Summary of the Article

The article is all about Cognitive Therapy developed by Aaron Beck which is

an approach for the treatment of mental disorders that focuses on thoughts or

cognitions as well as on feelings. It was mentioned how his greatest contribution to

the cognitive model of emotional disorders influenced the entire generation of

researchers and clinicians since it has been acknowledged (Weinrach, 1988).

Weinrach (1988) discusses the therapeutic model by reflecting and evaluating

its applications to the clinical context. He also described is a short-term treatment

primarily for depression, anxiety and other types of problems related to the

psychological aspect of a person. He included how does cognitive therapy work with

the patient, what types of problems does this model work best including the role does

psychopharmacology plays in the treatment of depression in relation to cognitive

therapy and how to use this with a psychotic patient. The author also included the

significance of this approach in other settings such as schools, agencies, industry,

prisons in for the private practitioner as well as issues in terms of culture, class, race,

sex and religion of the client does the cognitive therapy work best.

The important concepts that I have learned in the article are all about the

cognitive therapist and when dealing with maladaptive behaviors of a patient, I

believed that this approach is very useful. This concept has different formulations and

techniques on specific problems which matter on changing the patient's behavior.

Based on the additional evidence-based references that I’ve read about Cognitive

Behavioral Therapy (Lichtenthal, 2011), this could help to focus on the behavior of

the patient rather than on past experiences in order to be oriented toward problem-

solving. When caring for a client who has a maladaptive disorder, it helps them to
confront and modify the irrational thoughts and beliefs that are most likely at the root

of their maladaptive behaviors. Another evidence-based (Gatchel & Rollings, 2012)

emphasized that maladaptive behaviors are those that impede a person from adjusting

to normal surroundings in a healthy way and are either counterproductive or socially

unacceptable. This approach works by detecting maladaptive behaviors, recognizing

ideas connected with those behaviors, correcting any inappropriate beliefs, and

replacing them with more acceptable beliefs that lead to improved coping abilities and

adaptive behaviors.

It was mentioned that cognitive therapy has different formulations and

techniques the reason why I want to ask what are those specific techniques for

specific problems. In relation to issues like gender, race, etc., I would also like to ask

whether the use of this therapy for the child differs for those who are adults or other

developmental stages.
