TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD BY HARPER LEE

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout’s father, Atticus, is using ethos so blatantly, he might as well say,

“Hey, jurors, find your ethics and make the right decision.” He’s calling each juror out on the

carpet, reminding them that no one man is better than any other man in the courtroom or in society

as a whole. This is an ethical ideal that Atticus preached and demonstrated in both his personal and

private life.
"I’m no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our courts and in the jury system—that is no

ideal to me, it is a living, working reality. Gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you

sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the

men who make it up. I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence

you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God,

do your duty."
PATHOS
The Emotional Appeal

It was coined in the 16th century to indicate a quality that

evokes strong emotions, frequently as a result of a real-life

LOGOS
The Appeal to Logic

It is an argument that appeals to a person's sense of logic or

reason.
According to Aristotle, Logos is the "proof, or apparent proof,

LOGOS
The Appeal to Logic

Types of Logos:
Deductive reasoning - where you reach a logical conclusion from a few statements;
for example, if A=B, and B=C then A=C.
Inductive reasoning - where you make generalized logical conclusions based on
what you know or observed to be true; for example, drawing a conclusion that

REFLECTION
We defined and explained what logos, pathos, and ethos are, as well

as why authors might utilize them. Using a mix of logical, emotional,

and ethical appeals can sometimes result in a sound, balanced,

and convincing argument. However, it's crucial to remember
that rhetorical appeals don't necessarily result in a sound,
balanced argument. Any of the appeals could, in fact, be
abused or overdone. Arguments can be weakened as
a result of this.
