• Contour Room:

It is a layered room, with two sided light of different

densities. The L-shaped opening increases the amount of illuminance
and liveliness in the space. The transparency of the material in
combination with the amount of light is adding a layer of openness in
the space, which makes the user connect to the outdoor
environment and to enjoy the view of nature.

• Brightness Distribution:
Adaptation between photopic and mesopic vision
st
1. The 1 picture is a photopic vision. This room receives plenty of
light, the luminance contrast between the exterior and the
interior is low, due to large adjacent opening. All the colours
seems to look brighter than the actual hue due to the bright
light. The wooden floor’s tone seems lighter
2. The 2nd picture is a mesopic vision. The floor and the ceiling looks
glossier due to the reflection of artificial lights in the interior.
Cool colours like shades of blue are clearer and are very much
obvious. The wooden floor’s tone seems darker.

• Colour distribution and emotional understanding:

White paint on walls opens up and freshens spaces.
Moreover, white is versatile and sets a mood. White colour on the
walls clearly reflects the light and will make the space look brighter. It
tends to retain a clean look in the space with abundant natural light.
• Contour Room:
It is a layered room, with one sided Natural light. The wise
placement of solid frame, parallel to the bed in the opening to minimize the
amount of light into the space, while the user needs relaxation and rest. The
opening is a sliding door which leads to the balcony. The transparency of the
material and the amount of light in the space, makes the user feel
comfortable and relaxed.

• Brightness distribution:

1. In the 1st picture, the eye adaptation is Photopic. The natural light which
enters into the space via sliding door makes a particular area of the
space brighter than the other. The luminance contrast between the
interior and exterior is high. The floor seems brighter, while the ceiling
remains dark.
2. In the 2nd picture, the eye adaptation is mesopic. The artificial light is
diffused and used to illuminate the interior. However, the ceiling looks
brighter, while the floor looks dark.

• Colour distribution and emotional understanding:

A small splash of color against neutral tones goes a long way
in beautifying a home, and this one is an example of that. With chocolate
brown and half white, and different textures dominating the area, which
gives the space a contemporary, youthful vibe. The diffuse light from the
ceiling also makes the user feel comfortable, fresh and relaxed.
• Contour Room:
It is also a layered room, with a single sided natural light opening.
There is a break in between the opening, which clearly defines the separation of
living room and dining. There is no need of any natural light in the space during
the daytime. The opening makes the user connect to the nature and to virtually
experience the outdoor environment.

• Brightness distribution:

1. The eye adaptation of the first image is photopic vision. The luminance
contrast between the exterior and the interior is low. The light that falls
through the two windows on the floor into the interior reflects directly and
indirectly onto the ceiling. The tone of the wood in the flooring looks
lighter.
2. The eye adaptation of the second image is mesopic vision. The luminance
contrast between the interior and the exterior is low. Cool colours like blue
is clearer. Everything appears in cooler hue. The wooden floor’s tone looks
darker and glossier due the reflection of the artificial light.

• Colour distribution:
White represents purity, goodness, and cleanliness. Too much white
is sometimes associated with sterility. White can be elegant and open up a
space when used in moderation with strategic color-pop accents. This color is
also great for walls in a smaller room that you want to make feel larger.
Moreover, white on walls reflects maximum light.
EYE ADAPTATION - PHOTOPIC VISION • Contour room:
This is a pergola type room of Schultz archetypal
spaces. They are perceived as defined spaces when viewed from
specific standpoint. This pergola room is top lit. The directional
light separated by horizontal vertical elements creates a rhythm.
A feeling of protection arises in the centre of the space. The
space is transitional. Moreover, this structure provides shade,
privacy, and an interest in the space.

• Brightness distribution:
The eye adaptation is Photopic. The luminous contrast
between the interior and the exterior is very low. Different
patterns are created during different times of a day on different
elements within the structure . There is continuation of the stair
which is not visible in the image because of the usage of white
colour for wall, stair and the pergola rods.
• Emotions experienced:
1. Openness • Colour distribution :
2. Minimalistic Painting the wall, stair, pergola rods in white colour
3. Hope makes it all blend together. The user’s eye doesn’t know where
4. Safe to stop, so the space seems much larger, but to break this
5. Purity they’ve used brown colours on footing, and grey colour on
6. Chaos seating. The art installation however remains as a contrast to
the whole space.
EYE ADAPTATION – MESOPIC VISION • Contour Room:
Outside is a pergola space, of Schult’z
archetypal spaces, however the inside remains as a
layered room. The combination of White vertical door
elements and horizontal wooden pergola elements
creates a rhythm. On the sitout, the pergola elements
break the view to the beautiful sky and create the
impression that the interior space runs to the outside.
This makes the interior appear larger. The use of
transparent sliding doors, connects the interior and
exterior, while the user can virtually experience the
outer environment. The walls, floor, and the ceiling is
painted in same colour, which blends it all and makes
the small space appear bigger.

• Brightness distribution:
The eye adaptation is in mesopic range.
The luminous contrast between the interior and

EYE ADAPTATION – SCOTOPIC VISION
• Contour room:
It is a layered room according to
schult’z archetypal rooms. Since, this is during
night time, there is no light through the windows.
The spotlight which is illuminated into the space
through a door makes the furniture and other
elements visible.

• Brightness distribution:
The eye adaptation is scotopic vision.
The luminance contrast between the source and
the space is high. However, the floor seems to be
bright when compared to the ceiling. The amount
of illuminance is clearly not enough for the user
to perform any kind of task. The warm tone of the
light disturbs the user’s eye.
• Colour distribution and emotional understanding:
There are hardly 3 colours that we can see. The warm light
from the source creates a feeling of hope and empowerment to the
user. However, the other areas seems less illuminated, the user might
feel scary, disturbed, sad or depressed. - SOWMYA PRABHAKARAN
