TASK 3 ROOM PERCEPTION WITH LIGHT ASVANTIKA SENTHIVEL FUNDAMENTALS OF LIGHTING . DESIGN 1 7 COMPARISON BETWEEN PHOTOPIC AND MESOPIC PICTURE 1 Contour Space This i sed and layered room (f) and (g) of Schult architectural space. ‘The light falls through the large glass windows on the left and makes the interior appear larger. Light from left side falls into the interior floor and gets reflected directly onto the ceiling. 5 an encl Brightness distribution 1. The eye adaptation level is Photopic vision. The luminance of the room is bright and clear. 2. The eye adaptation level is Mesopic vision. Artificial lighting helps the room to get luminance atleast to an extent. Luminance of the artificial light is less. Colour distribution 1.Contrast of white room with brown flooring is clear and perfect in daytime vision. 2. It appears to be cool with blue tint from window and due to less artificial lights. Floor is dark due to no reflection of light. Emotional understanding Overall impression is that the artificial lighting can be more or the luminance of the lights can be more to avoid darkness during night time. This would make the scene bright. COMPARISON BETWEEN PHOTOPIC AND MESOPIC PICTURE 2 Contour Space an enclosed and layered room (f) and (g) of Schultz architectural sp: Solid space with one sided light from the window. This space gives a feeling of ~ durability and permanence. Artificial light from the lamp and fan gives lighting » tothe room. There is a sharp distinction between indoor and outdoor. The light is diffused through the window. Brightness distribution 1. The eye adaptation level is Photopic vision. The light comes inside from one side of the window and also from the left side of the guitar. Due to this the room luminance is little high. _ 2.The eye adaptation level is Mesopic vision . Artificial lighting helps to make the room bright. Without artificial light luminance of the room is dark. Dark areas associate calm and static. Colour distribution _ 1.Room appears to be warm by Ittens colour contrast. The exposure is more comparatively. _ 2.Walls appear to be green due to artificial light and it creates a contrast with y cool light. Emotional understanding _ The total impression is that the room is calm and static due to less luminance of the room. There could have been bigger window or more lights to make the room brighter. COMPARISON BETWEEN PHOTOPIC AND MESOPIC PICTURE 3 Contour Space This is a contour room (c) of Schultz archetypal spaces. This type of space features certain vulnerability. There is full of glass doors which separates the indoor and outdoor activities. The transparency of the space does not offer ~ privacy for occupants. All activities are visible, especially in the evening where the room becomes the lantern. Brightness distribution 1. The eye adaptation level is Photopic vision. The skylight fills the space and during morning times the interior is little bright compared to evenings. 2.The eye adaptation level is Mesopic vision. Artificial lighting helps to make the room bright and makes the interior brighter than the exterior. Colour distribution 1.Room appears to be warm by Ittens colour contrast. The exposure is more in the exterior. 2.Space appears to be cool by Ittens colour contrast and becomes mild. Interior is more prominent than the exterior. Emotional understanding The overall impresion is that the space is bright crystal clear during day time vision and gives freshness to the surrounding. During evening time the space gets calm and silent and makes the interior prominent. PICTURE FOR PHOTOTOPIC Contour Space This is an net room (d1) of Schultz archetypal spaces. In this the sunlight is fragmented and encloses the space. Sunlight creates shadow patterns on the ground which makes the space exciting. But in this place we cannot be there for a longer period. Pillars and pergola together makes it a net rom. It makes the space little closed by providing climber plants. But during night without light it makes the place scarier. Brightness distribution The eye adaptation level is Phototopic vision. Luminance of the the sky light is reduced by the pillars and the pergola. It gives a warm scene and a protective feel along the pathway. Colour distribution The colours are recognizable. Green colour of the climbers reduce light falling inside and seen as darker shade due to the density of the climber plants. Emotional understanding The total impression is that the pathway gives safety and makes us feel protected and makes the pathway interesting by the patterns falling on the ground. PICTURE FOR MESOPIC Contour Space Outside is a pergola space (d) of Schultz archetypal spaces. Combination of the linear wooden flooring and pergola creates a rhythm. The pergola helps to control the angle of view from outside to inside.This makes the interior appear larger. The light that falls into the interior gets reflected dir ceiling. This creates a soft diffuse light in the interior. tly onto the Brightness distribution ‘The eye adaptation level is Mesopic vision. The artificial lighting in the interior makes the room prominent. But the brown elemnts of pergola and flooring depress the scene. Colour distribution The space is filled with colour scale of brown shade with different hues. Contrast between the sky and brown flooring , pergola, interior etc makes the scene dull. Emotional understanding The total impression is that the interior is bright and warm. The brown elements can be reduced to make the scene brighter and to give life to the pergola space. PICTURE FOR SCOTOPIC Contour Space This is an enclosed and layered room (f) and(g) of Schultz archetypal spaces. This is a room with huge glass door. Artificial lighting from right side of the room provides brightness. In scotopic vision the room appears to be in black and white. The light from right is reflected by the the glass door. Since the furnitures are white it is clear in the dark vision. Brightness distribution The eye adaptation level is Scotopic vision. Only light from right side of the room proves luminance to the roo, which in further gets reflected by the glass door and provide more extra brightness to the room. Colour distribution In Scotopic vision the room appears to be in black and white. It gives dark and dull look. Emotional understanding ‘The overall impression is that the room appears to be dark. We used to see the obstacles on the left clearly due to the light intensity provided from right side. Since it is dark it gives the feeling of sadness. By providing white lights the space can be more interesting and giv life to the room.
