The Philippines has been tied to poverty since Ferdinand E. Marcos’ administration.

Martial Law brought


economic problems and social conflicts which led to the country’s economic downfall. Six
administrations followed and poverty still remains to be one of the main socio-economic issues in the
country today. Even with the global improvement of the economic situation, the Philippines still gets left
behind; and this could be the reason behind chronic poverty in the country. (Encyclopedia of the
Nations, n.d.)

Chronic poverty is poverty experienced for a long period of time and is usually passed on from one
generation to another. (Chronic Poverty Research Centre, n.d.) Being chronically poor, they are deprived
of their basic needs and would depend on other people. Those living in chronic poverty are usually
found in the slums or streets, a location example would be Baclaran.…show more content…

Poverty is damaging to a child’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development; this makes
them more vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, violence, discrimination, and stigmatization. (Unicef, n.d.)
Child poverty is evident in Baclaran; street children begging for alms can be seen from left and right.
When the child’s living condition does not improve as he grows older, it is likely that the poverty he is
experiencing would be passed on to another generation. T
