Ngofeen: It was September 2019, and 17-year-old Laetitia Dubois was in her classroom,
anxiously waiting for a guest teacher to show up. That day, Laetitia and her classmates
would find out everything about the big exam they had to take to graduate high school,
the baccalaureate, or as the French say, le bac.
Laetitia: J’ai toujours su qu’à la fin du lycée, je devrais passer le bac. On en parlait souvent
avec mes parents, mes professeurs, et les autres élèves. Tout le monde disait que sans le
bac, on ne pouvait rien faire dans la vie…
Ngofeen: Laetitia felt that her entire life depended on this exam. A lot of French students
feel this way. In France, teenagers have to pick a path in life really young, and there aren’t
a lot of good options to change course afterwards. Laetitia desperately wanted to stay on
what everybody told her was the right path — and that meant passing le bac.
Laetitia: Quand la professeure est arrivée, elle a parlé du bac. D'après elle, nos résultats
au bac allaient définir notre futur et le reste de nos vies. Alors moi, j’avais très peur de
rater mon bac. Je me disais que c’était la honte, que j’allais perdre tous mes copains et que
j'allais être jugée.
Ngofeen: Le bac is a French rite of passage. During their last year of high school, students
take a week’s worth of exams. If they pass, they’re granted their high school degree —
which is also called le bac. But that day, as the guest teacher explained the grading
scheme, Laetitia began to shiver… Her heart pounded in her chest… She was having a
panic attack.
Laetitia: C’était comme si, quand j'entendais parler du bac, mon corps ne pouvait pas
supporter le stress. C’était plus fort que moi. Je suis sortie en pleurs, je suis partie du
lycée et je me suis dit : « Je ne peux pas passer le bac. » C’était un moment très difficile,
mais c’était aussi le début d’une nouvelle vie.

Professeure: Nous allons procéder maintenant à la dictée…
Ngofeen: Laetitia’s anxiety started in elementary school with la dictée, the spelling test.
In France, la dictée is an institution. The teacher reads out a short text, and each student
writes it out and hands in their version to the teacher. No mistakes means a perfect score
of 20 out of 20. But with each mistake, a fraction of a point is subtracted, until the score is
whittled down to zero.
Laetitia: Moi, je n’avais jamais 20 sur 20. À chaque dictée, j’avais la pire note de la classe.
Avoir zéro, c’est humiliant. Mais je n’avais pas zéro, j’avais une note négative ! Moins cinq.
Moins dix… Avoir une note en-dessous de zéro, c’était encore plus humiliant.
Ngofeen: Laetitia tried to hide her negative grades from her classmates. But her teacher
did one dictée a week! And each time, after the test, a student had to go to the blackboard,
le tableau, and write the correct spelling on the board with a piece of chalk, une craie.
One day, it was Laetitia’s turn.
Laetitia: J’avais très peur. Je me suis levée et je suis allée au tableau devant toute la classe.
Et puis j’ai pris une craie et j’ai écrit une première phrase.
Ngofeen: With a shaky hand, Laetitia wrote words on the blackboard. She could feel the
teacher’s disapproving stare. She knew she was making a ton of spelling mistakes, des
fautes d'orthographe… But she didn’t know how to correct them.
Laetitia: Je savais que derrière moi, tous les autres élèves voyaient mes fautes
d’orthographe. Je sentais que tout le monde me jugeait. Mais moi, je ne savais pas
comment corriger mes fautes. C’était horrible.
Ngofeen: After that, Laetitia feared being judged by teachers and other students. In class,
she kept a low profile and avoided her classmates. When her mother drove her to school
in the morning, Laetitia had a knot in her stomach, or as the French say, elle avait la
boule au ventre.
Laetitia: Le matin, sur le chemin de l’école, j’avais la boule au ventre. J’étais stressée. Ma
mère me déposait devant l’école et me disait : « Tout va bien se passer. » Alors j’allais en
cours. Je savais que je devais aller à l’école, comme tout le monde.
Ngofeen: When Laetitia turned 12, there was a new TV show on after school. It was a
show about smart, heroic lawyers helping people in need. Laetitia loved it.
Laetitia: Je me suis dit : « Je veux faire ça comme métier. C’est génial ! » Les avocats se
battaient contre les injustices et aidaient les gens. Dans cette série télé, ça finissait
toujours bien. Moi aussi, je voulais aider les autres. Je me suis dit que je voulais faire
comme eux.
Ngofeen: Laetitia decided that she wanted to grow up to help others, like the lawyers on
TV. She wanted to have a meaningful job. By this point in her life, Laetitia had
internalized that in order to lead a successful, meaningful life, she had to fit into a certain
academic mold. If she wanted to be a lawyer, she had to get un bac général.
Laetitia: En France, dans la plupart des lycées, on passe le bac général. C’est un bac de
culture générale, avec des matières comme le français, l’histoire, la philosophie, les
mathématiques et les sciences naturelles et sociales.
Ngofeen: There were other options. For instance, at 15, Laetitia could choose not to
pursue un bac général and instead, go to a vocational school, une école professionelle,
and pursue un bac pro. A professional bac. This would mean choosing a trade and
studying a more hands-on subject, like how to be a salesperson, a mechanic, an
esthetician, or a baker.
Laetitia: Avec un bac pro, on peut commencer à travailler à 18 ans. Mais à l’école, on
pensait tous que choisir un bac pro, c’était une mauvaise idée. Parfois, les autres élèves se
moquaient de ceux qui étaient en école professionnelle. Ils disaient : « Regardez-les, ils
ne vont pas réussir leur vie ! »
Ngofeen: Laetitia and her classmates had absorbed a common French attitude that going
to a vocational school wasn’t as valuable as traditional French schooling, that it was a
“lesser path.”
Laetitia: Je pensais que les écoles professionnelles, c’était pour les mauvais élèves qui ne
travaillaient pas à l’école. Alors j’essayais de faire de mon mieux à l’école et je me forçais à
aller en cours.
Ngofeen: Year after year, Laetitia received terrible report cards, and then her parents
were summoned to meet with her teachers. Teachers said Laetitia was a slow learner, and
that she was behind. Laetitia’s parents were worried. They saw that something wasn’t
right. They wanted to help and be supportive, but they didn't really know how.
Laetitia: Ma mère me faisait faire des exercices de respiration pour réduire mon stress.
Le soir, avant d’aller dormir, elle me disait de respirer profondément pendant cinq
minutes. Cela m’aidait un peu.
Ngofeen: By 2018, 16-year-old Laetitia was on track to pass un bac général. High school in
France lasts three years: the final year is called la terminale. But to get there, you have to
land an average grade of at least 10 out of 20 for the first two years. If a student fails a
grade, they have to repeat it, redoubler.
Laetitia: La deuxième année de lycée était importante. Si je n’avais pas de bons résultats,
je savais que l’école n’accepterait pas de me laisser passer en terminale. J’aurais deux
options : redoubler ou aller dans une école professionnelle. C’était très stressant.
Ngofeen: During Laetitia’s second year of high school, a Spanish teacher asked students
to introduce themselves…in Spanish. When it was Laetitia’s turn, she clammed up,
couldn't find her words. Her teacher got annoyed and wouldn’t move on to another
student until Laetitia had spoken.
Laetitia: Il y a eu un grand silence. Le temps paraissait tellement long… Et là, j’ai

paniqué. Je tremblais, j’avais chaud, mon cœur battait très vite… J’entendais que les
élèves parlaient derrière moi. Je me sentais jugée, regardée. Ils pensaient sûrement : « Oh
regardez, elle n’y arrive pas ! » J’avais honte et j’ai commencé à pleurer.
Ngofeen: Laetitia tried to keep it in, to get a hold of herself, but she couldn’t. The anxiety
was too strong. She was having a panic attack, une crise d’angoisse.
Laetitia: Finalement, je suis sortie avant la fin du cours, en pleurant. C’était la première
fois que je faisais une crise d’angoisse à l’école.
Ngofeen: After that, Laetitia skipped Spanish classes for months. She just couldn’t bring
herself to go back. Things got worse and worse, even in other classes: the more anxious
Laetitia got, the less she could learn. It was a vicious cycle.
Laetitia: J’avais trop peur de retourner en cours d’espagnol. Quand je devais parler devant
les autres, j’étais paralysée. La nuit, je faisais des cauchemars. Et le matin, l’idée d’aller au
lycée me rendait malade.
Ngofeen: Laetitia’s professors decided she had to be held back. Her worst fear had come
true. She had to repeat the grade.
Laetitia: Je ne pouvais pas passer en terminale, alors j’ai dû redoubler. C’était très difficile
de recommencer à zéro. Mais je voulais essayer de faire de mon mieux et passer en
terminale pour pouvoir passer le bac.
Professeure: Bonjour. Alors aujourd’hui, nous allons parler du bac…
Ngofeen: Shortly after the start of the new school year, the visiting teacher came to
explain the many exams Laetitia and her classmates would have to take to get their high
school diplomas. Within one week, they’d have to write six essays, pass a sports exam and
take two oral exams. Hearing this, Laetitia had another panic attack.
Laetitia: Après ça, c’était très difficile de me lever le matin. J’ai raté beaucoup de cours. Le
bac, pour moi, c’était impossible. Je ne savais pas quoi faire.
Ngofeen: A few months after her second panic attack, Laetitia had missed so many
classes that she was summoned to meet with an academic adviser, une conseillère
d’orientation.
Laetitia: Le jour du rendez-vous, j’attendais dans le couloir. Je pensais que la conseillère

d’orientation allait me répéter ce qu’on m’avait déjà dit mille fois.
Ngofeen: Laetitia thought she was in trouble… But the adviser did something that no
school official had ever done before. She listened to Laetitia.
Laetitia: La conseillère d’orientation m’a posé des questions pour savoir ce qui n’allait pas.
Alors je lui ai tout dit. Quand j’ai fini, elle m’a dit qu’elle ne pouvait pas me laisser comme
ça, que j’étais en train de me détruire. Et puis, elle m’a fait un grand sourire et elle m’a
dit : « Tu sais, tu n’es pas obligée de continuer. Tu as d’autres possibilités. » Quand elle m’a
dit ça, je me suis sentie libérée.
Ngofeen: For the first time, Laetitia felt heard and seen by someone at school. And she
felt like there was a path for her. No one had ever told her that she could leave high
school and still live a meaningful life. Laetitia did not have to fit into the mold.
Laetitia: Comme tout le monde, mes parents m’avaient toujours dit : « Passe le bac
d’abord. » Alors j’avais peur d’annoncer à ma famille que je voulais arrêter l’école. Ils
m’avaient toujours soutenue, mais arrêter l’école, comme ça, au milieu de l’année, ce n’est
pas commun. J’avais peur qu’ils soient déçus.
Ngofeen: Laetitia was trying to muster the courage to talk to her family when her parents
called her into the living room. They sat her down. Her mom said, “We got a letter from
your school.” In that letter, the school reported that Laetitia was at risk of academic
failure.
Laetitia: Mes parents étaient très inquiets. Maintenant, je n’avais plus le choix. Je devais
leur parler. Alors, je leur ai dit que je voulais arrêter l’école.
Ngofeen: Laetitia’s mother tried to be positive and said that there was only one year left.
She believed Laetitia could do it. But her father had a different take.
Laetitia: Mon père m’a dit : « Non, tu as raison. Tous les jours, tu te rends malade. Il faut
que tu arrêtes et que tu trouves quelque chose que tu aimes vraiment. » J’étais très
heureuse d’entendre mon père dire ça. Ça m’a redonné beaucoup de force.
Ngofeen: With her parents’ support, Laetitia worked with the school adviser to find a
better path. She hoped to one day have a job where she could help people. So the adviser
helped her find an internship, un stage, in a community aid project, observing social
workers, des travailleurs sociaux, that helped young people find housing and jobs.
Laetitia: Le premier jour de mon stage, je devais observer et aider les travailleurs sociaux.
On m’a aussi demandé d’aider des jeunes avec leurs recherches d’emploi. J’étais très
nerveuse, mais en fait, j’étais entourée de jeunes qui me ressemblaient… Des personnes
qui étaient un peu perdues, comme moi. À mon tour, je pouvais les écouter et les aider.
Ngofeen: Something clicked into place for Laetitia. Her job was to give guidance to young
people who didn’t fit in with traditional French schooling. Laetitia could relate! She also
met with young migrants who’d just arrived in France and turned to the community aid
project for support. For Laetitia, it was a revelation.
Laetitia: Pendant mon stage, j’ai rencontré un jeune migrant qui arrivait d’Afrique. Son
voyage avait été terrible. Il s’était caché dans un camion et il avait payé des gens pour le
laisser passer. C’est une détresse inimaginable. Je me suis dit : « Si je pouvais l’aider,
même un tout petit peu, eh bien, ce serait extraordinaire. »
Ngofeen: By the end of her 6-week internship, Laetitia decided to do something she never
would have imagined: go back to school. But this time, she wanted to study something
that made sense to her. She wanted to study social work.
Laetitia: J’ai décidé de chercher des écoles dans le secteur social. Ma famille et moi, on a
passé un après-midi à faire des recherches. On regardait seulement les écoles
professionnelles.
Ngofeen: For a long time, Laetitia had felt that choosing a vocational school would be a
lesser path. But after the internship, she decided to keep an open mind. She applied to a
vocational high school specializing in social work, and was called by the school director
for an in-person interview.
Laetitia: Quand je me suis assise en face du directeur de l’école, j’étais stressée. Il a

regardé toutes mes mauvaises notes, et il a dit : « Ces notes, ce n’est pas ça le plus
important. » Il ne m’a pas jugée. Il m’a dit : « On est là pour aider tout le monde à
réussir. »
Ngofeen: Laetitia was admitted to the school, and she was thrilled! But as the first school
day, la rentrée, grew closer, that familiar anxious feeling came back. She wondered if
going back to school was a good idea. Her first class was French. She always found
studying French literature too abstract, abstrait.
Laetitia: La rentrée me faisait peur, surtout le cours de français. J’ai toujours eu de très
mauvaises notes en français. Je n’ai jamais vraiment réussi à comprendre les cours. Par
exemple, les analyses de textes littéraires, c’était trop abstrait pour moi.
Ngofeen: As an assignment, the French teacher asked the students to write about the
person they loved the most. Laetitia chose her mother. For the first time in her life,
Laetitia actually enjoyed completing an assignment. And when the grades came back, she
was in for a huge surprise!
Laetitia: C’était la première note de l’année, et j’ai eu 16, 16 sur 20 ! C’était la meilleure
note de la classe ! J’étais très surprise. J’ai adoré faire cet exercice. Et ça, c'était nouveau
pour moi.
Ngofeen: Laetitia soon found herself looking forward to school. The classes weren’t
abstract, boring, or hard to understand. They felt concrete and useful.
Laetitia: Dans cette école, je trouvais tout intéressant. Tous mes cours avaient un lien
avec ce que je voulais faire dans la vie. Pour la première fois, je me suis dit : « Tout cela a
du sens pour moi. Je sais enfin pourquoi je suis là. »
Ngofeen: When Laetitia received her first school report card, son bulletin scolaire, she
was very proud to show it to her parents. She had even passed with honors, les
félicitations.
Laetitia: On a reçu le bulletin scolaire à la maison et mes parents m’ont dit : « Waouh ! »
Dans mon ancienne école, mon dernier bulletin avait été catastrophique. Et maintenant,
pour la première fois de ma vie, j’avais reçu les félicitations. La différence était
incroyable !
Ngofeen: Today, Laetitia is a very motivated student. She has more self-confidence and
has learned to manage her anxiety. She no longer has panic attacks. Most importantly,
she can finally imagine a future where she gets to do meaningful work. She hopes to
pursue a career as a psychologist or a special ed teacher, une éducatrice spécialisée.
Laetitia: J’aimerais bien devenir éducatrice spécialisée ou reprendre des études de

psychologie à l’université. Mais surtout, je ne veux plus faire de crises d’angoisse, et je
veux aider les gens dans des situations difficiles. J’ai très envie de réussir. J’ai enfin trouvé
un sens à ma vie.
Ngofeen: Laetitia has one more year of vocational school left to complete. After that, she
plans to continue her academic studies. She is determined to debunk misconceptions
about vocational schools.
