The texts I will be analyzing today are Shakespeare’s Macbeth more specifically Act1 Scene 3

and 7 along with Netflix’s Suits more specifically Season 3 episode 1 Timestamp: 46:42-
47:28. Over here We can see Harvey Specter the shows protagonist and Edward Darby
making a deal so that Harvey can then resume control over the firm by kicking his mentor
Jessica Pearson out. This is a very important scene because over here we can now see how
Harvey’s intentions over here aren’t for the benefit of the firm but personal. The reason this
is because the audience can assume an internal conflict going on between the character.
One side being loyal to Jessica and the other wanting fair compensation for all the time
money and sacrifices he has made for his firm. The compensation being awarded Name
Partner. He then uses his proposition with Darby to act on his feelings and go on the road to
becoming managing Partner by kicking his mentor and friend Jessica Pearson out. It is this
scene that further enhances the themes of Power and Conflict. Showing how the tiniest
hope for power can make someone completely forget their friends and the people they
trust.

In Macbeth on the other hand when he is told “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king

m
er as
hereafter” we can see him rethinking his entire relationship with King Duncan mainly
because he is now told that he can be king. Which in this case is very similar to being

co
eH w
Managing Partner. This is also where the theme and global issue of Power come in. The
audience can only assume that the conflict Macbeth is going through is very similar to that

o.
rs e
of Harvey’s. Since Macbeth is forced to rethink all of the sacrifices he has made for the king
ou urc
and now wants compensation for the same, which is exactly what Harvey goes through.
Once again further amplifying the conflict.
o

Later in the series Harvey regains his sense of loyalty for Jessica because she awards him
aC s

Name Partner however, that is not the case in Macbeth even though he is awarded the title
v i y re

of the thane of Cawdor his thirst for vengeance and compensation is not complete, so a little
manipulation by Lady Macbeth easily drives Macbeth to murder King Duncan. Further
amplifying the global issue of Conflict. In conclusion both the texts follow a very similar
pattern but have totally different endings hence showing the contrast between the tests
ed d

even though they share the same global issue.
