The White Man’s Burden by Rudyard Kipling

Directions: Please read along and answer the questions regarding the above poem.

1. In the first verse of the poem above, Kipling refers to “new caught, sullen peoples, half-devil, and half-child”. Which
group of people do you think he is referring to and how does he feel about these peoples morality or souls?- He is about
the Natives and Africans that they have captured. He feels that they are very different, in a negative/bad way, from the
rest of the European population.

2. In your own words explain what Kipling’s “white man’s burden” was?- Kipling’s “white man’s burden” was technically
just expressing that the duty/job of a white man was to teach/ bring education AND salvation to people around the
whole world. Which was a “hard job” in which is why it’s called a “white man’s burden.”

3. Why does Kipling suggest it is important for the “white man” to take up this “burden”?- Kipling suggested that it was
important for “white man” to take up this “burden” because it weighs heavily upon European nations.

4. How does Kipling describe the work that will be put into this “burden”? Use phrases and words from the poem itself.-

5. Overall, what is the message of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The White Man’s Burden” that was published in McClure
Magazine?- The overall message of Rudyard Kipling’s poem is that the Americans (white men) should take over the
natives and rule with the same energy, honor that he believed, characterized British rule over the nonwhite populations

Directions: Please analyze the above Pear’s Soap advertisements and answer the questions below. Keep in mind that
these are real advertisements that would have been seen in magazines all over the world and are real.

1. List the major symbols that you see within the advertisements above.- Cleanliness. Soap is being used in both
advertisements. A white person is giving the natives the soap and it’s not the other way around.

2. What is the message or meaning of the symbols you listed in the above advertisements?- The meaning of the
symbols that I listed above advertisements was to show that natives technically weren’t clean in the “white
men’s”/ Americans eyes. Since they had to educate them and civilize them. Cleansing them.

3. What is the overall message of the advertisements above?- The overall message that the two advertisements
give off is that the “white men” try to “wash” away from the native culture or ways and turn them into a sort of a

way to bring them. Since the “white man’s burden” was to educate the natives it was life washing their native
ways away or just cleansing them into the white man’s education.

4. After reading Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The White Man’s Burden” and analyzing the Pear’s soap ads how do you
think the general population at this time felt about imperialism around the world?- I feel like after looking at the
poem and advertisements the population at that time felt fine because it was more normal and convenient for
them. Imperliasam was really to rule over people and countries which was the whole point for the “cleanliness”
and education to the natives.
