English Education Study Program
 Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is a
method used to teach English by focusing on
meaning (what language is used for, not how
language is formed).

 Teachers need to identify what kind of specific

language functions e.g. inviting and reqesting;
and of specific notions e.g. frequency and
location are to introduce or to teach.

 Two versions of CLT: 1) weak version, i.e. learning to
use English; and 2) strong version, i.e. using English
to learn.
 Truely communicative activities in CLT have three
features in the teaching-learning process: 1)
information gap (an exchange of different
information, I know you don’t know); 2) choice
(enabling creative construction of language use); &
3) feedback (response from others).

 Types of activities in CLT: 1) Pre-
communicative activities, i.e. introducing
specific language form; and 2) Communicative
activities, i.e. allowing students to interact
functionally and socially.
 Communicative activities in Communicative
Continuum are chracterisized with: - a desire to
communicate, - a communicative purpose, -
content, not form, - variety of language, - no
teacher intervention, & - no materials control.
