TRUTH
The vigilance of many
Filipinos for honesty in
local and national
elections, even despite
threats of violence, is a
shining example of our
desire for truth. 7
The Filipino value of
being true to one’s
word (palabra de
honor) exemplifies
how much we value
honesty and personal
integrity.

Catechism for the
Filipino Catholics 1218
1. We uphold the truth
when our thoughts
correspond to the
reality we experience
and are not in error.
10
Our pursuit of truth in
various disciplines, such as
mathematics, science,
psychology, history,
philosophy, the arts, and
theology allows us to
understand not only our
world but also ourselves.
11
By studying well and
knowing more about our
experiences, we gain a
better grasp of reality and
are empowered to solve
everyday problems and
difficulties.
12
Education is a
way of valuing
truth.

2. We uphold truth in our
words when we express
in all honesty what we
think and do not lie.
14
Honesty is an expression of
our basic respect for the
dignity of all persons.

3.We value the truth in our
actions when what we do
corresponds to our
thoughts and words,
when “we are not
hypocrites who say one
thing and do another.” 16
The inner peace we gain
from our acts of personal
integrity and principle
reveals how much we
value truth in our deeds.
The source of truth.
The source of all
knowledge and
wisdom, of
truthfulness and
honesty, of fortitude
and moral integrity.
We are called to always live
in the truth – in our thoughts,
our words, and our actions.
The eighth
commandment
upholds the value of
truth by positively
commanding us to
respect the good
name of others.
The truth and “speaking the truth,” after
all, are not a private matter but are
always in the context of our relationship
with others and with God.
God reminds His People that the very life
of freedom of the accused person
depends so much on the truthfulness of
persons summoned to testify in a court of
law.
To proclaim the truth,
then, is a direct act of
respect for human
dignity and for the
sovereignty of the one
true God.
By commanding us not to
bear false witness against
our neighbor, God, who
desires only our good,
reminds us of our human
obligation to stand against
all perversions of truth that
can threaten the very
foundation of a just and
loving community (CFC
1222).
We uphold the truth when our thoughts
correspond to the reality we
experience and are not in error. By
studying well and knowing more
about our experiences, we gain a
better grasp of reality and are
empowered to solve everyday
problems and difficulties.
