

Changes in Line 3
"A One Eyed Man Still Sees"
This changing line near the middle of the hexagram is a reminder that the capacity to do
something adequately is very different from the capacity to succeed at doing something well. If
we attempt to do something when our abilities are not at their peak, we flirt with disaster at
this time.

Changes in Line 4
"Apprehension and Caution"
When the possibilities of failure exist on all sides, the wise man or woman moves cautiously.
An intense focus is required on events all around oneself, but at the same time an inner focus
is required to control ones' path. Forward motion is the result of careful meditation. Ahead
there is success.

Changes in Line 5
"Determination in the Face of Danger"
The brave individual does not ignore danger, and move forward fearlessly. The brave individual
is intensely aware of the danger and the fear and presses forward despite them. "Character" is
the measure of awareness and action. To ignore danger is to fail. To allow danger to overcome
one is to fail. Awareness is truth.

Changes in Line 6
"Look to Your Conduct"
A change in this line at the top of the hexagram is simply a reminder that the ends do not
justify the means. One's overall conduct throughout a process is extremely important. Victory
is achievable. But a higher level of victory is the one in which the whole process has been
conducted with honor.

How to interpret "Peace"

This powerful hexagram which in its most literal sense means "heaven" supporting the "earth"
is an indication of peace and favorable times. This is a sign of prosperity, plenty and success.
Heaven and the Earth are in spiritual contact at this time, and a harmony exists between them.
Positive energy overwhelms and it is the responsibility of all to use and channel that energy
wisely and for good.
10
Changes in Line 1
"When Grass is Uprooted, Other Plants Follow"
A change in this line at the base of the hexagram of Peace reminds us that forces that affect
one person, also affect surrounding people. Another way of saying this is: "A rising tide lifts all
ships". In times of prosperity, there are many paths to success.

Changes in Line 2
"Tolerate the Uncultured"
In times of prosperity it is important to show tolerance both to those who have not shared in
success, or to those who use their success in uncultured ways. The message in this changing
line is that rubbing shoulders with all types while demeaning no one, is a path to even greater
success and enlightenment.

Changes in Line 3
"All Plains are Followed by Slopes"
This changing line near the middle of the hexagram is a reminder that even in times of
prosperity, one must remember to be conscious of change. All good things come to an end.
What is in one's nature is far more important than the trappings of success, for one's nature
goes with one at all times.

Changes in Line 4
"Not Boasting of Wealth"
This changing line offers a stern warning to those who would advertise their own success.
Those who boast may be reminded harshly that it was luck which made them successful. At
this time immodesty is fraught with peril. The wise person treats all people equally. Such
actions lead to greater successes at this time.

Changes in Line 5
"The King's Daughter is Married"
All happiness, success and celebrations are laced with complimentary issues of loss, sadness
and heartbreak. It is important to remember that all that is celebrated is a matter of good
fortune, and not something to be expected or deserved. One who treats success as if it
"should" happen will be reminded that sometimes it does not.

Changes in Line 6
"The Castle Wall Tumbles to the Moat"
This changing line at the top of the hexagram suggests that a time of peace and prosperity may
be coming to an end. That which was depended upon, is now leaving rapidly. As peace and
prosperity disappear, make note of who and what is truly important. A time of unfortunate
changes is at hand. Security is threatened and that which seemed stable is now imbalanced.

How to interpret "Stagnation"

This ominous hexagram symbolizes heaven and earth out of balance. Creative energies are
flowing the wrong way, and little is accomplished. Ideas and projects stagnate, and enthusiasm
disappears. Those who are not worthy of accomplishment are on the rise. Lesser men and
women dominate the scene. Wise men note that the situation is dangerous and withdraw into
introspection, modesty and meditation. Very little of value can be accomplished at this time.

11
Changes in Line 1
"When Grass is Uprooted, Other Plants Follow"
A change in this line at the base of the hexagram reminds us that forces that affect one person,
also affect surrounding people. In difficult times, many are affected.

Changes in Line 2
"They Suffer and Endure"
A change in this line suggests that the only course of action is to "stick it out". Many will seek
alternate paths, but they are equally dangerous. Those who are both wise and great will give
no outward sign of discomfort or duress. They will walk bravely through this time and await a
change in fortune.

Changes in Line 3
"The Shame is Theirs"
This changing line has an interesting meaning and suggests that one who has risen to power
illegitimately will become shamed. The shame will either be a direct result of their climb to
success, or will come about during their time at the top. Once shamed, lesser people who have
risen to great heights, will quickly fall.

Changes in Line 4
"Act With the Command of the Highest"
This changing line reminds us that the way to move forward from a period of stagnation is to
stick to one's core beliefs and principles. If one acts with the highest of intentions at all times,
one will turn the course of the tide and begin to move forwards again.

Changes in Line 5
"Stagnation Gives Way"
All things must come to pass, and this fortunately true of times of stagnation as well. This
changing line suggests that an individual (a man or a woman) will break the stagnation, and
bring about a period of positive change.

Changes in Line 6
"Motion Resumes"
After a long period of standstill there is new movement. The ice is thawing and new life is
emerging where there was none before. A period of rejoicing as energy returns, creativity
blossoms and relationships flourish.

How to interpret "Fellowship"

A social framework is at issue in this hexagram, which references groups of friends and the ties
that bind them. Trust is important here, but also a willingness to put others before oneself. As
in all fellowships, there is a pecking order -- some are higher and some are lower. When this
order is threatened, the entire fellowship can be threatened as well. Also referenced here is
the concept of those who are inside the fellowship vs. those that are outside.

Changes in Line 1
12
"The Men at the Gate"
A change in this line at the bottom of this hexagram represents the beginning of a new
fellowship. The "men at the gate" represent those who will soon be trusted allies. Secrets and
secret agendas bring misfortune at this time. Openness and friendliness bring success.

Changes in Line 2
"Fellowship within the Fellowship"
This changing line is a warning against creating factions within existing groups. To fracture a
group with separate or distinct interests is to bring bad luck not only on oneself but on the
entire group as a whole.

Changes in Line 3
"Weapons Hidden in the Bushes"
A lack of trust and communication has led some within a fellowship to prepare for the
fellowship's end. Weapons are stashed securely for a dark day in the future when those who
now call themselves friends may turn against one another. The fellowship is in danger.

Changes in Line 4
"Upon the Wall, Attack is Impossible"
Friends and members of your fellowship are worried that the fellowship may have turned
against them. Walls have been erected. Communications breaks down. No attack occurs yet
however. For now the costs of turning against a friend are too high. But the day of conflict
looms on the horizon.

Changes in Line 5
"After Great Conflict, A Meeting"
As time passes, those who were once enemies are becoming friends. Often those things which
seem to be opposite are fundamentally similar, and fit well together. A one time enemy may
re-enter the scene. Do not cling to preconceptions about this person. At this time you may
become friends.

Changes in Line 6
"The Men in the Meadow"
There comes a time when one must exit a fellowship -- or at least to leave them behind for a
time. New bonds will be forged with people from far away. The "Men in the Meadow"
represent new faces who will soon become important. As fellowships break apart, new ones
are created.

How to interpret "Plenty"

This hexagram which is literally read to mean "Fire in the Heavens" symbolizes the life-giving
"Sun". The Sun is the source of all wealth and abundance and references a time of prosperity
and plenty. With abundance comes the power to do great things and to create positive
change. At the same time, the Sun carries a warning not to create waste, or to use this time of
plenty for personal gluttony. An abundance of something is coming your way. Use it wisely.
Also: Early mornings bring success.

13
Changes in Line 1
"Remain Conscious of Difficulty"
A change in this line at the base of the hexagram of Plenty should be read as a reminder: Initial
successes make for a promising start. But do not mistake an initial success for experience and
mastery. Bigger challenges await. Stay vigilant and you may achieve success again down the
road.

Changes in Line 2
"The Wagon is Burdened"
A heavy wagon makes travel difficult and increases the chances of accidents occuring. This
changing line may suggest that someone has drunk too deeply from the cup of success and
become loaded down or prone to mistakes. It may also be an indication that help from others
is required at this time.

Changes in Line 3
"Offered to the Son of Heaven"
A change in this line close to the center of the hexagram is a reminder that thanks should be
made even for things earned with one's own sweat and hard work. Favorable times are
indicated for you. Remember to give back to society and to those in need.

Changes in Line 4
"A Difference Between You and Your Neighbor"
This line represents one who constantly compares himself or herself to peers. The constant
comparison creates feelings of envy which lead to rash actions, mistakes and ill will. Focus on
the tasks before you. Success comes not through comparisons but through focus on the goal.

Changes in Line 5
"Sincerity is Returned"
In times of plenty, material wealth becomes commonplace. Only the value of true sincerity,
presented with honesty and truthfulness, has real value. Approach all situations with sincerity
and success in the matter at hand will follow.

Changes in Line 6
"Assisted by Heaven"
This changing line at the top of this hexagram indicates that a time of plenty will be richly
deserved, not just because of hard work and creativity -- but because the path to riches was
walked with honesty and sincerity. Success in this case will also meet with wide approval from
family, friends and strangers alike.

How to interpret "Modesty And Progress"

This hexagram symbolizes the two concepts of modesty and progress. The suggestion here is
that progress at this time can best be accomplished through a modest approach. Self
promotion or boasting are seen as strong negatives here. Actions will speak far louder than
self-serving words. If something is unknown, ask without shame. Feigning knowledge brings
misfortune.

Changes in Line 1
"Modest about modesty"

14
A changing line at the bottom of this hexagram is a reminder that modesty is not something
that can itself be shown-off, flaunted or boasted about. Modesty rarely receives credit. It exists
for its own sake. With modesty comes a simple strength of character which enables one to
overcome the greatest of obstacles.

Changes in Line 2
"Humility has been recognized"
One cannot promote one's own humility, or brag about one's own modesty -- yet at this time,
modesty has been recognized. It is a moment of good fortune.

Changes in Line 3
"Merit Acknowledged"
This changing line near the center of the hexagram is an indication that merit is being publicly
acknowleged. There is also a warning here against the temptations of fame, popularity and
glamour. Such things are the opposite of modesty and destroy one's ability to see things in
perspective. The acknowledgement of merit is good fortune. To revel in this acknowledgement
is to turn good luck into bad.

Changes in Line 4
"Only That Which is Truly Modest"
While modesty is important it is possible for modesty to mask other motives. A lack of
ambition or laziness often hides behind the mask of "modesty". True modesty is accompanied
by hard work and accurate self perception. One should not deceive oneself by thinking that the
modest take the easy path.

Changes in Line 5
"No Flaunting Wealth"
Changes in this line suggest a flaunting of wealth. One who shames himself or herself with an
obnoxious and distasteful display of money or power. Such actions indicate that one is
incapable of using wealth wisely or productively. The message which was intended as self-
promotion has backfired. Shame and misfortune will follow.

Changes in Line 6
"Modesty and Action"
With modesty, success follows. A change in this top line is an indication that immediate action
must follow. Success breeds greater successes. Wealth must be put to productive use. To lazily
wallow in the success that has come with modesty brings misfortune.

How to interpret "Approval"

This hexagram with only one solid line indicates approval and enthusiastic support for actions
and decisions. One strong line exists among many weaker supporting lines. In matters involving
group decisions, consensus will be reached, and a single point of view will be shared among
many. In personal matters, a choice will be respected, admired or obeyed. Unity is referenced
here. Many act as one, because the one acts with confidence and clear leadership.

Changes in Line 1
"Approval Expressed"

15
Satisfaction should sometimes be kept to oneself. To take pleasure in things such as the
misfortune of others brings misfortune in itself.

Changes in Line 2
"Firm as Stone"
Approval can be used as a form of flattery. One who seeks approval often opens oneself up to
manipulation and negative external forces. A change in this line suggests that a firmness of
resolve will win the day. Be wary of placing too high a value on the approvals of others.
Instead, value inner resolve.

Changes in Line 3
"Approval Sought (Seeking Satisfaction)"
To seek approval while doing nothing to earn it is a fool's errand. Approvals must be earned,
and those who expect something for nothing will be deeply disappointed. Prepare to work for
approvals which are sought.

Changes in Line 4
"Do Not Doubt"
This is the only unbroken line in the hexagram of "Approval". It represents one whose approval
is sought after. A change in this line represents a potential loss of confidence, or a movement
away from this status as the "giver of approvals". The message here is to remain confident.
Your original path is true.

Changes in Line 5
"A Chronic Complaint"
Problems persist and refuse to go away. And yet the problems do not prevent forward action.
Health problems may be referenced here.

Changes in Line 6
"Seeking Wrong Approval"
Seeking pleasure and approval in a place which has no merit will lead one to misfortune. One
has become obsessed with the wrong thing. A reversal of goals or a shifting of priorities is
recommended. The current course is a dead-end because its goal has no merits.

How to interpret "Following"

The act of 'following' is often seen as a lesser state to 'leading'. But leading requires knowledge
and knowledge is gained from following those who are experienced and great. There is no
shame in following one who has knowlege for that is how leadership is perfected. In order to
lead one must know what following is. In order to follow well, one must be focused on
leadership. A weak follower is one who follows without ambition. A weak leader is one who
leads without a knowledge of following.

Changes in Line 1
"The Goal Shifts"
16
A change in this line at the bottom of the "Following" hexagram signifies a shift in that which is
followed. Priorities change and things that were once thought of as desirable often become
less so. As people grow, so too do the things they pursue. An old mentor is left for a new one.
A change of leadership. A shift in ideas.

Changes in Line 2
"Following the Youth"
Sometimes pursuits persist which should have been left behind with maturity and age. If one
pursues goals that are beneath one's maturity, one sacrifices the wisdom and true learning
that could have been gained. Likewise to lead those who are unworthy of being led is to waste
time.

Changes in Line 3
"Following Strength"
A change in this line near the center of the hexagram indicates that wise leadership often leads
higher in the world, and far away from lesser friends and associates. Often there are painful
feelings of separation as one pursues a path that leads away from that which is familiar.

Changes in Line 4
"Perseverance Brings Misfortune"
A change in this line is a complex indicator: Misfortune is forecast as perseverance in a task
leads to difficult times. Yet the task itself appears to be correct and worth attempting. Clarity
comes with failure, and this failure seems essential to success in the future. Persevere anyway,
even though failure looms.

Changes in Line 5
"Sincere Leadership
This changing line near the top of the hexagram of "Following" is a positive indicator, and
suggests that good leadership (which is sincere and truthful) is yielding positive results. A
potential warning here is against leadership which deceives. Such leadership brings
misfortune.

Changes in Line 6
"To the Western Mountain"
A change in this line at the top of this hexagram indicates a complex relationship between
leader and follower. He (or she) who is a great leader will, at special times, turn to work for the
goals of one who follows. When such an occurance happens, the bond between leader and
follower becomes sacred and lasts forever.

How to interpret "Ruin"

Decay and destruction are indicated in this foreboding hexagram which literally means
"Mountain above Wind". The cold winds have decended from the mountain and are
destroying the crops below. What is being destroyed can be saved, but enormous efforts will
be required. Only through dedication and tireless labor will what is cherished be kept safe. A
time of scarcity is indicated. Time must not be wasted. To relax at this time is to ensure failure.

Changes in Line 1
"Absolving the Father"

17
Ruin is being brought about by events that were set in place long ago. In many ways, what is
going wrong now is an old problem. To correct mistakes now one must undo the mistakes of
the past. Only then will those who bear the intitial blame be redeemed.

Changes in Line 2
"Mistakes of the Mother"
Current problems are the result of mistakes made in the past, but care must be taken in their
correction. Blame is counter-productive. What is important is moving forward on the right
foot.

Changes in Line 3
"Mistakes of the Father"
Current prolems are the result of mistakes made in the past. Repentance on the part of those
whose fault it is will come eventually, but they are less important than their correction.
Success is indicated.

Changes in Line 4
"Tolerating Father's Mistakes"
A change in this line near the center of the hexagram is a stern warning against tolerating the
mistakes of the past. If these mistakes are allowed to persist, then misfortune will follow and
blame will fall to he who bears responsibility at the present time.

Changes in Line 5
"Correcting Father's Mistakes"
This line indicates a successful correction of mistakes made in the past. Praise is seen for a task
well done.

Changes in Line 6
"Not Serving Princes or Kings"
A change in this line at the top of the hexagram of "Ruin" is a reminder that one can set
oneself apart from the issues of the current day. If one does cast aside current issues however,
one must work equally hard at serving higher goals. To ignore current issues in a selfish
manner brings misfortune.

How to interpret "Approaching"

This hexagram references the positive concepts of anticipation and expectation. A time of
growing power and energies which have not yet revealed themselves. Diligence and focus
must be at maximal levels because a time of great flourishing is near. The period of late winter
(just prior to the springtime) is also referenced here.

Changes in Line 1
"A Joint Approach"
This changing line at the base of the hexagram of "Approaching" signifies either a distant
approach of two simultaneous events, or the act of approaching a great event with the
18
company of a friend or partner. This event is still far away, but this is a very positive sign and
indicates good fortune.

Changes in Line 2
"A Unified Success"
This changing line (similar to the bottom line of this hexagram) indicates the approach of two
people or things. An event or place may be approached together with the company of a friend
or partner. This event is advantageous to both parties. Or if two events approach, both are
successful.

Changes in Line 3
"Overly Confident Approach"
While things seem to be going well on one hand they are often falling apart on another. It is
important to think broadly. A change in this line near the center of this hexagram suggests that
small successes have bred an overconfidence which now undermines the overall progress. Do
not take things for granted.

Changes in Line 4
"Approaching from Above"
What approaches has been carefully foreseen and predicted. Preparations are well in place for
a successful fulfillment of goals. A change in this line is a favorable indicator which suggests
there will be no negative surprises. What is important has already been accounted for.

Changes in Line 5
"Advancing Wisdom"
There is anticipation towards that which approaches. But anticipation must not give way to
over-eagerness or rash decisions. Wisdom must be sought out and allowed the proper time.
Self-restraint must conquer self-gratification. Do not give in to anticipation. Allow events to
unfold at their own pace.

Changes in Line 6
"The Generous Approach"
A change in the top line of this hexagram is a positive indicator suggesting that honesty and
generosity are at work. What approaches is beneficial to all. This is an extremely positive
indicator. Do not allow selfishness to prevent events from unfolding positively.

How to interpret "Meditation"

The meaning of this hexagram is meditation and contemplation, but the visual significance is
that of a tower with a broad view which enables one to meditate on the wider landscape
rather than immediate events. An additional meaning of this tower is that the tower itself can
be seen for many miles, suggesting "an example" being set for others. This is a time to reflect
carefully on what has gone before, and what is happening now in a broader sense. Decisions
made at this time will be witnessed by many.

Changes in Line 1
"A Juvenile Attitude"

19
This changing line at the base of the hexagram suggests an attitude of youthful idealism
characteristic of one who is young and just starting his path. For a young person this is a sign of
anticipation, change and experimentation. For an older person this is an unfortunate sign of
impending mistakes: Exercise caution.

Changes in Line 2
"Peering From a Doorway"
The limited perspective of a doorway suggests an inability to see the greater picture. Events
have forced one's thinking into a small perspective in which tiny issues appear far larger than
they are. If one breaks away from such limited perspective, the true relative importance of
things will become clear.

Changes in Line 3
"Between Forward and Backward"
This changing line close to the center of this hexagram indicates a place of change and
transition. Steps forward or backward are equally possible here. No judgement is made
between either direction here, and so the answer ultimately comes from meditation and
personal insight.

Changes in Line 4
"Contemplation of the Light"
There are some people who have an unusual ability to perceive the truth and the path to the
truth. Such people will always find their way to the truth. To attempt to place boundaries
around such people will fail. Trust such a person to find their way. They can be relied on for
guidance.

Changes in Line 5
"Contemplation of Life"
This line near the top of the hexagram of meditation is a reminder that through contemplation
comes an awareness of one's role in the greater world. In order for one to achieve one's goals
and ambitions, one must be willing to look in the mirror and be critical.

Changes in Line 6
"Contemplation of All Life"
This line at the top of the hexagram references meditation in the greatest sense: an awareness
of all things, all people and all life. The wisest of people can step back from immediate affairs
and perceive the shape of the greater universe. It is through this understanding that the
ultimate success can be achieved.

How to interpret "Jaws"

This hexagram which is formed of the two powerful trigrams "Fire" and "Thunder" suggests
something that is caught between two powerful forces. When that thing which is caught
between the two forces is "chewed up", a positive union of two powerful forces will occur.
There may be something that stands between you and your goal. It will not vanish by itself --
instead it will take constant and repeated pressure to remove this obstacle. This hexagram
may also symbolize a lawsuit, legal action or legal penalties.

Changes in Line 1
"Feet are Fastened"

20
A change in this line at the bottom of the hexagram reference a mild penalty. A brief restriction
of movement or a time of waiting may be involved. Such inconveniences are important
indicators of what may lie ahead should transgressions continue.

Changes in Line 2
"Delicious and Tender"
When an obstruction is weak, it is easy to become carried away when removing it. Remember
that beneath easy tasks, sometimes lurk much more difficult tasks. Be cautious of "biting off
more than you can chew".

Changes in Line 3
"Difficult to Chew"
The task of removing an obstacle has fallen to someone who may lack sufficient power to be
effective at this time. The problem persists. Failing to remove the problem leads to
embarassment. However the course of action is still valid. Persistance is recommended.

Changes in Line 4
"Arrows of Steel"
The obstacle in your path is resistant to all your efforts. It is proving to be as resilient as it is
annoying. Examine your obstacle more carefully. It has a weakness which you may not have
perceived. When you have seen what you must do, you must use stronger tactics against this
vulnerable place. Persistance is recommended.

Changes in Line 5
"Judgement"
Perseverance against an obstacle yields gold. This changing line may represent a financial
victory or a favorable settlement. One must be cautious here. The difference between success
and failure will ultimately rest with the decisions of someone else. Diplomacy and
perseverance are called for.

Changes in Line 6
"Penalty"
It appears a judgement will not be in your favor. Someone will decide against you. A penalty of
some kind may be coming your way. This line may also represent someone who breaks the law
or who defies the rules. For this person, the result will not be favorable.

How to interpret "Grace"

Like a sacred fire lighting up the night sky, this hexagram is about the beauty of form - the
grace of the material world. When something is pleasing to the eye, it can fuel success and
happiness. This is a favorable time to begin something new, alter one's wardrobe or
redecorate. Adornment brings confidence and freedom. Enjoy the shifting appearances, but
don't over indulge in them or they will distract you from true value.

Changes in Line 1
"Walking on Foot"
Solutions lie in taking responsibility for each step on the path. It is possible to receive help and
guidance from others, but the wise person overlooks the false and heeds only true guidance.
21
Changes in Line 2
"Appearances"
There is no reason to be overly concerned with outer appearances. The deepest content
always starts from within.

Changes in Line 3
"Bettering the Situation"
This line indicates good fortune through persistence. Only a sober attentiveness will bring good
charm to the situation.

Changes in Line 4
"Honoring White Horses"
Here, the white horse symbolizes simplicity. In decision making and problem solving,
remember to keep simplicity in mind and all limitations of space and time will be transcended.

Changes in Line 5
"Seeking the Higher Path"
The wise individual follows the garden path above the weeds of the superficial lowlands. It is
important to take along a gift as you leave for higher ground, but this gift is not of the material
kind. It is unseen. Bringing `nothing' may seem like an error initially, but the greatest gifts and
fortunes cannot be seen.

Changes in Line 6
"Achieving Pure Grace"
This line is a reminder that the current situation is perfect as it is. It is not hidden by ornament
or falsity, so its true power and beauty are available.

How to interpret "Splitting Apart"

Peeling away, implosion and crumbling down are indicated in this serious hexagram. It is not a
time to take new actions or purposely change course. Instead, let change happen through
surrender. When the Earth's energy erupts, all one can do is get out of the way and accept this
force. Stay alert and conscious. The wise person sees this as an opportunity to shed outdated
thoughts, feelings and concerns. Destruction sometimes has value.

Changes in Line 1
"Tolerating Disaster"
This line implies misfortune. If a bed topples over during sleep, all one can do is ride it out.

Changes in Line 2
22
"Avoiding Danger"
The bed frame is crumbling and the solutions have not presented themselves yet. Act if you
can, but you may not have the proper foothold or foundation yet.

Changes in Line 3
"Letting Go of Attachment"
This line implies that stability is apparently lost. But it is not truly gone. Stability is found from
the ground within. Steer clear of others who cause trouble. Detach and try to find new
opportunities.

Changes in Line 4
"Entering Destruction"
Chaos, corruption and destruction can no longer be warded off. Let go of those
things/people/situations that do not serve your good.

Changes in Line 5
"Finding Favor"
This line indicates a successful transformation of obstacles into stepping stones. Dark forces
and people undergo a change and serve to enhance good all around. There will be advantage
in every way.

Changes in Line 6
"Beginning Anew"
Here, the wise person regains successes that were once lost. The destruction has ended and a
wonderful road lies ahead.

How to interpret "The Turning Point"

This welcome hexagram signifies a return to walking the proper path. The light has returned
and cuts through the darkness. Walk with your head held high, knowing there is fruit to bear in
every direction. Like the winter solstice, this is a time of new beginnings and opportunities. It is
a time of true health and clarity.

Changes in Line 1
"Correcting Mistakes"
This line is a reminder to be easy on yourself if you have traveled down the wrong path in the
past. Be forgiving of yourself and step forward knowing you are back on track.

Changes in Line 2
"Receiving Good Fortune"
23
Relax and re-energize yourself. Slow down. Deliberately accept your good. But there is no need
to go forward alone. Surround yourself with helpers.

Changes in Line 3
"Accepting Bad Habits"
Put self-criticism aside if a bad habit momentarily takes center stage for you. Any habit is only
a problem if you judge yourself for it. It is perfectly all right to digress at times. Stay the course
and soon you will find yourself back on track.

Changes in Line 4
"Staying True to Oneself"
Don't stray from your path and your own inner knowing. Walk alone if you must. Let others
follow their own destinies and stay on course for yours.

Changes in Line 5
"Letting go of Remorse"
Forgive yourself for old mistakes. Since you did not consciously choose to make that mistake,
there is no reason to be harsh to yourself for it.

Changes in Line 6
"Seizing Opportunities"
This line is a reminder that misfortune could return if you fail to understand that this is indeed
a powerful turning point. Be willing to start a new with a sturdy resolve. Accept responsibility.
Blaming others will lead to futher failure.

How to interpret "Innocence"

Your innermost nature is innocent, free from blame and always spiritually worthy. Only the
outer persona - the role we play - is subject to blame. Being human, one gets subject to
misfortunes. This is a time to be authentically self-forgiving for all that you think you have
done wrong. Your deepest and most natural self is not to blame. Suffering comes by not
knowing what you are underneath all those layers of personality. Be natural and
unpretentious. This hexagram is a reminder that underneath there is innocence.

Changes in Line 1
"Acting from True Nature"
Acting out of innocence brings good fortune. This means taking "true action." True action is
any action that is in accord with a deep sense of doing no wrong. Don't use too much or too
little effort. Proceed with trust.

24
Changes in Line 2
"Staying Present"
This line is a reminder that every step of the way is its own destination. Put your attention fully
on the task at hand. Results will come, but they are subject to a whole-hearted persistence
with respect to the current step.

Changes in Line 3
"Embracing Problems"
Misfortune can come without rhyme or reason. It is the way of time and earthly life.
Attempting to live completely free of problems is a trap. Learning to embrace and see
problems in a new light is real freedom.

Changes in Line 4
"Honoring your own Knowing"
This line is a reminder to remain true to your inner heart. Don't buy in to rumors. Throw them
away. There will be no loss. Find yourself. You cannot lose what you really are.

Changes in Line 5
"Fighting Leads to Problems"
Don't fight others who speak ill of you. Their opinions won't last. Don't fight problems.
Problems dissolve when they are not fought. Shift your attention into what is already perfect:
your true self.

Changes in Line 6
"Staying Put"
If misfortune comes, don't act at this time. The time is not yet ripe. Slow down and have faith.

become distracted by luxury and leisure. Stay the course with courage and inner discipline.

without apprehension. Honor your strengths to achieve great things.

Changes in Line 1
"Accepting Obstacles"
If your efforts to move forward are blocked, keep your composure. Calmly set your sights right
through all obstacles.

Changes in Line 2
"Blocked Passages"
25
You are at a standstill. Be content with waiting. The wise person fixes their cart while they are
waiting, and thus prepares for inevitable progress.

"Doors Opening"
With reins held steadily, ride upon your steed through the open gateway. But keep your focus
and stay aware of anything that could turn into an obstacle.

strength, not weakness.

leader of leaders.

actions, good books, good teachers and good people.

In this line, the turtle symbolizes wisdom and spiritual openness. Admire these qualities in
others and notice them in yourself. If you ignore them, misfortune could start to crawl into
your life.

Changes in Line 2
"Seeking the Best Nourishment"

not to those who are unmotivated or ungenerous.

sincerity and good intentions. Be humble and you will proceed well.

new part of the Earth. Likewise, the wise person knows there is always light. Do not be afraid
of adversity or death. You have an inner glow that shines eternally. Arouse others with your
own light

about the situation at hand. Watch how others walk, think, behave, breathe, eat. This will help
you discern who is, and who is not, a worthy partner.

Changes in Line 2

others. Be true, firm and loving in yourself and there will be good fortune.

from within. Cheer others on by way of cheering yourself on first. Your attitude toward
yourself determines your attitude toward others

forever. Keep an optimistic outlook and your friendships/partnerships will endure and

supreme good fortune and an indication that your mind, body and soul will be well taken care
of. The caldron is a container for your hopes, dreams and prayers. It is like a spiritual vessel
that stores and then carries your dreams to fruition. Any apparent obstacles in your way will
dissolve or be altered in such a way that they then act to propel your endeavors forward. But
remember that you are what you consume. Good things come from good thoughts and
energies.

powerful jolt to one's life. Expect a new event, person or idea to shake up your world. This
could prove to be a wonderful wake-up call. Although a layer of fear may arise at the onset of
the jolt, overall this is a time when fear will transform into excitement. You will laugh amidst
the chaos. Eyes once closed will now see. Shock brings a return of energy and power. Outer
circumstances will be seen in a new light. New answers and new solutions will appear before
you. Or perhaps they were there all along?

shock and watch how it then becomes your ally. Expect to start anew.

stay frozen, this will prolong current problems. Adaptability and movement are the wise one's
responses to sudden change.

51
How to interpret "Staying Still"

This hexagram suggests finding stillness and peace amidst chaos and motion. The world is
constantly in flux. But this hexagram is asking you to call into question the notion that there
needs to be movement at all. Staying still in one's heart can be the ultimate destination. The
wise person, who has found stillness of mind and heart, will experience no opposition at this
time. This is an opportunity to meditate and gain new awareness. You will soon find that you
are able to take a breather from the noise of your mind and your life. Out of deep inner
stillness comes powerful action.

How to interpret "Gradual Progress"

Like a young sapling slowly reaching toward the sky, this hexagram portends an incremental
process toward new achievements. This is a time to put all your energy and attention directly
on the step you are currently on. Too frequently we focus on the final destination without
focusing on all the fascinating destinations along the way. Let each step be its own adventure
and it's own goal. Now is the time to focus on today. Tomorrow will still come.

Changes in Line 1
"Wild Swan Swimming Toward Shore"

given the opportunity to direct your affection toward someone you previously distanced
yourself from, and so re-create a stronger bond with them. Another indication here is that of
exclusion from a larger circle of friends -- be conscious of your connections with others at this
time. Move forward with integrity and don't form relationships out of convenience or
formality.

Changes in Line 1
"Easing Forward"
This is a time to fade into the woodwork. Don't try to come between another couple or

moving, move. Let your heart be your guide.
