 THE SPHEREVIEW STORY

THE BIRTH OF A NEW BIBLICAL EXPERIENCE
In July 2011, I was assisting Darlene Cunningham
(co-founder of Youth With A Mission) in leading a
“YWAM DNA Infusion” Seminar at our University
of the Nations Campus in Kona, Hawaii. Towards
the end of a morning session, someone passed
on the message to me, “The books have
arrived!” With eagerness I tore open the first
box revealing the inaugural print edition of
the SourceView Bible. I was elated. Several
thousand hours spread over many years had
culminated in this innovative format which
enables the reader to experience the drama
of God’s story with new eyes. To the left of the
Biblical text on each page were notations to
help the reader see who is speaking at any given
point. And the text itself was printed in four
colors: black for the narrator, red for God, green
for the lead character in any given book, and blue
for the supporting cast. One friend when he first
saw it, exclaimed, “The Word became fresh and
dwelt among us.”
People joined me in prayers of thanksgiving
and dedication. It was a day to celebrate. A
few hours later I was alone and talking to the
Lord. I said to him in prayer, “Well, now that that
project is done I can start writing my book on
the spheres of society and the discipling of
nations.” For years I had been not only studying
this subject, but had taught on it frequently
around the world. There were not many books on
the subject so I was eager to add mine to the
small but growing repertoire of literature on
this vital subject. I had reams of study notes,
outlines, and concepts already drafted and was
ready to go.

I had been in conversation about this with the
Lord for some time, so I was surprised when I
heard his voice clearly speak within me, saying,
“David, not now. It’s not yet time for you to write
your book on the spheres. Instead I want you to
help people read my book on the spheres. Then
many people – including you – will be able to
write various books on the spheres.” Of all the
times I have sensed God communicating to me
this is one of clearest encounters I had ever had.
I had just finished years on a Bible project, and
had been looking forward to do something else
with my life – and then God’s communication
with me changed all my priorities. Having
just celebrated the culmination of a long and
challenging Bible project a few hours earlier, I
set my face to plunge into a new one. After all,
his words made perfect sense to me. Whose
book would you rather read: mine or God’s? His
Book is obviously the better choice, for in it we
discover – as Simon Peter said to Jesus – “the
words that give eternal life” (John 6:68).
Well, I dug into the study and made a lot of
headway in my research. A year later at a YWAM
leadership event in Harpenden, England I was
ready to share my first prototype. I had produced

a beta trial. And it flopped. The Biblical material
and insights were great but the presentation
of the text left a lot to be desired. I encouraged
myself by telling myself that this is why we do
trials: to discover what does and does not work.
So it was back to the drawing board. Where had
I gone wrong? Then it hit me, I was trying to
“put new wine into old wineskins” – I was trying
to put multi-dimensional, data-rich insights
into the static, flat pages of a traditional
print format and it just wasn’t fitting. As I
wrestled with the challenges, the Lord helped
me undergo a paradigm shift. The Biblical text
had always been experienced as an analog
communication tool – even when being read
on digital screens. I realized that the colors and
notations I had been using were not just text
features. They were actually frameworks for a
whole new data base structure whereby we
could experience the rich, multi-dimensional
insights that are intrinsically woven into the
Word by God’s Spirit but which have not been
apprehensible until now. The power of today’s
digital tools can be used to open fresh vistas
into ancient truths – if we will take the time
to observe and document carefully. Thus I came
to understand that a new door was opening
for a revolutionary approach to experience –
understand and apply – God’s Word.
The latter part of 2012 I started preparing for
this shift. How would we do the research? How
would we collect and present the data? What
new methodologies and approaches would we
need to embrace? As I wrestled with these
and many similar questions I found myself
teaching in a Slingshot event led by Judy Orred
in Muizenberg, South Africa. With this group of
eager young followers of Jesus I again trialled
some of these new dynamics as I had been
doing everywhere I went. The environment
was electric with excitement. One of the
young leaders, Nathaniel Baldock, met me for
conversation afterwards and I challenged him
to consider helping me create this new tool.
Nathaniel prayed about it and said he was in. I
figured it would take the two of us six months
to get it ready for release.
Wow, was I wrong! Instead of two of us taking
six months, it would involve the work of more
than 200 people from nearly 50 countries over
the next three and a half years to compile and
vet all the data needed for the release of the
SourceView Bible app. From the launch of the
SourceView efforts more than a decade earlier
until now, well over 40,000 hours of research
have been invested resulting in over 16 million
observational data points tagged to the
Word of God. Every single word in Scripture has
myriads of pieces of annotated information.
Nothing like this has ever happened before.
It opens up a whole new day of discovery of the
riches of God’s Word. The resultant innovations
occurred not only in areas of Biblical research,
but also in technological approaches. In March
of 2015 while attending the UofN leadership
meetings in Amsterdam, I learned of a data
specialist named Ulrik from Denmark. By this
time we had compiled mounds of research, but
did not have a data system which could manage
all of our discoveries. Some of our research was
in text documents, other parts were recorded in
spreadsheets or captured in PDF files. I had kept
compiling the research trusting that God would
bring about the needed technology. Well, when
I first chatted with Ulrik by Skype our hearts
were instantly linked together and within 36
hours I was in route to his home in northern
Denmark. He had spent years developing a
new data base system that was ideal for the
SphereView Bible. Once again we saw God’s hand
leading in extraordinary ways. My heart is full of
gratitude towards God and the many who have
joined me in making this journey of discovery
possible.

 Foundations
Everyone builds their lives on presuppositions,
whether they do so intentionally or not. Our
presuppositions create a framework for life,
defining our understanding of reality. These
combined presuppositions form what is
commonly known as our worldview. However,
how we view the world begins with how we
view God. The first four subtitles below describe
the shared presuppositions of all the Biblical
writers. In YWAM we learned of this Biblical
framework from Francis Schaeffer, founder of
l’Abri. We have added a fifth presupposition,
that which affirms the purpose or mission for
which God has created us. This grows out of
our conviction that God is a missionary God,
his Son is a missionary Messiah, and his Spirit
is a missionary Advocate, and his Word is a
missionary Book.

 Family
God is the one who had the original idea of
family. He instituted marriage at the very
beginning of creation (Gen 2:24) as the life-time
commitment between one man and one
woman. When the original couple expanded
into a family with the birth of their first child
we are told that it was “with the Lord’s help”
(Gen 4:1). His purpose for this sphere is that
life might be multiplied and that a God-given
destiny for every individual may be established.
God wants us to engage with families, to serve
and strengthen them, to see his purposes of
life and destiny restored in them in order to
serve an emerging generation.

Economics includes both science and
technology together with the arena of
business. God’s purpose for the sphere is to
release provision and model stewardship.
Science is the generative motor of this sphere,
for it produces the research and development
that allows for the creation of wealth by
unlocking new products and services. It is then
propelled forward by the distributive capacity
of the business enterprise which produces
and sells those inventions. When stewarded
well, this process of creating and distributing
wealth should glorify the Creator who works
with humans as co- creators in the desire to
multiply life-enhancing innovations.

God has appointed government in order to
safeguard justice and create a peaceful and
safe environment within the nation. Rulers
should exercise delegated authority in order
to serve the citizens whom they govern. The
“Law of the King” found in Deuteronomy 17:14-21
warns those in authority against multiplying
that which would lead them into a life-style of
authoritarianism, hedonism and materialism.
God’s alternative to these three unrighteous
value systems is servanthood, purity and
generosity. But since we are aware that our
civic leaders are often pressed to compromise
in the areas of power, sex and money, we must
pray and work to see every form of injustice,
corruption and greed brought to an end.

God’s purpose for the sphere of religion is
the extension of mercy and the promotion
of reconciliation between those who have
had relationships broken. This is to occur
horizontally between human beings, and
vertically between individuals and God.
Competing religious worldviews contend
for the hearts and minds of men and women
everywhere. Without falling into a contentious
spirit, we are to enter this marketplace of
religious ideas and clearly display why the
gospel of Christ is unique. In fact, the gospel is
the only means of enduring grace, for it alone
makes lasting reconciliation possible through
the sacrificial love displayed on the cross.

God has designed the educational sphere to be
a means of discipleship and multiplication. The
purpose of discipleship is the transformation of
the student rather than the mere transaction
of knowledge. With this perspective education
becomes a means of developing Biblical
Christians who have Jesus as their model and
the Bible as their foundation. True education
should occur in a family-friendly context, for
God has delegated to the family the primary
authority and responsibility for the education
of their children. Every family on earth should
have access to a Christian school for their
children.

communication to do good or to do ill. There is
great power not only in what is said but in how
it is said. Today, with new media technologies
emerging one after another, we have more
and more capacity to communicate than ever
before. But what are we communicating? Is it

This sphere includes all the arts, areas of
entertainment and sports. God’s purposes for
the sphere of celebration is to strengthen hope
and build community. Ever since the days of Jubal
(Gen 4:21), balladeers and artists have used their
skills to entertain people and speak to the heart
of their culture. In the Bible, these artistic gifts
are often identified with the prophetic ministry.
When the ideas of God are embedded in story
form, the truth resonates with both heart and
mind, maximizing the potential impact in the
life of those who are drawn into the story. At
the same time, story has the power to create
identity and community. Stories of God’s work in
the past build hope for the future, giving strength
and courage to face the ever present challenges
of life’s journey.

About a decade ago the Lord spoke to Loren,
“Converge & Convene.” We have observed a rise in
strategic partnerships between YWAM and other
Great Commission Christians in many parts of
the world around many points of passion. Some
of these represent partnerships in the church/
missions arena (like Table 71, the Pacific Wa’a
Partnership, Call2All, and many, many others) as
well as we have begun to form cohorts around
other spheres of society to bring transformation
in those arenas. As we prepare to make godly
impact in our society, here are some questions on
