Introduction

Wachemo University is public higher education institution established in 2012 in Hossaena town
located in South Nation’s Nationalities and Peoples Region at 232kms south of Addis Ababa, is
capital city of Ethiopia. It has six colleges and one school including College of Medicine and
Health Science. In 2016, the university is amalgamated with the nearby hospital called Nigist
Eleni Mohammed Memorial Hospital (NEMM) which is located 3.5km away with aim of
expansion of the services and utilizing it as a training institution for medicine and other health
sciences. This hospital was established in 1984 in order to serve the catchment population about
2.5 million in the zone and nearby zones and districts. The name of the hospital was repeatedly
changed because of various political and social reasons. Initially it was known as “Guad
Mengistu Hailemariam hospital” during “Derg Regime” which was the name of the former
president of Ethiopia. However, this name was not stayed for prolonged years due to the down
fall of the Derge regime in 1991. Therefore, Mengistu Hailemariam Hospital Changed to
Kambata and Hadiya province Hospital. Due to another reason at that time, again the second
name of the Hospital changed for the second time to Hossaena Hospital. Finally, in 2008 the
Hospital got its current name (Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Hospital) under Hadiya zone
administration after momentous discussion and debate of stake holders and concerned bodies.
2.2 Introduction (to the project or tasks)
The object of this research is to lower the total cost of ownership and increase network
performance for Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Comprehensive Specialized
hospital by deploying a dual MAN (metro area network) and using a cost efficient network
management Simple Network Management Protocol (SnMP) tool to monitor and manage the
dual circuits. The current network design of Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial
Comprehensive Specialized hospital is not fully redundant connection and not optimized. The plan
of the dual circuits are more improved total cost of ownership by getting rid of clustered
expensive T1 lines to different departments of the hospital, and moving them over to the new
Dual-MAN faster network. The Dual-MAN is two fast Ethernet Optical Connections from two
service providers that will provide full fault tolerant network connection for increased high
availability.
2.3 Need for the project or tasks
The objective of research in hospital network engineering is to acquire knowledge and understanding to
improve the current network shortcomings that impede the current overall operations of hospital
networks. Examples of these problems include, network redundancy, the absence of network
performance monitoring tools within the market, lack network of availability, and network latency or
congestion.

2.4 Issues in implementing projects or Tasks

Large hospitals such as Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial Comprehensive
Specialized hospital face a varying degree of problems that impede the quality of healthcare to
patients and overall business operations of the hospital and healthcare facilities. Due to the fact
that there is an overwhelming amount of varying data and problematic occurrences, this can A
MODERN LOOK INTO A HOSPITAL’S NETWORK 3 consume large amounts of time and
resources for administrators to detect and isolate problems within a large clustered network. As a
result, hospitals and healthcare facilities will experience delays in overall performance in
mission-critical environments such as emergency rooms, operating rooms, and intensive care
units. Administrative performance and functionality will also be negatively affected as more time
will be needed to research, implement, and deploy a solution to resolve these issues.
Administrative costs will also drastically increase as problematic events occur on a consistent
basis. Ultimately, rather than allocating private and government funding toward increased quality
of patient care, hospitals are directing this much needed funding to their IT and administrative
departments to resolve these problematic occurrences. Additionally, the time and resources of
hospital staff are drastically consumed by these network problems.

2.5 Solution Approach

 The annual budget allocation must be based on planned activities.
 Support file management and documentation by automating file management system and
using properly trained workers.
 Developing guideline on how to use the allocated resource in a wise manner.
 Fulfill supporting materials in the organization
 Mechanisms should be devised to audit the implementation of the planned activities.
 Institutional transformation directorate should devise means to monitor the
implementation of 1to5 development army.
 The college should be negotiate with power and electric authority to get direct line to
reduce frequent power interruption and buy additional generators in where there can be
general power interruption.
2.6 Direction of Research at the host organization
It is an amazing direction at the host organization by many criteria:-
 We have get respects and good acceptance by the staff member.
 We have got favorite situations.
 We have freedom moment and interaction with any professional

2.7 Project or Tasks Overview

2.7.1 Part-I: Requirement of the Project or Tasks
NETWORK REQUIREMENTS
In Health care Network topology, we have desktop Computer, laptops,
smart phone. There is a data flow between the devices within the system.
We have divided our network into segments like for Hospital wards,
clinical area etc. Our network requirements include network devices like
routers, switches, and server.

HOSPITAL SEGMENTS
1 General ward
2 Private ward
3 Clinical Area
4 IT Department
5 Entrance Reception
FEATURES AND SERVICES
• DHCP
• DNS
• Subnetting
• HTTPS
• SSH
• SMTP

2.7.2 Part-II: Analysis, design and implementation of the Tasks

3.1 Project Background and Scope
The project will cover only on Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed Memorial
Comprehensive Specialized hospital to Reduce wastage of time and cost.
We were working on networking part in the hospital. Wachemo University Nigist Eleni Mohammed
Memorial Comprehensive Specialized hospital faces a varying degree of problematic hot spots that
impede the quality of healthcare to patients and overall business operations of the hospital and
healthcare facilities.

3.2 Requirement of the project or Tasks

LAN Network installation
General Networking tools and their functions that we practiced in the internship are listed below.
 UTP cable,
 Wall outlet
 RJ-45 connector,
 Switch,
 Crimper.
 HUB
 Patch panel
 DSL
 Cutter
 Meter
2.3.1. UTP Cable

There are two standards of UTP cable connections. These are: -

Straight-through and cross over connection. Both end of cable use RJ-45 connector.
A. Straight -Through connect: We use straight-through cable to connect different type of
devices. Example:
 Switch to router,
 Switch to pc, and
 Switch to server etc.
When we see this cable both side (side and side) of cable have wire arrangement with the
same color in my field practice we use these type of cable.
